I want to hang a 65" shelf. The hang track comes in 40" or 80". Can I use the 40" hang track and have the shelf overhang the track by 12" on each side

Answer:
Better to get the 80 track and cut it with a saber or reciprocating saw. Manufacturer recommends a shelf bracket not less than 4 inch from the end. That means you have to have a standard there to hold the bracket. The store will cut the hangtrack for you. If that's still a problem, consider using straps or holders at each end or put nothing of any weight on the ends.

Answer:
Hello,
The manufacturer recommended maximum overhang is 4". So the 12" overhang won't work. You can however use the 80" track and cut it down to length. Since you'll be hanging a 65" shelf the shortest you can cut the track down to is 57". This will meet the maximum 4" overhang per side stipulation. I hope this information is helpful.
Cheers,
Chris

does this fit over the already-installed-shelf and rod installation which has "stops" every foot so that hangers will NOT slide without being removed?

Answer:
The ShelfTrack hang track system may be used with the shelving referenced if combined with standards and 12 inch brackets. But if you are seeking a continuous slide system, use the hang track, standards and brackets with new Superslide shelving. Simply add Superslide closet rod supports with a closet rod and your new system will allow hangers to slide from end to end.

Good question. I cut my tracks and measured so I could get the most holes to line up with studs.
The track doesn't have to go wall to wall.

I assessed and looked at several of these from different producers, and the ClosetMaid was heavier and more solid than its competitors. This 80 inch Track fit our room's width perfectly without cutting. We purchased 16 inch and 12 inch shelves. Found it easy to install and add the components. Wife is happy, and I like it very much (See attached image). We then repeated the shelving on the wall opposite the washer and dryer, so she now had everything she wanted. I did cut the track on the opposite side wall with a hacksaw. Also used an 18" bolt cutter to cut the shelf width. It worked fine, but it the larger shelf bars are hard and difficult to cut. Might be better to use a hacksaw.

The installation could not be easier, even if you're only casually acquainted with your drill, level, measuring tape and hacksaw. All of the components are durable, and the system is infinitely customizable so you can change the configuration of your closet as your needs change. One thing I did learn recently is that the "j hooks" which are only available in plastic on this site (to my knowledge), are available in metal and can be purchased directly from Closetmaid, so I ordered those separately prior to making my in-store purchase of the rest of the components. This system is not cheap; you could easily spend a few hundred dollars for a small walk-in closet, but I see no reason why it wouldn't last a lifetime.

The Shelftrack system with hang track and standards is pretty easy and very sturdy. I highly recommend it. Now that I have the shelves where I want them, I'll cover the extra holes in the standards with tape (so that I can remove it easily should we want to adjust the heights of the shelves) and paint them to match my closet walls.
