Why did the control knobs lose the painted settings in less than a year, and why did the silver "plating" peel after such a short period of time.

I never used any harsh cleaners on the knobs or grill ( the strongest was windex without ammonia). The cover rotted out and I had to replace it. The replacement has now rotted and again needs to be replaced. Can a new hood and knob panel be replaced? Also, inside the lid, the paint is peeling and dangling. No matter how clean I keep my grill, as soon as I remove the cover, there are water marks and rusty colored droplets along the panel that the knobs are located on. This is a patio grill, not close to a pool, and I am very frustrated with the "cosmetic" and actual deterioration of the overall exterior. I will say that I love the way it grills, and would buy another one if I could be guaranteed that the printing on the panel where the control knobs are would remain intact and that a better cover could protect the grill, and the metal plating would not flake off. Please help.

Joli,
We sincerely apologize for the issues you are experiencing with your Red and assure you we are here to help. Please contact us directly at 1-800-241-7548 so that we may look into your particular situation and see what options we have available to best assist you. We are available Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm EST and Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm EST. We want to assure you that we do not paint the insides of any of our grills. The flakes you are seeing is carbon build up from normal day to day use that has accumulated inside the lid and is starting to come off. The best way to remove this is with warm soapy water (use a mild dish detergent) or a grill cleaner and a scrub brush. Once the build up has been removed rinse with water and allow to air dry. Water spots may occurr if your cover is put on while your grill is still too warm. The trapped heat can cause condensation to build up and sit on your grill until it's next use. You will want to make sure that your grill has completely cooled before covering. Here are some other helpful tips for stainless steel care. After each use, let your grill cool and then wipe the grill with a soft, damp, soapy cloth, rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth or towel. This can help prevent water spots from occurring. It is important to remove any food particles, marinades or sauces from the stainless steel surface of your grill. Most marinades are highly acidic and can damage stainless steel. Do not use steel or wire wool on your stainless steel. Always rub or wipe in the direction of the grain or polish lines in the stainless steel surface, not across them. Read Less

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Unsatisfied, except propane works well I purchased my Big Red from HD late summer 2011 with the intent on transferring it to natural gas (NG) in the summer of 2012. I obtained the conversion kit from HD and followed all of the directions, but after hooking up to NG I could only get up to 250 degrees. After numerous calls to Charbroil they finally said “some models switch to NG and some don’t.” Apparently mine doesn’t . . . I’ve switched back to propane and the grill is working just fine & I’ve gone and bought a back-up propane tank. Even though Charbroil and Home Depot advertise that this grill will run on natural gas – well yes it can, but only if you want to slow cook something at less than 250 degrees F! October 22, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not the quality I expected I have a this new model AND also a 10 year version of the Professional. Overall, you can tell this design was made for profits, not durational quality. The older model is very high quality stainless, no the paper thin version found on thsi RED model. (Maybe this is why the picture is so small on the Home Depot site). Stainless is thin as paper and will rust quickly. The heat spreader that covers the burners is a very poor design as this component is NOT made of stainless, thus will rust quickly and is not covered by the warranty. Cooking: it's a great grill for cooking! Summary: It's just too bad this model wasn't designed to last! Quality: BAD Design = GOOD, September 6, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Char-Broil Red Infrared Stainless Gas Grill I have owned this grill for about 3 weeks. It was easy to assemble right out of the box. So far, I have rotisseried a chicken using mesquite chips for smoke and I have cooked bratwurst on it. It was simple to use and the food came out perfectly. The cleanup was easy and quick. I am very happy with the fuel guage (it works by measuring the weight of the gas bottle). I bought a good cover to protect it from the elements. I am a little concerned that some of the plastic parts (e.g., the battery compartment cover) may not survive long. In a year or two, I'll know if it was worth the price! September 26, 2009
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Save your money I've had this grill for just over 1 year and have never been more disappointed. For $1,000 i expect to get many years out of a grill. So far, the chrome has all flaked off, one of the drip trays has rusted out and burned through, and the electronic control doesn't work. The burner controls are worn out so that i have to turn the gas on and off at the tank. Sometimes the off position is at 12:00 and sometimes it's at 3:00...go figure. all of the markings have worn off. Just a cheap Home Depot grill. February 23, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by What a great addition to my deck The grill was shipped basically assembled only about an hour was spent attaching sides, etc (really only need a screwdriver). Has the extra features of tank volume indicator and temperature probe built in that are great. Looks great on the deck. Finally and most importantly the best pork chops I have ever made. The searing ability locked the juices in and gave the sear marks that i could never get with a regular gas grill. I was lucky enough to get this 40% at Home Depot great investment. June 18, 2011
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Big Red big Dudd I bought a big red last year. I have had the electronic controls replaced twice and the burner controls replaced one. You can't clean where there is writing with anything other than water. If you do, all the burner settings will come off. Poor paint on the stainless. The Plastic on the handles started bubbling up after just a few months. The quality for the price is just not there. I do like the way it cooks though and thaqt is the only thing. Not a good investment for the money !! April 4, 2010
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great IR steak grill! This is a GREAT infrared grill. It is wonderful at grilling/searing steaks. The stainless lid and sidestands could be heavier and thicker gauge. The rotisserie is not very useful IMHO. That said I would buy another in a second! I have never grilled a steak better or faster. I was a charcoal guy but not any more. Just put some wood chips through the grills on to the IR surface. Dont get the Char-Broil cover recommended. It is to small! GREAT GRILL! Great Value! July 9, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great for covered patios, not exposed to weather This is my 2nd exact same BBQ, love the way it works, first one did not last long out in the weather (even with a cover, actually believe the cover made it worse) it rusted which says cheap stainless steel. I bought the 2nd one because I did like the way it worked and now I have it under a patio roof, works great, no flame ups ever! July 10, 2014
