We owned one of these years ago. After many years of use it had to be retired. We then bought an offset smoker/grill to replace but it never was easy to control temperature, etc. with the offset and we never liked it as well as the old Char-broil. The Char-Broil is very heavy duty & durable. Temperature control is very good. The adjustable charcoal grates can be raised & lowered which is a big help. The set up is a little bit of a hassle but be sure to follow the instructions concerning the seasoning of the cast iron cooking grates and keep the ash tray cleaned after each use: this will help prevent rusting (applies to any pit). This is a grill and NOT a smoker although indirect cooking is easy with this pit. I would recommend this grill. It can put out some great grub!

This beast weighs as much as a gunsafe, absolutely requires 2 people to assemble per manual instructions - especially when screwing in the 50lb lid to hinges. Cooked twice on it thus far, everything turned out flawless. Extremely heavy duty, great heat distribution, leaves excellent grill lines, maintains heat well, best feature is the cast-iron grates. Don't forget to season pit per instructions and clean/season grates after each cook or they will rust. And buy a good cover so it will last and not rust from outside elements. The only complaint I have is the relatively cheap metal coal rack and locking mechanism to lift/lower the coals. I had to bend the lifting rods appx 5 degrees inward so I can shut the lid promptly at any height. Also, during assembly I had accidently pulled up too fast and the rack dropped into the ash box; that is the last thing you would want to do when cooking, you will get ash all over your fine cuisine. The hooks that cradle the bottom coal rack need to be bent inward too so the rack can't drop out. A+ to Home Depot for delivery, said appx 2 weeks, got it within 4 days. I would recommend this grill to anyone and everyone... Propane is for the birds Hank Hill; cooking on coals separates the men from the Bobby's.

I purchased this grill as a Father's Day gift for my husband and he can't stop telling people about his new toy! The grill is made with great material. It is heavy and very stable. The two cutting boards that go on either side of the grill are beautiful. Once they've been rubbed with mineral oil for a week the beautiful grain of the wood is more visible. The cast iron grates are awesome because they give steaks that awesome pattern found in many steak houses. The grill keeps its temperature very well, too! The fact that one can add coal without having to uncover the entire grill is great when slow cooking. I would definitely recommend this grill to a friend.

Everything about this grill is heavy duty and built to last. From the solid rubber wheels to the thick cast grill plates. Very easy to maintain a variety of temperatures from smoking to sear-grilling. Simply an exceptional grill that serves multiple cooking styles.

My father bought one around 1960, not sure of the year but its close. My brother still has it and its just like new. This boy is not cheep junk, although they lightened up the grates from the early model they work. Tried to get the one from my brother but he wouldn't sell it to me, he uses some green junk think. 9000 lbs. So I bought this one from Char-Broil. You need to make some air closer for the bottom air intake, and I have a shop, so make a add on smoker. You won't be sorry. Except for the lighter grates I would give it a 5 star.
