How do you deactivate the smoke detector?

I'm confused on how you deactivate the alarm. In the instructions it says to clean the smoke detector yearly by taking it off the mounting plate and wiping it down as well as blowing out/vacuuming the detector, but I thought it deactivated when you removed it from the mounting plate. I can't find any info online on what exactly it means to deactivate the smoke detector. Is it ok to remove the detector from the mounting plate without causing it to deactivate? How do you deactivate it?

There is a button on the side of the smoke alarm that gets pushed in to activate the alarm. When you turn the alarm onto the mounting ring that pushes the button up or in. When you turn it the other way you deactivate it by letting the button come back down or out. When turning the alarm on to the ring you can feel 11 tiny catches or teeth. When you get to 6 going either way the next one will activate or Read More

Answer:
I don't know what the California requirements are, but I'll answer you 1-3 requirements.
1. Yes the date of manufacture is on the back,
2. Yes there is a sticker on the side of the unit for you to put the date you install it.
3. The closest thing to a hush feature would be to deactivate it. Just turn it counterclockwise and that deactivates it.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 139 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad product Bought one of these about a year ago. The "issue" date on the product is 2015 May 08. Started beeping and then alarm went off every few minutes. Couldn't shut if off with the hush button so had to deactivate, which kills the system permanently. Other reviews show this happens to them and battery does not last anything close to 10 years. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good buy I am glad I bought this double pack whcih is cheaper then the singles. The way it works the batteries are in standby mode until you activate them. Mount the bracket and twist the alarm on and you hear a beep. The battery is then activated. The 10 years then starts. Once mounted and you hear the beep, then they want you to press the TEST button so it beeps again. DO NOT unscrew it from the base. That will deplete the battery. Once mounted let it mounted. To silence press the silenece button do NOT unscrew from bracket. I put a mark on the silence button so it is easy to spot as the test and the silence button look alike, try reading the words when mounted. April 2, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I'm excited to put this up. We've been needing a smoke alarm in each bedroom. The 3 Pack smoke alarm was the perfect purchase. Very easy to install and I was able to put them to use for our 3 bedroom home. Be sure to follow the direction on how to install. Very simple and took no more than 5 minutes to install all 3 smoke alarms. Have a marker, screwdriver and a ladder ready for use. Once you have all smoke alarm backing screwed and installed to the wall be sure to put in the housing and line it up and the smoke alarm is armed and ready. Have fun. January 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy To Install / Good Product Installed all 3 of them in under an hour. If you are replacing old wired smoke detectors, the new bracket will not fit the box. All I did was remove the old smoke detector and used one of the screws of the original one that is screwed to the electrical box, then used one of the supplied screw for the other hole. You can set it to where the new smoke detector covers the electrical box and the hole in the ceiling essentially installing it over the old one in the same location. I tucked in the old wiring and made sure they are capped. It looks great. June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Inexpensive Smoke Detector; Easy to Install We live in a condo and were required to add two smoke detectors with the 10-year lithium batteries. We received them in just a few days. They were very easy to install, and the fire marshal's inspector signed off on them. June 28, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by just purchased house hasn't caught fire yet so how can you rate it more than average April 14, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Random Hush Beep I purchase 5 of these units at first. 3 were defective and would random beep in the middle of the night. It is like the Hush Button is pushed or fails. I noticed the date codes for the defective units were Sep and Oct 2015. The date code Dec 23 , 2015 seemed to work until last night. These units are 4 weeks old and I was woken up twice last night with the random Hush Beep. Returned to Home Depot today. This seems to be a problem with the 10 year lithium battery units be they First Alert or Kidde. June 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by HORRIBLE PURCHASE THIS IS A 10 YR PRODUCT WITH A SEALED BATTERY. I HAVE A RENTAL PROPERTY AND INSTALLED THESE AFTER BUYING THEM ON 5/18/15. ON 5/27/16, I WENT TO CLEAN OUT THE HOUSE, (DIDN'T NEED TO AS THE PREVIOUS TENANTS WERE VERY CLEAN) AND ALL OF THE UNITS WERE CHIRPING. NOT JUST ONE, ALL SIX OF THEM!!! CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE, ASKED FOR A SUPERVISOR AND WAS TRANSFERRED TO VOICEMAIL. BAD PRODUCT, BAD SERVICE, BAD COMPANY!!!!!!!!! I WOULD RATE THEM WORSE BUT THERE WASN'T THAT OPTION. May 31, 2016
