Answer:
Yes, it should work on old varnish. Make sure you leave it on long enough to do it's job.

Answer:
Can't say it removes the stain. It did remove the finish top coat. Mine did not have multiple layers, so I am not much help.
I had a more enjoyable experience using this product than sanding.
Experiment with wait times.

I used this to restore a 30's cedar hope chest that 2 layers of paint over the original stain. Citristrip took 2-3 applications in most areas to get down to the wood, and worked on par with other popular products I tried on the piece. Hope this helps!

I like it and on forums, many people like it. Now-a-days I would rather use it than sanding.
Guess it depends on what you are stripping.

Bumblebee here! Since i didn't have patience to wait for an answer i tried product on chalk paint. Yes it does remove chalk paint. It also removed majority of original stain but I didn't mind since I would rather restain and see the character and craftsmanship of the original wood than see paint on a beautiful piece of antique furniture. NO fan here for painted antique furniture!

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 154 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked awesome! I am not a fan of chemical paint strippers. However, this stuff changed my mind! It worked better than I had hoped. I followed the instructions and it worked within an hour. It was hot as Hades outside so I used it in my basement. Little to no odor and what odor there was smelled of oranges. July 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This stuff works Works very well without those nasty fumes. Still need gloves and glasses, but much more pleasant to use than traditional stripper. The gel clings and will soak down to other layers of paint. The instructions say it can be left on up to 24 hours. My experience was that 24 hours was too long. I found the optimum time to be around 2 to 3 hours. I will definitely use this again. September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Orange Citrus Stripper works great! I have used this product several times. It works very well. It does not have a bad odor and cleans up easily with soap and water. April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent for stripping hard wood floors to natural beauty. We didn't have to put another coating down after using this product. Use of plastic scrapper to smoothly pick up built up wax. We found out that spreading this product, on the floor, letting it sit for about 30 minutes, with the plastic scrapper over wood floor works better than a brush or a brush roller! This product ate up my roller and using a brush was a slower process. Follow directions and use chemical gloves from the very beginning because the skin on my hands dried, flaked and start peeling before I use the correct gloves. Even those gloves had to be replaced too while doing my floors. We learned to used Klen Strip After wash (paint stripper with soft cloths) as I went to remove any extra film left behind that the scrapper couldn't pick up. This way, you get a clean shine and less going back to clean up film because there will be some. This After Wash made using this product excellent! I am overall very pleased with this product August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice! citristrip work really well and the odor was not as bad as you would expect with this kind of item. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use, no odor Used this product inside the house to take paint off of my daughter's dresser and it worked impressively well! After about 45 minutes it was very easy to scrape off with a plastic putty knife. Really no strong chemically odor etc. As with any stripper it makes a big mess. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked just as expected, awesome! Followed the instructions and used to remove enamel paint from at Tub. The paint practically fell off and with no fumes. Great product! August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great with no noxious fumes I used it to strip paint and clearcoat off a chair, striped the paint easily. Easy cleanup and smells like oranges. August 16, 2016
