Answer:
Hi John, you have to disconnect the alarm from the installation trim ring. Unplug the wire harness and then find the battery door. Check out section 6 called maintenance. This will give you step by step instructions. Here is the link below.

Hardwired 120-Volt Inter-Connectable Smoke Detector with Battery Backup is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Updated Smoke Detector Installed Effortlessly I was replacing a phase one replacement by Kidde for a twenty three year old wired FireX smoke alarm setup. The wire-only and no battery initial replacement for the FireX system started beeping mysteriously. When I looked for replacements, I discovered Kidde had a new meeting code wired solution (so that all the smoke alarms sound off if one is tripped) that has a battery as well, for times when the electricity goes out and there is a smoke situation. I had changed over some of the mounting and electrical connectors quite easily a few years ago, so this one simply snapped in in about 10 seconds. It appears to work just fine, and now I have protection even if the power is out due to the backup 9V battery unit. Note that even if you have to rewire and put up a new mounting/connector, it is done easily in about 5 minutes if you are a do it yourselfer. For those of you with 10+ year old systems, get new detectors - they are inexpensive and easy to install, and keep your family alive after the 10 year life span of detectors expire. Plus it is typically local code.
