I spoke with a Char Broil QA engineer. He said the wood is a species called Cunninghamia. He said it does look like yellow pine but definitely is not. They source the wood from China, where the grill is manufactured. Based on what he said and what I read, it seems to be a decent piece of wood. So, I stand corrected on my assessment of the wood.

This gentleman I spoke with at CB was great. He patiently addressed every issue I felt the grill had, candidly explained the contraints CB is under in today's manufacturing world, etc. and offered lots of tips and advice for using the grill (he has an earlier model). The gap is part of the design, and is a result of CB addressing a previous issue with the grill.
After our conversation I realized a few things. One, CB customer support is up there with the best of them. That goes a long way with me. Two, there is no better charcoal grill for the money, period. Three, I need to just shut up, appreciate this beast, and keep grilling. Read Less

Answer:
Mine came with cheap yellow pine cutting boards. They look nothing like the photo, are very soft and not considered a good choice for cutting boards. According to an exchange I had with Char Broil CS, the wood can vary but they specify only hardwood. Considering mine shipped directly from their warehouse, I doubt that claim.

The wood is what I'd term as butcher block & is of very high quality. Each plank has a ridge along the edges to catch potential spills.
I'm so impressed with the wood that I'm going to season it with several coats of mineral oil to keep it not only looking nice, but germ-free & mold-free.

Answer:
No, if you have it delivered, you assemble it yourself. You should ask your local store if they offer assembly in store or if you would like to buy a display, those come already assembled (as long as you have a way to take it home assembled).

Answer:
No, the grill requires assembly. The instructions, however, are very easy to understand and the hardware clearly labeled. I assembled the entire grill in about an hour. The only step that I found it necessary to have assistance (my wife helped) was the installation of the lid.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A Great Box I used it as a built in without the cart and it worked out great! September 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Several design flaws; some parts poorly made The cons: End of handle was chipped (char-broil will replace it). Terrible installation experience; nearly impossible to install lid with only 2 people; Char-Broil ought to include rods or large nails that can be slipped through a couple of the screw holes to help keep the lid hinge aligned with the firebox hinge (I used thin screwdrivers); holding the lid for 6-7 min while the screws and nuts are being installed is very difficult for one person, especially if that person is not very tall; the instructions should caution against trying to install the lid restraints AFTER the lid is attached (can't be done; we had to remove all eight screws and start over after installing the restraints). I had to drill out 3 holes on the iron components in order to get the screws through (some consumers won't have the tools to do this kind of thing), and I had to redrill/reem out the hole in one of the two wooden handle spacers. The round-head screws that anchor the side trays to the legs should be replaced with counter-sunk, flat head screws (I will probably use a Forstner bit to create flat-bottom recesses in the undersides of the cutting boards so they will fit better into the side trays). The unit I received has a 1/8" gap at the "roof" of the lid on the right side (allows smoke/heat to escape). The speed-nuts supplied for the pins that hold the logo plate on the lid are impossible to install; we had to purchase better ones. Two of the grates are warped and badly cast (char-broil will replace them), and they were coated with what looked and smelled like cooking grease (supposed to be a protective "wax" coating for shipping; very difficult to wash off with "mild soap" as per the instructions. Instructions p3 mention positioning "butterfly dampers ¼-turn..." The model I purchased does not have butterfly dampers. Door hinges scrape paint off firebox when the door is opened. The fire grate (charcoal tray) easily tips forward or backward, and when that happens, the fire grate hanger slips off the firebox at one side or the other. This could be dangerous. Nothing prevents the hot briquettes from falling off the fire grate at the sides. This significant design flaw will continue to annoy me greatly as I use this grill. Furthermore, the stainless steel bars should have been spaced closer, as small briquettes (small to begin with or small after burning for a few minutes) readily fall through. The pros: Good temperature maintenance. Glad there's no chimney. October 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is our THIRD CharBroil grill in 42 yrs! We have not found a large, charcoal grill superior to the CharBroil. This is our third such grill. The others just wore out. The price is very reasonable for the excellent quality and durability of the product. The new one is the best yet! September 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by love the grill - but I have used this same grill for decades, and I love it. The only problem I have had is with the wheels. Seems like the engineers can come up with a better wheel for this unit. July 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This grill was the best addition to my charbroil family the thickness of the metal holds the heat extremely well, the fire last all day, I honestly don't think I could have made a better purchase. June 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is for me, the ultimate charcoal grill! After researching all available charcoal grills available and price points, I chose the Char Broil CBX 940. It's value for the money has proven to be perfect for me. It's very heavy gauge sheet metal and cast iron components have it weigh in just under 200lbs. After years of gas grilling I went back to charcoal(old school) and delighted with the grill. Cast iron cooking grates, cast access door for adding charcoal or wood and the adjustable coal grate allows perfect positioning of heat close to or farther from the meat. I believe smoking meats will also be quite possible due to its construction. Well worth the money!! December 10, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really Heavy Duty! I had a Char Broil grill for over 20 years that finally rusted out and I could no longer repair it. This one is much heavier built than my last one and I am looking forward to many years of happy char-grilling! April 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding quality! Everything about this grill is heavy duty and built to last. From the solid rubber wheels to the thick cast grill plates. Very easy to maintain a variety of temperatures from smoking to sear-grilling. Simply an exceptional grill that serves multiple cooking styles. June 11, 2013
