I gave this unit an overall rating of five stars, because with minimal modifications it is a very useful smoker. Out of the box it is a great grill, but the quality of the smoker design is poor at best. The unit is difficult to maintain temperature, and it leaks smoke from everywhere. Additionally, the cheap steel bends with heat.
With that said, if you seal the unit with high temperature silicone (food safe RTV) and some sort of high temperature rope, you can resolve the smoke leaks. To resolve the uneven temperatures across the unit I cut a disposable deep pan in half to use as a heat deflector, and then I used disposable cookie sheets to direct the smoke throughout the unit. The last modification I made was to lower the chimney using a three inch dryer vent.
The end result is a unit that is a great grill, and the best value smoker you can get for the money. If you are looking for a smoker instead of a grill, you should get an upright or an electric upright. Their temperature is easier to maintain, and they are easier to smoke on. However, if you want a grill and a smoker, this one is great with a few modifications.

I bought this grill to replace the one I use to have that was just about like it. This is a great product and I highly recommend it. The only thing I don't like about this grill is its thermometer. It only has words. No numbered degrees scale. I added my own thermometer that I bought at Home Depot.

when this product got to my house i was super excited, i have been in the market for a grill of this type for a while and while i am fully aware that this grill is on the lower end of the quality price spectrum i did not expect the problems that i got with it. first off, it arrived damaged, i did not make a big deal out of this because the damage was aesthetic and did not reduce functionality, so i ignored it and continued. second, the heat in the smoker burned the paint off the outside of the smoker fire chamber the second time it was used. third, during the same use the heat also popped the weld on the lid to the smoker chamber. i am very disappointed in this grill and am contacting char-broil about it. the welds were pathetic and could have been done better by my 7 year old son and the fire i had in the chamber was well within what should have been acceptable limits. i must sadly not recommend this grill

the bad: the wheels could be a bit more sturdy, and you might need to drill a small hole in the bottom of smoker for washing out, the good: i think it is great for the backyard. am i gonna take it to a bbq contest? no. can i feed the family and friends on the weekend? yes. i smoke shoulders, hams, and turkey breasts. yes smoke comes out in places, but it has to come out somewhere. not enough to hinder the flavor of your smoked meat. the large cooking surface is great for grilling a lot of meat, and the large warming rack is great for keeping a lot of stuff warm while grilling. i cant speak to the people that think this is a useless grill. i dont need my charcoals to be level when cooking. who cares if the charcoal grate warps a little. as far as the smoke leaking out in places, i just tell the kids its the meat factory at work. they like to watch it. and my friends dont care, they just want to eat. no one notices it. who sits and stares at the grill anyway. for backyard grillers who love the art of grilling on a budget. get one. it works just fine.

I will never go back to Gas Grilling. This is one of the best BBQers I have owned. Thank You Home Depot.

This grill is for our remote control airplane club. The chief really loves the large cooking area. It is almost twice the size of our old one. We fed over 100 people at our last event.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by No Choice Very Disappointed
I bought this product in February 2014 in preparation for our annual Texas Independence Day Party. It was a replacement for an old worn out New Braunfels Smoker with MANY years of faithful service. This smoker was the only decent choice at the Navy Exchange. There is practically nothing on the local Italian market as they do not understand proper BBQ. It is February 2015 as I write this and look for replacement parts. The metal is way to thin. The firebox is burnt through in places and the damper and fire box door have decayed to unusable. The lids never did seal properly but it was functional. Had to drill a hole for a proper thermometer as well. Unfortunately it only lasted a single season even when kept covered in the off season. Very disappointed.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Derby71 A good buy for the price...
I haven't had a chance to cook with it yet, so this is just an introductory evaluation. That said, it took me about an hour to unbox and assemble the grill. Fairly straight forward instructions with no major issues. You should definitely get another pair of hands to help out when attaching the firebox to the main body of the unit! Once together, the metal seems a bit thin to me, but for the price, I can't complain too loudly. I did notice that the gap between the firebox and the main body is quite big. Same goes for the access door on the firebox. Seems like both could use a gasket to keep the smoke in. As I said above, I've not used it yet, so I don't know if this will be an issue.
One thing that I had a problem with was the protective wrapping on the coal grates (not the cooking grates). I don’t know if it is some sort of industrial preserving lube/oil or what, but I had a heck of a time getting the plastic peeled off of those grates! The gunk is greasy and sticky at the same time. The plastic wrap itself was so flimsy that trying to pull it off just ended up shredding the stuff. VERY annoying and messy! But, with patience and time, it all came off. And if I didn't get it all, whatever is left should burn off when I fire up the grill for its initial “seasoning”.
Overall, I think (and hope) that it’s a good buy. I’ll reserve judgment on that until I’ve actually had smoke/fire in the thing. Weather permitting, I plan on giving the grill its “seasoning” fire this weekend. Then it’s Brisket Time! Wish me luck!!
