Answer:
Hi mike,
Neither the knife, nor you, is defective.
There is a locking mechanism directly behind the blade on the handle. It is a curved, metal band incorporated into the handle that you press with your thumb to release the blade.
Press the notched locking band to the side to unlock the blade. It is the curved piece that has notches under the handle, not the notches on the back of the knife.
Thank you Read More

Tito- To close the knife, you will need to pull the rigged metal bar towards the frame of the knife with one hand and pull the blade down into the frame.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 16 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A solid strong folding knife with quality wood side scales I needed a quantity of identical knives to use as gifts for my employees. This Coast brand folding knife is the perfect item as I can personalize the wood scales with the employees names. The Home Depot ordering system worked well for me on this clearance item. I was able to locate the quantity of knives that I needed at several different stores in my area. They got my order together and notified me, then I simply picked them up. Excellent! May 20, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Almost perfect I work as an HVAC installer so this is my everyday use tool. Lasted two months before I needed to sharpen which was impressive. Very durable has defiantly held up against the test of time! Except the thumb stud for opening broke and fell out after about a week, and u must have a very small star key bit to tighten blade as it tends to loosen up over time. That's why I give it a almost perfect rating. Really can't get any better at this price. Buy this knife! August 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great knife! It's just what I was looking for. Only problem was that it took a while to figure out the locking mechanism - the instructions that came with it discussed the locking mechanism for four different styles of folding knives, not the one I had purchased. But I figured it out in the end. February 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good The knife came sharp and works very well. I am an electrician and us this knife to strip cable. It works very well. My only complaint is that the wood handle was a little loose and the bolt is so small it was hard to find a driver to tighten it. I had to use the husky precision screwdriver set to find a bit small enough. The lifetime warranty makes this a sure buy though. July 3, 2014
