Yes, you can overlap the top tracks. I did this in my laundry room. To mask the overlapping horizontal tracks, I made sure that the holes on vertical tracks aligned despite being attached to overlapping horizontal tracks. The alignment of holes on the vertical tracks determined how much vertical space was between the two overlapping tracks (I used nails to temporarily hold the vertical tracks in place while I marked where overlapping tracks would go). I then placed a shelf below the overlapping tracks. When baskets or bins are on the shelf, the overlapping tracks cannot be seen. I have attached pictures of the tracks with and without bins on the shelf. Happy hanging! Read Less

NO, as the tracks would not fit within each other. Yes you could stagger them vertically but that would look awful in my opinion.. I suggest you have the Home Depot sales associate cut the tracks to length you need..

Answer:
Yes they can be cut to fit! I would recommend that you cut it so you have the mounting holes as close to each end this way you can support it evenly balanced. You want to put the screw through the holes in to the top plate 2x4 of the wall this way all the weight on the shelving system will be held up by the structure of the wall, then use the uprights holes to just hold the racks secure to the drywall.

If you have a Dremmel you can do it yourself but they have cutting tools at the store to cut things like this.. you would have to cut it at both ends 4" on each.. that would leave you 3 holes to hang it with and 4" extra on each side..

This is all great, but what is the recommended method of securing the hang track? Screw size, nail what?

I am thinking of securing the hang track at the top of the wall. With a 1 1/2" top plate - 1/2" drywall - 5/8"
distance from the top of the track to the center of the hole only leaves 3/8" of the bottom of the 2 x 4
top plate. I don't want to use nails and want to use screws. What size and length screw and should every hole in the track be used.
I'm also doing it this way because there is a pocket door in this wall.

Answer:
Locate the mounting holes to be in the center of the top 2x4. if you expected load on this is going to be very heavy say around 300lbs then use each hole. Use a #12 by 2" Screw and also I did drywall anchors on the section of rails hanging on this track for extra support. It mainly keeps the uprights plumb an tight to the wall.

I think I understand your problem as the wall you want to hang it on has pocket door which I think means there are no up and down studs to use and you only have an upper 2 x 4 to secure to, not sure if your have enough wood to hold up these tracks unless you are not putting much weight on the unit. You might want to check out some of the new molly set ups they use for hanging mirrors as they may support more weight if needed. Not sure if that helps. And by the way you usually don't need to use every screw hole, they have the holes to as studs are sometimes 16 inch centers and some walls have 24 inch centers again the amount of weight you plan to put on unit comes into play. here are the directions
http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/ca/cafc8d51-5807-4dd6-877e-c91330ce4e9a.pdf
But your concern was what I initially was thinking, that the top 2x4 would be too close to the actual ceiling to properly secure the Track in the center of it.. but it wasn't the case. Use a drill and one of your smallest bits to find the bottom edge of your top 2x4.. it's likely not flush with the ceiling.. when builders frame walls they typically do so before raising it.. in order to raise it and not hit the ceiling, they make it just short of the ceiling height.. I couldn't figure out why our wall had a half inch gap between the top 2x4 and the ceiling until I saw our builder during a remodel put up a wall.. The ceiling isn't what holds up the frame anyhow so they leave a gap which allows for the raising of the wall without the ceiling preventing it... the gap is then covered by the drywall people..
But you mention 5/8" between top of the Track and the center of the hole.. which is true.. which would only leave 3/8" of the bottom of the 2x4... but that only equals an inch.. the 2x4 gives you 1.5" of wood to deal with.. so even if it is at the top touching the ceiling.. the hole would be 5/8" from the top of the wood.. which would leave 7/8" from the bottom to the center of the hole.. plenty of room..
But I almost guarantee your top 2/4 is slightly below the ceiling.. if you test drill to find it, i'm sure that's what you'll notice.. then mark where the center of the 2x4 is and plan to drill your Track there.. it doesn't have to be flush with the ceiling.. better to sit in the center of the actual 2x4 for the most support.
Feel free to ask if you have more help.. if you ask another question it will go to my email and i'll try and help. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Organizing the garage. Love the new shelves. Easy to install and strong! doesn't look cheap. My wife after me to clean and organize the garage. Once completed even I said "yea baby". August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for adjustment of vertical supports With this product the location of studs relative to vertical shelf supports is unimportant. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for utility room shelving I recently used this to install some shelves in our utility room. The pieces are sold individually so you have to plan your parts list. For three 2' long 12" shelves spaced about 13" above one another here's what you need: one 40" top hang rail, two 30" side rails, six 12" brackets, one 72" twelve inch shelf cut twice to give you three shelves at 2' long each, one bag of assembled hardware, and one bag of plastic end caps. All that came to about $60, but the two cuts on the shelf were free at the store! Installation is straight forward and easy with a power drill. July 8, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great system! I love the way that this piece lines up all of the verticle pieces. I also think that the shelves are supported better! December 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by white hang track Easy to put on studs and will then hold a lot of weight compared to other shelf systems. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Universal Header This is great! I like the ability to secure adjustable shelving from the top of the wall on the header beam on the drywall studs framing October 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use, makes quick work of track installation. Hang the track and mount into studs and the rest of the job is easy. A bit tight sliding the verticals when using large headed screws. July 14, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Track hold up shelving system well. Sturdy horizontal track that holds up shelving securely. It, in my opinion, is superior in design to the competition. My entire home is 'standardized' on Closet Maid and I have never had a problem. July 7, 2015
