Answer:
Hi John, you have to disconnect the alarm from the installation trim ring. Unplug the wire harness and then find the battery door. Check out section 6 called maintenance. This will give you step by step instructions. Here is the link below.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 24 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value Good price, plus it includes the backup battery. Very easy to install. I replaced the old smoke alarms of a different brand without having to drill any new holes. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Updated Smoke Detector Installed Effortlessly I was replacing a phase one replacement by Kidde for a twenty three year old wired FireX smoke alarm setup. The wire-only and no battery initial replacement for the FireX system started beeping mysteriously. When I looked for replacements, I discovered Kidde had a new meeting code wired solution (so that all the smoke alarms sound off if one is tripped) that has a battery as well, for times when the electricity goes out and there is a smoke situation. I had changed over some of the mounting and electrical connectors quite easily a few years ago, so this one simply snapped in in about 10 seconds. It appears to work just fine, and now I have protection even if the power is out due to the backup 9V battery unit. Note that even if you have to rewire and put up a new mounting/connector, it is done easily in about 5 minutes if you are a do it yourselfer. For those of you with 10+ year old systems, get new detectors - they are inexpensive and easy to install, and keep your family alive after the 10 year life span of detectors expire. Plus it is typically local code. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good replacements Good replacement for the contractor smoke detectors that came with the house. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kiddle Smoke Detector I looked at several smoke detectors at Home Depot before choosing this particular one. It has the best price performance ratio. The instruction booklet is excellent and easy to understand. The detector itself seems to be good quality. As an added bonus it comes with a battery backup already installed. December 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works great I bought this to replace an existing one that wasn,t working properly. December 8, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Completely satisfied replaced original without having to change the base, which was important to me March 31, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by old inventory i bought 7 online for one location and 8 from the local store for another location. the dates that these units were manufactured (for the online purchase) was 2013...while the ones in the store were made in 2011! i am trying to be proactive and keeping the units in my home "fresh"....but Home Depot is not doing me any favors with stale merchandise. the actual units were easy to install. about 5 minutes per unit and they are white, unlike the Firex units they replace which were off white. blend into the ceiling nicely. June 3, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy install Worked great for my replacement situation. Base plate has multiple holes to punch to match your existing situation. The red line is capped in case you are not interconnecting the home alarm system together. Had an existing connector so cut the wires off at old alarm and used wire connector caps to connect the black and white wires together. Easy to see green light. Comes with a 9 volt battery.
