Can the tower simply be installed without the hanging rods, or do the haning rods need to be installed on each side to support the tower?

The reason I ask is I have an unsual space that is in the need of some shelving, etc. The space is only about 20 inches wide so I was planning on just installing this up to one side of the wall and leaving about 4 inches on the the other side to just slide in my ironing board. Will this work without the hanging rods supporting it?

Yes. The tower is secured to the wall at the back using "L" brackets so it could be used without the rods.

It will work. The shelving unit is in 2 sections and they have provided hardware to attach the tower to the wall with two on the top unit and two for the bottom unit.

Answer:
Sure, there are some brackets that you attach inside the shelving that keep the tower firm to the wall, the rods don't protvide support, just don't use them.

The tower can be installed without the rods. The tower is a two-piece (stacked) unit, which gets its stabiliy from the combined weight on the floor + the included brackets that mount directly to the wall.

Answer:
Yes. They are a heavy gauge metal, and they can be extended to accommodate a longer length, or cut with a small hacksaw if the length needs to be shortened. Each rod is 2 pieces for adjustment (similar to an adjustable curtain rod) so you can adjust it to your desired length; just cut the end WITHOUT the small hole for the wall bracket, if you need to shorten the rod.

The distance from the back wall is up to you. I used my hangers to gauge the distance I wanted. Part of my design for the closet is to have uniformity. All one type of hanger no exceptions. A single look really makes your closet look high end.

As close or as far as you want it to. When you assemble the units you get to decide where you mount the rod hanger on the tower / on the opposing wall. I just divided the closet depth in half and screwed mine in wherever that fell on the tower.

Both. I assmebled my first unit exactly how the directions said to. For the second closet, I switched out adjustablke shelves for the fixed shelves and it worked just fine. I'm not really sure what the big difference is that justifies all the hype.

Answer:
FIXED. The instructions give exact location placement for each shelf for the initial build. Likely for stability reasons. However you could make adjustments to the center shelf and that should not cause any weakness to structural integrity. Also would depend on if you customized the unit with drawers for example in the lower half, that then wouldn't allow for adjustments.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 111 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Solid Interior Closet Organizing/Shelving Unit I ordered this product b/c it was exactly the dimensions I needed. Although the product is well made, there were a number of small cosmetic damages that were on assorted pieces right out of the box. The box was huge and heavy (unit is 82 1/2" H) and it's going inside a closet, so I didn't exchange, but it was a little annoying. Construction was straightforward and pretty simple. Unit felt sturdy once support corners were in place. Although I ordered 2 units, I received bolting hardware for only one. And I wound up going back to Home Depot to have additional shelves made. Wish the unit came with 1-2 addl than it did. Good value for money, and it will 100% work as I hoped it would. March 30, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nice closet organizer but beware of packaging Product was good and went together fairly easy. The problem was in the packaging for shipment. There were gashes in the box which was in it's own carton as on the shelf at the store with no special protection for shipment. The UPS driver had shown me the box and asked if I wanted to send it back since that was the way it came from the shipper. I reviewed the product and noticed sme damage from shipping but accepted it anyway because I didn't want to have to wait for the return and reshipment. I used some wood filler and flat white paint to cover up the damage and it looked fine since it was only going into the closet and would be somewhat hidden. Other than that, the product did give me the necessary storage and organization that I needed and desired. I would suggest picking the product up at the store if you could to avoid the handling damage, but it is heavy and hard to handle. April 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good all in one unit. The 16 inch unit is very good quality. I purchased a 12 inch as well and it is no where near as nicely constructed / engineered as the 16. April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good value, slightly cheap looking Finally caved and got an organizer for my closet, couldn't be happier! Went together fairly easy, but like most DIY furniture it did look pretty cheap. We ended up picking up some small trim and adding to the front edges of the sides and shelves, put on a fresh coat of white paint and the whole unit looks custom now! January 4, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ugh! Watching the video was misleading. Looks much simpler than it really is. The video shows different cam locks than what we were given. We have put together many many things but my wife and I found the directions and the hardware to be a real pain. It took us more than 8 hours to put this together! We would rather put something from Ikea together than another one of these! Hoping it holds up with use. April 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worth the time and looks great! After getting sky-high quotes I decided to do the closet myself. This unit looks terrific. Other reviews are correct-cams and leveling were difficult, but worked out fine with patience. Closetmaid is amazing and customer service really stands behind their product. When I damaged a part they sent me a new one with little hassle. Glad I bought this. March 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy as Pie! Installed these CLOSET MAID custom organizers in all my closets as part of a full renovation of our new townhouse. Quality was good, price was reasonable. Easy to install - all by myself! March 22, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Decent closet system Decent quality for the money, relatively easy to put together (pay attention to the B vs. C shelf sizes!) Wish there was a higher quality product available! April 5, 2016
