How do you deactivate the smoke detector?

I'm confused on how you deactivate the alarm. In the instructions it says to clean the smoke detector yearly by taking it off the mounting plate and wiping it down as well as blowing out/vacuuming the detector, but I thought it deactivated when you removed it from the mounting plate. I can't find any info online on what exactly it means to deactivate the smoke detector. Is it ok to remove the detector from the mounting plate without causing it to deactivate? How do you deactivate it?

There is a button on the side of the smoke alarm that gets pushed in to activate the alarm. When you turn the alarm onto the mounting ring that pushes the button up or in. When you turn it the other way you deactivate it by letting the button come back down or out. When turning the alarm on to the ring you can feel 11 tiny catches or teeth. Answer:
I don't know what the California requirements are, but I'll answer you 1-3 requirements.
1. Yes the date of manufacture is on the back,
2. Yes there is a sticker on the side of the unit for you to put the date you install it.
3. The closest thing to a hush feature would be to deactivate it. Just turn it counterclockwise and that deactivates it.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good buy I am glad I bought this double pack whcih is cheaper then the singles. The way it works the batteries are in standby mode until you activate them. Mount the bracket and twist the alarm on and you hear a beep. The battery is then activated. The 10 years then starts. Once mounted and you hear the beep, then they want you to press the TEST button so it beeps again. DO NOT unscrew it from the base. That will deplete the battery. Once mounted let it mounted. To silence press the silenece button do NOT unscrew from bracket. I put a mark on the silence button so it is easy to spot as the test and the silence button look alike, try reading the words when mounted. April 2, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Kidde Brand is CodeOne.....does NOT work. I picked this alarm because I was having trouble with 5-brand new Kidde wired alarms that I purchased 5 months ago. They randomly chirped 1-2x/wk. No reasons for any of the chirping. Driving us and the dogs crazy! So, come to find out Kidde also makes CodeOne. Seriously, we just cannot get away from this company. We installed the 3 units which are not interconnected or wired. We followed all directions completely. Installed on Sunday. Solitary chirp on Thursday evening. ALL 3-alarms are showing that they are functioning properly. No fires, no smoke, no one is cooking, and no dusting. And, of course, Kidde customer service is only open M-F from 8-5pm. I can understand why houses burn down and owners are not alerted because they don't have a smoke alarm. I am ready to pull them all down and never put another one up ever again. With all the breakthroughs in technology over the past 50-100 years, can they just make a smoke alarm that actually works! September 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product. Need to clarify how the unit get de-activated and how to re-activate? Otherwise it seems to be working fine. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install I bought this set of three and had them install in less than 30 minutes.. Very easy to activate. Plenty loud to wake you or get your attention. After reading some of the reviews the batteries seem to have a problem. If mine does I'll be back to write another review. I wanted the 10 year battery life since I have one installed on a vaulted ceiling and don't care much to be climbing up there it change the battery and when I get into my older years. So far they are working fine. August 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best value on a great product This is the absolute best bargain on a truly worry free product. No annoying low battery beeps in the middle of the night, or having to locate batteries, climb ladders and replace batteries for 10 years! August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value I have installed these in many apartments, they are a good value as long as tenent's don't take them down. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Installation is very easy I just purchased 5 and installed them. Each took maybe 10 minutes tops to install each one. Just twist onto the bracket and that activates it with a chirp. I purchased these since they have the 10 year battery life. After reading some of the reviews that is the major problem with them. So far I'm satisfied with the way they get installed. If I have a problem later with the batteries then I'll be back on to give it a different review. August 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad product Bought one of these about a year ago. The "issue" date on the product is 2015 May 08. Started beeping and then alarm went off every few minutes. Couldn't shut if off with the hush button so had to deactivate, which kills the system permanently. Other reviews show this happens to them and battery does not last anything close to 10 years.
