Does Char-Broil American Gourmet 700 Series Charcoal Grill with Offset Firebox inspect and test its products before shipping to consumers? Why so many flaws with respect to welding, heat escape flimsy material, paint etc?

Answer:
I think QC is limited to making sure that the Char-Broil sticker adhesive placed on the top of the grill is of a significant chemical composition that it is impossible to remove without fire and a grinder.
The sticker is extremely high quality, everything else not so much.

Quality control seemed good to me but a few defects in the r&d dept such as the paint burning off. The gaps I had where smoker box meets main grill will happen due to heat so not really a problem there. All welding on my unit seems in good shape. I didn't find the material flimsy necessarily. Its no cast iron for sure but id say its adequate.

My 700 series was shipped without blemish. Following the directions regarding applying a coat of cooking oil on the entire cooking area and burning it off with a long slow burn is the key. After 11 hours of smoking meat my 700 still looks like it did when it arrived.

I believe the inspection process is good, as respect to heat loss it was minemal. Some of the welds were a little sloppy. Otherwise the only thing I could gripe about was the packaging to prevent damage and the mickey mouse temp guage. All in all a good buy for the money!

Hi DaGr8One,
I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site.
Yes, you can cook with charcoal in the main chamber as well as in the side box.
There are enough cooking grates to allow you to cook directly over fire in both chambers simultaneously.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cooks good if you understand it Had it 6 years works so well I've burnt the bottom out of it

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK, but not great. On the first use, I started a chimney of lump hardwood charcoal, the paint immediately burned off the bottom of the firebox. (See picture) Yes, I had the grate installed correctly. My guess is the gaps are too wide for this type of charcoal and it fell through. By the end of this use, the grate itself was warped. My plan is to reinforce the grate with better steel and close the gaps. I might even repaint the firebox. As others have noted, there are serious gaps in this unit that lets the smoke out all over the place. The back of the smoker is the biggest issue. My plan is to work on sealing as many of these gaps as I can. Lastly, the temperature gauge does not have degrees. You are left to guess what the temperature of smoke chamber is. This is not a good way to smoke! My plan is to modify the smoker to take a better quality gauge. Once I have all these modifications done, I hope this will be a good entry level smoker.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked great for a year and a half... Was a gift for father's day in 2015 from my wife and 2 sons. It work great for a short while. In all fairness I live in south Texas where it is very humid. I have kept it under my covered porch when not in use but it still didn't last. I would think if you pay a couple hundred dollars for something it should last a lot longer than a year and a half.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok Bought this early summer. Paint came off outside of firebox first use. Really to many open gaps and screw holes for this smoker to work as more expensive ones do. Your better off just buying the grill without box on side. I dont bother with it anymore.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worse grill ever. First time use on Labor day weekend and the attached pictures speak for themselves. Half a bag of kings ford 11.6lb charcoal and a couple of pieces of wood for the smoker and Wa La the paint pealed off and the temperature gauge ship the bed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Listen up everyone We are going into our fifth season with this smoker, and after a thousand hamburgers and hot dogs, hind quarters from deer, roast from moose, and beef, turkeys etc I can tell you it does one heck of a job. sure the paint burns off the fire box, what would one expect with heat confined in such a small area the burnt off paint does not effect the quality of this smoker. don't be misled this thing works great, Oh and don't forget to put some baby backs in this thing and smoke them up are you in for one heck of a meal. don't take my word for it buy the darn thing and enjoy the food and compliments oh ya don't forget the beer. And one more thing use it year round like we do, Anyway enjoy your summer and Happy, Happy.Happy eating

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flavor/$ : THE BEST I have had mine for 17 years, no lie. Bought the grill first and soon graduated to the firebox. Cannot begin to count the number of successful backyard meat & veggie preps: two, sometimes three times a week in the summer. Smoked turkeys around Thanksgiving, hot- or cold-smoked salmon, you name it. Yes, the interior coal tray is FINALLY beginning to rust through, but after 18 years, in our Northwest climate?!? Yes, it leaks smoke -- but just add a stick of wet alder (or cherry, or apple...): such a sweet smell, and plenty of heat. Would I try commercial cooking with the unit? No, it requires attention -- but who cares? That's part of backyard bbq for me. I will be in the market for another, soon.
