Like so much of life the answer is depends. (on assemblers ability)
I was stuck and needed help. Once the Calvary arrived it was a matter of rectifying my mistakes and following the instructions. (that were somewhat obtuse to me.)

I did it myself (65 yr. old female) with only a screwdriver. I won't say that it didn't have a couple of challenges, but the instructions were pretty clear and the pictures helped! I spent about 1-2 hours on assembly.

It's not a panel, more like a bar. The tank sits up off the ground "balanced" on the bar under the grill, but has a clamp that holds the tank in place. Answer:
No, it has a grease cup tp capture the grease. We BBQ'd some chicken legs and thighs, and the grease cup captured about 3/4 inch of grease and I was able to throw it away rather than all that grease being absorbed into the rocks. I placed some foil in the bottom to direct the grease into the cup, so that did help.

This grill is not designed to support lava rocks. However, wood chips would be safe to use and could add an extra smoky flavor.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 97 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good outdoor grill ~ perfect for smaller deck or patio area. This is the 2nd Char-Broil grill I have owned and am again pleased with its sturdy construction, ease of assembly, and excellent value for cost. This model has an added feature ~ a side burner which I've never had on a grill before. I was able to assemble the grill myself in about an hour. It came well packaged with well written instructions and all parts included. I appreciated the free shipping offered by Home Depot on this grill. That was a good selling point for me. All in all I will recommend this grill for anyone who wants a reliable grill and only has limited space and budget. May 15, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It's just as we excepted We bought this for our daughter who has an apt patio - so it was perfect! Assembly was fun ... Just followed the instructions and it was completed- it took about 45 mins. January 5, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job and won't break your pocketbook Bought this grill for it's simplicity and price. I have to say that some of the parts to put it together are pretty darn cheaply made. One of the wingnuts broke while I tightened it, and I'm no weight lifter. It was packaged very well and nothing came damaged. The instructions were easy to follow. The grill is not too big, but can still grill for a comfy-sized gathering. It is clean and simple. Yes, it's cheaply made but we don't bbq enough to shell out hundreds of dollars, just want something that does the job and is easy to keep clean. This grill fits our needs very well. I am pleased with my purchase and hope the grill lasts a long time. May 8, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lightweight but very good value Goes together easily, took a few hours leisurely. A couple of puzzling steps but otherwise very clear. The final product is quite lightweight. It flexes quite a bit. There is no bottom shelf for the gas tank--it rests perched on a bar underneath and is secured with a heavy wire on top. My old, ten-year-old, barbecue was so solid and heavy duty--for the same price. Time have sure changed. Make sure you orient the tank just right in order to get gas flow. After all is said and done, it works well, does what it is supposed to, for a very economical price. With the lightweight construction I recommend a protective cover very strongly. February 17, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good grill for a good price This was reasonably priced. About one benjamin and it was worth it. The instructions weren't the best but not difficult. I'd recommend the grill to others because of the price and quality you get with it. I've used it every day for about a month now and it hasn't had any hiccups. The burners could be a little hotter I think as it seems like it takes an extra minute to get things to be really hot compared to my friends grill of the same brand just two years older. Also, when it's windy the flames blow around or burn out so it took longer to cook that one day. I like this grill and I looked at others, plus the shipping was less than free and arrived within 5 days. July 2, 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty good for the money. Purchased this grill because we did not want to put a lot of money into one at this time (waiting for the infrareds to come down in price). Quality is fair, but for the money, it is pretty good value. Went together OK. Box appeared to have been opened in past and was missing a part (regulator). Probably a return that someone decided to keep the part. One call to Char-Broil and they had the part on its way to me. I experienced very good customer service from the person I talked with. Again, a fair grill but OK for price and for what I wanted it for. August 28, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by all seasons grilling I used this all fall, winter, and spring. It is easy to use and easy to clean. Even cooking for fish and all meats. Better than my previous two grills. Heavy winds do not blow out the burners as happened with previous grills. June 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product but not easy to assemble The grill works wonderful and I have not had a single problem with the operation of it. It was, however, quite a bit harder to assemble than I had anticipated. The diagrams furnished in the installation instructions were not very clear and the parts were not clearly identified. The parts listing page in the front of the booklet just gave the part a number and no name, but the instructions talked to parts by name and not number. Some were hard to identify. It would help if the number was indicated along with the name in the instructions. July 17, 2012
