Yes, I had to trim mine, it would fit in the closet that I was installing it in. I used a chop saw to speed it up, plus I already had the saw set up. You could probably use a hack saw pretty quick.

Answer:
If you have the right tools you can cut the metal parts. I think a jig saw with a metal cutting blade would work. Not sure if the store would cut something special like that though. The hang track comes is 3 different lengths though and the vertical rails come in various lengths too. Not all stores have the various sizes in stock though.

the shelves can easily be cut down without worrying about how it looks because the rubber stoppers go over the cut ends.. i used a Dremel on ours with a metal cut wheel..

Answer:
Please call your local store for this inquiry, but most people cut down the 80 inch hang track at home. Another option would be to use a combination of the 40 and 24 inch hang tracks to best fit your space. Standards are available in 12, 30, 48, 60, and 84 inches, so cutting shouldn't be necessary.

Why use track?

I do NOT want to slide things around.
I do NOT want wire shelves.

What I am planning is to screw the standards directly into the studs in a garage wall. It seems obvious that the screws holding the standards to the wall take the load. In an answer here you say that the rail is what takes the major part of the load. How is that possible? It would only add one more screw to hold the standard. That seems insignificant.

I can't really tell (as you provide almost NO technical information -- I'll probably have to go to the store with a tape measure and calipers to get the info I need), but maybe you are assuming that I'll screw the rail into the top plate? That won't work as I am not starting my shelving at the TOP. To do so would require that I buy longer standards than I need. My first shelf is going to be 24 inches down from the top plate so that is where the rail would be, if I had one, and therefore it would not screw into anything more than the stud. Since I am going no lower that 24 inches, I only require a 48" standard.

Am I not understanding the concept here?

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Answer:
The top rail does take the load of the weight. If you chose not to use it then we cannot promise any kind of system maximum loading. It does not have to be screwed into the top plate but you will need to anchor it or screw it into studs. Using the hang track will also help keep your standards aligned evenly across.

If you have it on hand you'll be able to tell because they only hook on one way.. but looking at the picture above, it has the top part facing up.. the top of the standard sits beneath that lip on the top.. and hangs on the lower part..

Answer:
If you are looking at the track from the side the over hanging lip should be on top so it will look like an upside down J if that makes sense. But I would go to the the INFO & GUIDES section you can see how to set it up with the instruction guide that is there.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Previous installation did not have this shelf track so the whole shelves structure fell down, even if the load was not that heavy. Installing this shelf track, which mounts on the top plate, in addition to placing and mounting the track brackets vertically along the studs, makes for a very sturdy shelves structure. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GREAT QUALITY I HAVE USED THIS PRODUCT IN THE PAST WITH GREAT SATISFACTION! March 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Would be 5 stars except for The anchor design (for sheetrock) is terrible. Use an alternative.Other than this the rails and brackets are of good quality and easy to install. March 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Brilliant Concept The shelf track serves several purposes compared to just using the vertical shelf rails. It takes the hassle out of trying to make sure the individual vertical shelf rails are perfectly horizontal for when the shelves are mounted on them. It also helps supports the weight of everything. It also keeps the top end of the rails flush on the wall since they hook under the lip of the hang track. All you have to do is make sure the shelf track is level. The only thing is the studs in my 10 year old condo's garage are actually 15" apart, not 16". I needed to drill a couple of extra holes in the hang track to fix that issue but was easy enough. Yes, you should also screw the vertical rails in the studs not just for extra weight support, but to have a solid/rigid shelf system. October 16, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Closet Maid Hanging Track System I loved this Closet Maid Hanging Track System. I'm a single female with a bad shoulder. Did this myself, using a level, drill (could have used a thin nail and hammer to start hole in drywall), hammer and screw driver. I put up this closet on my lunch hour. Hung my clothes that evening. It's solid and I needed double rod hanging storage. This was a great option, but more expensive than the old metal bracing and end cap holders. Home Depot Staff helped me select the right products and showed me how to cut to fit my closet measurements. I spent more time buying the product than installing it. September 22, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not as good as old version This system installs relatively quickly which is a plus. In fact that is why I bought it. However I had the earlier version of this and some parts leftover. To my dismay the new version is not compatible with the old version made by the same manufacturer. The new version apparently requires less machining and is probably cheaper to make....and is less secure as far as assembly. October 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I ordered Wanted something only available online, so I needed something to fulfill my minimum order and this fit the bill. Too bad they sent everything in separate boxes. Waste of cardboard. June 23, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Shelf Track I have used this system of closet shelving quite a few times. My customers like the versatiltiy it gives them. The price is a little bit high, but my customers don't seem to mind paying that for the product they are receiving. Other shelving systems don't necessarily fasten into the studs and I have seen many of them fall or sag. The Shelf Track system fastens to multiple studs with the main track and therefore allows accessories to be mounted solidly even if no stud is in the proximity. February 17, 2015
