It is not recommended to use a three-prong converter. If your local code requires the opener to be wired directly, there are instructions in the manual on how to do this. In either case, for safety purposes, the unit MUST be properly grounded. Good luck with your installation. This is a very nice model of garage door opener at a reasonable price. Read Less

Answer:
Yes you sure can. The only problem if your opener has any vibration it will make the bulb burn out faster. I recommend using some high impact bulbs that you can buy at Auto Parts store.

You can use them if they will fit. Some of the older CFI models were longer than standard bulbs and wouldn't always fit in the same places. The newer CFI bulbs are shorter.

That said, there were conflicting instructions (I believe they were on a hang-tag attached to the cord, but now I can't find it) which said that CFL's could be used. This sounded sensible to me, since they are cooler. I decided to try it, since I like to save energy, too. However, I was disappointed to find that the bulb's "neck" was too short to fully screw into the socket, so I had to use standard incandescent bulbs. Oh well... Perhaps that will be a future improvement in an already wonderful product! Read Less

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 201 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by great but adjust with caution I'm handyman challenged so got as far as having it work going up. Proceeded to increase the torque to "help" it go down and ripped the bracing off my door! I'm going to accept that the door got jammed and my prowess with the finer details wasn't where it should be. A quick visit from a local garage door repair place to repair the door and finish off what I started and it works like a dream. It is a great opener - moves my double wide quietly and efficiently. it has 2 x remotes a wireless keypad and lighting- great machine just read and understand the instructions properly understand them July 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value This was the first time installing a garage door opener for me; I have a second opener for my 2 car garage that was professionally installed, but decided to DIY this time. I also ordered the extension for an 8' door. I went along slowly over a weekend and the installation went nicely. The printed instructions could have been a bit better; I'm glad I had my other opener to refer to. I've been using the opener now for a few weeks and I am very satisfied so far with its quality. The new opener works as well as my other professionally installed one; in fact it runs a quieter. The 2 remotes and wireless keypad came with batteries installed and were pre-programmed to operate the unit. Overall, I'm very pleased with this product. March 26, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Chamberlain Premium 1/2 HP Chain Drive Garage Door Opener... This was my first complete install by myself! Instructions were to read and easy to understand. Parts and constructions seem to be well-built while being easy on the pocketbook!!! This model comes with (2) garage remotes & a wireless keyless-entry pin pad which is a nice touch to the total package! As most modern garage door openers, this also has an eye-sensor for added safety. TIPS: 1. Be sure to have (2)- 100W incandescent light bulbs (NOT included in the box!!!) 2. Leave slack in the line near the sensors by curling it around your finger (think of a pig's tail). So if it were cut or damaged it's easier to splice! 3. Use twine, staples, & old racquetballs to make distance markers to help with parking. My Uncle Rick taught me this one! :D January 4, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I like it This device replaces a 22 year old BlueMax. So far so good. Smooth, quiet operation. Really like the wireless keypad for when I want to take the dog for a walk or take a bike ride. No more bulky remote to carry around or keys to lose. Just push the close button on your way out, and simply punch in your code when you get back to open the door again. The only issue for me is, not being able to turn off the lights until the door is completely closed. I'm a bit impatient. July 17, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Relatively straight forward and easy to install. Quality was decent and the performance was good. The unit is much quieter than the one replaced. The indoor push button was very cheap and I haven't installed it yet, preferring to use the old one. The included outdoor keypad was nearly destroyed trying to get the battery cover off for installation. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent another pronto. March 5, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice opener. Decent price. Bought this unit to replace an old "LiftMaster". I believe Chamberlain makes them. This one bolted right in with no modifications needed. Used all existing hardware, so I have some spare parts if needed in the future. The only other thing I had to replace was the wall-mounted wired control unit, as my existing control wouldn't operate the new unit. That was a matter of two screws out and back in after swapping wires around. Total time from unboxing to testing all controllers was about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The motor is less noisy than expected (this is a chain driven unit, so it's not quiet) was very easy to set up/down limits (taking about 1.5 - 2 minutes). The wireless outdoor keypad is very easy to mount and setup as well (taking about 5 minutes). Overall this was a very easy and quick project and I am happy with the purchase. Keep in mind that it was so quick for me because of the fact that I could use all of my existing hardware. 5 stars here May 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Premium 1/2 hp chain drive opener I purchased this item to replace a unit that had worn out and parts weren't available. Installation was very easy, completed in just under 90 mins. Having used the opener a month now, it is so much quieter than what it replaced but opens and closes the door a lot faster. I didn't need to replace the unit for our other garage door but was impressed with this Chamberlin so I purchased a 2nd opener now instead of waiting for the original unit to quit. I should add, with this unit I can open the door over 1000 feet away instead of only 30-35 feet with the other units . The rolling codes provides security we didn't have with the other unit also. February 7, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality at a good price I bought this opener to replace an older 1/3 h.p. opener. It works flawlessly. It is much less noisy than the old opener, and the extras it has (compared to the old unit) just make it that much better. It was very simple to install, and took only about four hours. Although it would have been easier if I had had someone to help me, I was able to do it by myself. I especially like the outside keypad and the fact that if the door is open, walking into the garage will turn on the lights if they have turned off. Also, being able to control the lights on the opener with the wall switch is a great plus. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend this product. September 22, 2012
