My wife wants the tracks, hangers and shelves to be the same color as the wall, which is a kind of a light off green. Someone in the paint section of a Home Depot suggested that I could use synthetic steel wool to take the coating off and rough up the surface of the steel to prepare it for painting. He suggested that I use Alkyd Semi-gloss Enamel paint. Assuming that I am willing to do the work and that I would do it with care, could this work?

Answer:
We cannot recommend that you alter the product in such a way because it will void any warranties we offer on the product. Removing the coating could allow moisture to penetrate the metal and rust could accumulate.

Not sure which slot you are asking about, the slot on the top to hang the shelf track or the slot on the track for the bracket that hold the shelf which are standard. They sell the upper part which will hold the track in place and has 16 inch center holes for hitting studs and the track hangs from that. Answer:
Don't know but my shelves are on 16" centers. They hae quite a bit of boxes on them. Be sure to drill 2 1/2" screws into the studs of the walls. Get a stud finder if you don't have one.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My garage is organized. Love the new shelves. Easy to install and strong! doesn't look cheap. My wife after me to clean and organize the garage. Once completed even I said "yea baby". August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Space and time saver We put hardwoods in our house two years ago and we did not wanted to put our belongings in storage while the work was going on down stairs. So this product was the answer for us. One side wall and back wall are filled with these shelves and brackets. The horizontal bracket keeps the risers straight (provided you put it up level) for you to screw them into the wall studs. The 12 and 16 inch shelves work great for the different sizes of boxes we had our stuff in. Once we moved back in the house, the empty shelves were not empty long. A lot of the Holiday decorations that are in the attic are on the shelves now and other household items used infrequently are on them too. The nice thing about these shelves is they are not fixed once you put it up. If you decide later to change the distance between shelves it is not a big deal except for removing items from shelf to shelf. The down side is the cost. One 16" arm bracket costs $7, 1- 12" bracket is $6, The risers are $11 a piece, the horizontal bracket at the top is $22. I have 3 - 6'x16" shelves, 2 - 6'x12" shelves. So in a 6ft wide area it takes 1, horizontal piece, 5 risers (on 16" centers), 25 arm brackets totaling $175. I have 4 sets of these in my garage. Everything (almost) is up off the floor and I can get both cars in the garage now. July 26, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Clean & Simple This system is a no-brainer for DIY types. We finally met up with a sales person who knew how the parts connected. On our own was a bit crazy trying to figure out pieces. Adivice from here is start slow and keep it simple. September 27, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Closetmaid Easy to install and making It easy when installing your closetmaid shelfing August 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simple install, and added so much usability to my closet. (writing one general review and copying it to each item in the system) The kits were all just a bit shy of what I wanted so I ended up putting together my own. It came out about $20 more expensive than the closest kit. I cut down the 80" top bracket to fit the 5' closet with 3- 60" standards. The left side is made up of the drawer kits, with the right being made up of 2 shelf/hanger sets. Whole set came out to a little under $180. The Top bracket was nice as it had well spaced holes that made it easy to hit studs with a drywall anchor in between. I was able to take a few inches off one end and the rest off the other so they matched up perfectly and go wall to wall with completely solid attachment. The standards slipped into the top bracket easily and locked down tight once screwed down. I was also able to mount everything before screwing it down so I could make sure it was spaced right on the wall before fixing anything in place. I did kinda wish I'd used the Closetmaid screws so they sat flush in the holes a bit better, but the generic drywall anchors I used worked mostly fine. The drawer kit was awesome, and as I figured it, saved me about 50% over what it would have cost to buy it in pieces. With 2 drawers and their parts it would have cost as much as the kit. The drawers are very solid once the locking clips are placed in. They seemed noisy til I actually put stuff in them which seriously muffled the noise made (between the enclosed space and all the metal, it was like working in an echo chamber putting it together.) On 60" standards, they could be spaced far enough apart so as to use both the shelf on top and the drawer at the same time. For the right section of my closet I used 2- 4' shelf/hanger kits. They installed easily (there were a few extra parts as the kit comes ready for a bare wall install) and on the standards they hang nice and solid. The 2 kits are spaced far enough apart so that I can hand shirts on top, and pants below with room for shoes on the floor. All in all, I'm very happy with the whole system, and plan on putting together another set for my basement utility/storage/work room, and possibly a set for my wife's closet if she decides she wants it. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great organizing method Installed this in my closet to help organize the clutter. Was very impressed with the whole set up, can be a bit spendy if you trick it out and make shelves bigger and deeper (16 & 20 in.) but as me, I ended up installing this product in all 4 closets. Makes everything customizable and organized. August 9, 2016
