Customer Questions & Answers

Studs are available. How do you use wall clip on a stud backing?

Would like to use studs where available. Can use dry wall when necessary.
Asked by: butch
For installing shelving on concrete or studs you can use our Concrete/Stud Shelf Clips (Model # 7561).

All the shelves using this system collapsed from the top shelf down.

I have a feeling over many years, the plastic may become a little brittle and couldn't hold the weight from the top shelf. It was like a domino effect and created quite a mess to clean up. All the plastic clips snapped below the screw leaving the screw and the remaining plastic in the wall. How do I now fix this? I can try to remove the plastic clip from the wall but the plastic expanded somewhat once inside. Can I just put the same size back in there and try to rehang the shelves?
Asked by: DotP
Most likely, the insertion hole in the drywall will be enlarged after removing the wall clips and should not be used for future installations.

Preloaded Back Wall Clips (48-Pack) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product These clips work great. They work for ClosetMaid AND Rubbermaid shelving products. We've used them for both. We space them about every 10" or so, and adjust to dodge studs. After drilling the hole you can usually push them in by hand with some force and then hammer the nail. If you can't push in by hand just pull the nail out, hammer the clip in against the wall, and then hammer the nail in. Make sure they are all level. Our builder alternated upright and upside down clips which secures the shelf a little better but makes it more difficult to remove. We always put them on the underside so we can pop the shelf out if we feel like it (perhaps if you were to paint later).

I completely removed shelving from a couple of closets before painting them. It had been installed using the clips with screws. I tried to be careful but most of them broke up, I guess because the plastic was so old. These new clips are the same diameter so installing them in existing holes was a snap, easier than with screws. Instructions say to push in with the butt end of a hammer, which was challenging to me - but I found another tool to press the nail end in. The only issue is that they are not quite as long as the old clips, meaning that the shelves sit slightly higher on the back edge now. Not worth patching the old holes and drilling new ones but I wish Closet Maid had maintained the same specs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Replacement Product Our closet clothes racks (installed by professionals) fell down. The top rack took at the bottom rack. This was as we were packing for vacation the next day. We secured the clothing and the night we returned. I was pleased to find exactly what I needed at Home Depot. I received personalized guidance from a staffer. I feel it is now installed the way it should have been originally.
