How many end caps do I need per shelf? A 96-pack sounds like an awful lot.

I thought 96 was a bunch too. Then I looked at the way the system works.
You will need 4 per *exposed* shelf end to cover the 4 rods running end-to-end through the shelf.
If only one end is exposed on the shelf, you will need those 4 rods covered = 4 end caps; however, if both ends are exposed, you will need 8 end caps for the shelf. 96 gives you enough end caps for 12 both-sides-open shelves, or 24 Read More

Answer:
You only need an end cap if your shelf doesn't tie into another shelf, or where they are sticking out away from the wall and aren't supported by another brace or holder.
So yes 96 can be a lot if you are running just one shelf and it is from wall to wall and supported at all four corners, then you actually don't need any end caps. How ever when building in an entire custom closet they will be very handy

The community answer is correct. You will need 8 per shelf. It does come out to be cheaper per piece if you buy it in the larger bulk pack but we do offer small size packs if you need them (model# 21016).

Answer:
You'll need 8 per shelf. There's a double wire in the front, one in the middle, and one at the back. Multiply by two for each end.
96 does seem excessive, but if you have to do more than 3 shelves, it's cheaper to buy in bulk. And that's not just cheaper per cap - that's overall cheaper!

I need the 3/16 size only. If they are 3/16 or you could help me in finding them at this same cost, I would appreciate it very much.

Answer:
If you are wanting to know the inside opening diameter, they are somewhat flexible and will likely fit either 1/4 or 3/16th inch. However if you are inquiring as to there length, this too I've found varies somewhat from about 1/4 to 3/16.

These are 1/4 inch. We make do make a 3/16 size but you will have to go to the pro desk at your local Home Depot and have them special order it for you.

Answer:
I just measured some of the spares I had lying around. The inner diameter is 0.25". The inner depth is 0.33". If you can't find a smaller size, you could always squeeze some epoxy in the caps before placimg them on the wire shelves.

I have never seen these in any area stores, however they may be special ordered.
If color is really an issue you can likely find a spray paint for them that would match or come close to matching in the paint department in the store.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not sure it's what I needEd. Not sure this is what I needed. Just needed small rubber tips for an "off brand use". ...not for wire shelving. These were still too big. Maybe didn't ask the right person for help. April 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well made and will stop table top scratches! Made for metal wire closet end caps. However, I used these great little caps for stopping tabletop decorative items with little metal legs from scratching or sliding on a table top or any other flat surface. I could only find them in white, as I preferred them to be black. Way to many in the bag for my needs, so I just gave them away to friends for their possible needs. December 31, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Way to many in the package I only needed two caps to complete my job not 96. There should be a larger choices of bag quantities. i.e. 5, 10 December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by it works and safely Closet racks when cut can be very sharp and very destructive. These little buggers are awesome. Always better to have more than you need. They are very versatile. December 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by End caps for wire shelving End Cap Protectors for wire shelving providing for safe installation and nice finish look. February 26, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great finishing touch for my project I was planning to update our pantry from the existing 18" deep wall unit that was starting to fall apart due to the weight. We had used the ClosetMaid system before, in our games closet, with great success. My wife insisted that we have an adjustable solution, so I investigated the changes that had been made to the ClosetMaid system since we had installed the games closet. One of the things that I could now find was these 'end caps'. In the games closet, it's not a big deal that the ends of the shelves are simply cut metal, as the shelves pretty much go wall-to-wall. However, in the pantry, both ends are exposed and I didn't want the possibility of somebody getting a cut from the rough-cut edges. After cutting, my daughter and I filed the edges to remove that possibility, and then installed the end caps. WOW! What a difference! It looks like something a professional would install. Even my wife commented that it turned out much nicer than my other projects, and the end caps were one of the things that she mentioned added to the 'niceness' of the project. Great finishing touch for anything that will be out in the open. It made me look like I was a professional! August 25, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Unexpected uses Worked great These are intended for use on shelving material however I need something to place on the ends of stock panels to cover the rough ends that are on the ends of the welded wire ridged fencing panels and these work great! I used some silicone caulk/adhesive on each fire end then placed one of these white caps over each wire end and they are working great! I have used them in the past for their intended use and they worked graet in that application as well. June 23, 2015
