Answer:
No. you don't have to have an original remote. there is a code sheet that will reference a number. there is a section on the motor to set the code and you are done.

Answer:
Hi Coloradobj - You may need an original remote to program this universal remote depending on the brand of the garage door opener. This remote is compatible to garage door openers manufactured after 1993 and utilize safety sensors. The only time an original remote is required is if you have a Genie Intellicode 2 or an Overhead Door Code Dodger 2 garage door opener.

Answer:
No, you won't need the old unit. There should be a button somewhere on your opener that allows the opener and remote to learn how to communicate with each other. (One caveat - - older openers may not have this button. Suggest you check before buying a remote.)

On the sensors make sure they are pointing to each other there will be a led on each of the sensors make sure they are lit and bright if not adjust sensor until it is. If the sensors are the problem when you go to shut the door with the remote or the wall switch the door will start down, stop, and go back up. The light bulb on the ceiling mounted unit will flash or you will hear a series of clicks. If this happends you can still close the door by pushing and holding the wall switch buttons until door is completely closed. The door opener should have a force adjustment on the electronics of unit there will be an up force adjustment and a down force adjustment turning these adjustments cloclwise (or follow the arrow) will increase the amount of upward or downward force but dont over adjust or someone can get hurt use this adjustment if the unit stops while going up or revarse itself if going down make small adjustments and test operation. Be aware while testing operation the unit can overheat and will go into auto shutdown until it cools of then it should work again, Read Less

If your unit starts then stops and revarse itself as well as flashing the lightbulb on your unit your safety sensors need to be aligned or repaired. On the safety sensors there should be led lights usually one will be green and one red, different manufactures will use different colors they all serv the same purpose. Both lights need to be lit and bright, one sensor sends a beam to the other and if the sensor lenses arent aligned and the led's brightly lit the door wont close. The only way you would be able to close the door using the opener is to push and hold the open/ close button on the wall in the garage. Before you start always make sure your garage door opens and closes easy manualy if not your door opener wont operate properly and the door will have to be repaired first. Read Less

Because the door opens tells me that its programmed properly. The sensors are designed to prevent the door from closing on pets or kids. Mine got cobwebs on it one time blocking the sensor, preventing closing. Another time I bumped it, bending one of the sensors, making them not look at each other. Last possibility is to check the 2 wires connecting them to make sure 1 has not come loose.

Answer:
I'm glad that Home Depot is publishing the instructions for you, it just takes patience to follow all of the steps, when you get to the end you may have to push the button as many at 20-30times on some of these older openers, but the clicker will definitely work as long as you follow all of the programming instructions. Pick a day off when you have plenty of time to fool with it.

There should be dip switches in your new remote. If you still have the old remote, Change the dip switches in the new remote to match the old. Should work for you. About the Allister opener if they are still in bussiness you should be able to download an instruction manual from that company. I just looked up Allister online. There are quite a few websites that have the manuals for free.
