Answer:
It has to be wall mounted for structural integrity, it doesn't have any supports to allow it to be a free standing unit. Additionally, even if you did wall mount it for use as a book case, the spacing between the wires on the shelves would necessitate laying a board or stiff piece of plastic across the shelf, as thin books would fall through the spacing between the wires otherwise.
Hope this helps. :-)

Answer:
Yes you can remove the shelving, shelving brackets, the hang rods and the hang rod brackets without having to remove any screws from the wall. But if you don't unscrew the uprights from the wall you will have to buy new ones when you put it into your new closet.

Use with L-shaped closet?

This question is from ShelfTrack 7 ft. - 10 ft. White Closet Organizer Kit

February 14, 2016
Hello, we recently purchased this system in order to maximize space in our small L-shaped walk-in closet (4'3" by 6'7"). To make a smoother transition in the corner, we also purchased a corner hanging rod (http://www.homedepot.com/p/ClosetMaid-SuperSlide-12-in-Corner-Closet-Rod-25633/100078668). The contractor is supposed to install it this week.

It is my understanding that the shelves and hanging rods in this system are SuperSlide, so theoretically they should fit well together with other SuperSlide products. Unexpectedly, though, the fit between the included 5' rods and the 12" corner rod is not snug at all. Now I'm worried about the corner rod falling out. Do you have any suggestions?

Great, thank you. So does the organizer kit not include enough rod brackets to do this? Will I need to purchase 2 extra?
I also noticed in the example you mentioned in the installation guide, that it requires a corner shelf support. Is this the one I need? Read More

Answer:
Make sure you get 2 of the ShelfTrack rod brackets Model # 5629. Attach it to your wire shelf where your corner rod and straight rod meet. This will secure them at the crease where they meet. If you look up the ShelfTrack rod brackets Model # 5629 and scroll down to the INFO & GUIDES section and click on INSTRUCTIONS / ASSEMBLY there is an image that illustrates this.

ShelfTrack 7 ft. - 10 ft. White Closet Organizer Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best purchases i ever made I love, love love this closet organizer. I turned one of my bedrooms into a walk in closet and my husband who is no handyman was able to quickly and easily install this. I get so many complliments on this product. It looks better than some of the professionally installed and I saved a ton of money by installing it ourselves

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product For the price this closet organizer is great. My husband put it up with minimal difficulty and it fits our closet perfectly. Even though our closet is roughly 11' and this is up to 10', it still fit perectly. I love it!!!!!!!!!! The only thing ladies is the shoe rack is a little difficult for heels, however if you give it enough room you can store your heels underneath the rack and your flats on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Closet organizer that works! Built a new bedroom/bathroom combination with a large closet. This closet organizer was just what the doctor ordered to have adequate shelving, sturdiness and plenty of clothes hanging racks. Installation was straightforward with plenty of ideas on arranging your racks and shelves. I was really expecting another frustrating experience, but was pleasantly surprised with the logic and simplicity of the different components. I highly recommend this product if you have a space that needs organization.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this kit, plus a few tips I installed one system in my closet yesterday, and will be adding one more to the same closet in the next week. It is nice to be able to customize the layout. I am very satisfied with the purchase, but I had to do some improvising to make it work in my condo. A few tips for other buyers: I live in a condo, with concrete walls behind the drywall. I only have 0.75" behind the drywall, so the 3-4" bolts and toggles that came with the kit would not work. I used large-size Pop Toggles instead, which are about 1.25" total in length, and these seemed to work well (I'll report back if everything falls off the wall!). BIG tip - I have a level that has a magnetic strip along one side. This was AWESOME to just stick on the side of the standards (the vertical bars) while I was fastening them to the wall. I also used it when I first installed the top track, I just put the level on top and it didn't move. This seriously made installation much easier, especially because I did everything myself. Another tip - you'll need a pretty hefty hacksaw to cut the pieces down to size. You may be able to get away with NOT having to do this, but I wanted to really maximize my usage of the system. My closet width is 8.5'. The instructions have sample layouts for even 7', 8', 9' and 10' closet widths. ClosetMaid recommends to not use one of the tracks for the 8' closet, but wanting to maximize everything, I cut one of the tracks down so I had track along the entire length of my closet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and easy! I have a 5 ft by 5 ft walk in closet so I had to decide how to split this kit up between the two sides. I had a lot of fun "designing" my closet. I added the 4 drawer kit which holds ALL of my t-shirts, undies, socks (I have a lot of socks!) and summer shorts. I did not use the shoe shelf because I keep mine in clear plastic boxes - so I have them stacked on the shelves at eye level. It's so much better than stacked on the floor!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Master Closet now Truly Masterful with Closet Organizer Kit from Home Depot The Closet Organizer Kit was easy to install, the quality is excellent and this product turned a so so closet into one any prince or princess would he happy with. With adjustable shelves and racks, plenty of feet for hanging dresses, suits, pants, shirts and outerwear. It truly made the closet master worthy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I did it! I am very pleased with the outcome of this project. I am a 70 yr. old female with a cheap drill who managed to get the job done myself. Once you put in the main cross-piece, everything grows from that. My configuration differs slightly according to my specific needs. It holds everything I had hoped and the items are more easily accessible than the scattered way I stored them before. It's a great value. I have never been disappointed in Home Depot's products or their delivery/service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product for the home handyman I used the product throughout the whole house. Two 7-10' units were installed in the master closet. It is very versatile and can be modified to personal taste and needs very easily. My only problem was that the plastic anchors vs. the screw diameter are a mismatch. Before the screws would go all the way into the anchor the anchor would spin in the wall and would have to be removed and replaced with a larger anchor. I solved the problem by purchasing the next smaller diameter screws from the hardware.
