Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 65 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Superb Grill for a Great Price!!! This beast weighs as much as a gunsafe, absolutely requires 2 people to assemble per manual instructions - especially when screwing in the 50lb lid to hinges. Cooked twice on it thus far, everything turned out flawless. Extremely heavy duty, great heat distribution, leaves excellent grill lines, maintains heat well, best feature is the cast-iron grates. Don't forget to season pit per instructions and clean/season grates after each cook or they will rust. And buy a good cover so it will last and not rust from outside elements. The only complaint I have is the relatively cheap metal coal rack and locking mechanism to lift/lower the coals. I had to bend the lifting rods appx 5 degrees inward so I can shut the lid promptly at any height. Also, during assembly I had accidently pulled up too fast and the rack dropped into the ash box; that is the last thing you would want to do when cooking, you will get ash all over your fine cuisine. The hooks that cradle the bottom coal rack need to be bent inward too so the rack can't drop out. A+ to Home Depot for delivery, said appx 2 weeks, got it within 4 days. I would recommend this grill to anyone and everyone... Propane is for the birds Hank Hill; cooking on coals separates the men from the Bobby's. May 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by High Quality, versatile bbq pit We owned one of these years ago. After many years of use it had to be retired. We then bought an offset smoker/grill to replace but it never was easy to control temperature, etc. with the offset and we never liked it as well as the old Char-broil. The Char-Broil is very heavy duty & durable. Temperature control is very good. The adjustable charcoal grates can be raised & lowered which is a big help. The set up is a little bit of a hassle but be sure to follow the instructions concerning the seasoning of the cast iron cooking grates and keep the ash tray cleaned after each use: this will help prevent rusting (applies to any pit). This is a grill and NOT a smoker although indirect cooking is easy with this pit. I would recommend this grill. It can put out some great grub! April 3, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Grill, and it is so easy to ajust My father bought one around 1960, not sure of the year but its close. My brother still has it and its just like new. This boy is not cheep junk, although they lightened up the grates from the early model they work. Tried to get the one from my brother but he wouldn't sell it to me, he uses some green junk think. 9000 lbs. So I bought this one from Char-Broil. You need to make some air closer for the bottom air intake, and I have a shop, so make a add on smoker. You won't be sorry. Except for the lighter grates I would give it a 5 star. August 3, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!!!! I bought my Char-Broil eight year ago have made pounds and pounds of jerky, grill hundreds of steaks , brats, beef, lots and lots of pork and once in awhile chickens at tailgate parties, charity events and more every week . my grill is just now showing signs of ware and well it should. LOVE MY GRILL!! August 17, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Quality of assembled parts needs improving This is the 2nd 940 I have purchased, The first in 1984. I made the purchase because my Dad had one in the 60's (he is also on his 2nd) Mine was kept outdoors and had rusted out in too many places after almost 30 years. After looking for another grill for 6 months, I could not find one locally ( Charbroil or other brands) that would replace my old one with the quality I was looking for (no 940's available locally) . My wife went on line and ordered it from Char-Broil for our anniversary. When I received it I couldn't have been happier. It was made of even heavier duty material than my first. So I expect it to last longer than I will. Unfortunately after putting it together I found the lid of the grill did not match up with the firebox. The lid appeared to not be square. After receiving another lid and eventually a replacement grill, I determined this was a manufacturing problem. The grill lid does not seal properly against the firebox and makes it difficult to impossible to control the airflow for low and slow smoking. I was very disappointed that nothing else could be done. I have used the grill for the past 3 years and everything else about the grill is great, All of the material used were much heavier duty than the original one I had from the tray for ashes, wheels, side trays, firebox and lid. Unfortunately, since I use it mostly for smoking I am still working on getting it sealed better. Since it is so heavy duty, I will be living with this problem for a long time until I can feel comfortable with buying a new grill and giving this one away. August 20, 2014
