Answer:
I cut mine with a chop saw. I found the shelves were easier to cut to size with a bolt cutter.

Yes, I had to trim mine, it would fit in the closet that I was installing it in. I used a chop saw to speed it up, plus I already had the saw set up. You could probably use a hack saw pretty quick.

Answer:
If you have the right tools you can cut the metal parts. I think a jig saw with a metal cutting blade would work. Not sure if the store would cut something special like that though. The hang track comes is 3 different lengths though and the vertical rails come in various lengths too. Not all stores have the various sizes in stock though.

the shelves can easily be cut down without worrying about how it looks because the rubber stoppers go over the cut ends.. i used a Dremel on ours with a metal cut wheel..

Answer:
Please call your local store for this inquiry, but most people cut down the 80 inch hang track at home. Another option would be to use a combination of the 40 and 24 inch hang tracks to best fit your space. Standards are available in 12, 30, 48, 60, and 84 inches, so cutting shouldn't be necessary.

No, they only have 24", 40" and 80". Depending on your setup there are a few combinations that you can work with.. such as two 24" tracks placed with outer edges 60" apart. Then you would put one of the hanging standards between them secured only to the wall.. if there's a stud there all the better. I believe it only comes in 80" or 40", but I've used a chop saw to cut before. I flipped it over with the back up. You could also use a hack saw to cut it also. They may even be able to cut it in the store. Hope this helps.

Why use track?

I do NOT want to slide things around.
I do NOT want wire shelves.

What I am planning is to screw the standards directly into the studs in a garage wall. It seems obvious that the screws holding the standards to the wall take the load. In an answer here you say that the rail is what takes the major part of the load. How is that possible? It would only add one more screw to hold the standard. That seems insignificant.

I can't really tell (as you provide almost NO technical information -- I'll probably have to go to the store with a tape measure and calipers to get the info I need), but maybe you are assuming that I'll screw the rail into the top plate? That won't work as I am not starting my shelving at the TOP. To do so would require that I buy longer standards than I need. My first shelf is going to be 24 inches down from the top plate so that is where the rail would be, if I had one, and therefore it would not screw into anything more than the stud. Since I am going no lower that 24 inches, I only require a 48" standard.

Am I not understanding the concept here?

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Answer:
You can use the rails without the top track. The top track is an extra layer to secure the unit. I agree that the rail (bracket holder) is the primary method for securing the unit.

Answer:
The top rail does take the load of the weight. If you chose not to use it then we cannot promise any kind of system maximum loading. It does not have to be screwed into the top plate but you will need to anchor it or screw it into studs. Using the hang track will also help keep your standards aligned evenly across.

I assessed and looked at several of these from different producers, and the ClosetMaid was heavier and more solid than its competitors. This 80 inch Track fit our room's width perfectly without cutting. We purchased 16 inch and 12 inch shelves. Found it easy to install and add the components. Wife is happy, and I like it very much (See attached image). We then repeated the shelving on the wall opposite the washer and dryer, so she now had everything she wanted. I did cut the track on the opposite side wall with a hacksaw. Also used an 18" bolt cutter to cut the shelf width. It worked fine, but it the larger shelf bars are hard and difficult to cut. Might be better to use a hacksaw.

The installation could not be easier, even if you're only casually acquainted with your drill, level, measuring tape and hacksaw. All of the components are durable, and the system is infinitely customizable so you can change the configuration of your closet as your needs change. One thing I did learn recently is that the "j hooks" which are only available in plastic on this site (to my knowledge), are available in metal and can be purchased directly from Closetmaid, so I ordered those separately prior to making my in-store purchase of the rest of the components. This system is not cheap; you could easily spend a few hundred dollars for a small walk-in closet, but I see no reason why it wouldn't last a lifetime.

The Shelftrack system with hang track and standards is pretty easy and very sturdy. I highly recommend it. Now that I have the shelves where I want them, I'll cover the extra holes in the standards with tape (so that I can remove it easily should we want to adjust the heights of the shelves) and paint them to match my closet walls.
