Customer Questions & Answers

Will this device work on a car battery that sits on a car trailer for long periods of time that operates a wench

Asked by: Darrell
Yes, that's exactly what it's for. I have three of these 1-watt solar charger - one for the motorcycle, one for the mower, and one for the jetski. I keep the chargers permanently attached when the toys are not in use.

Over Charging

Does this item have over charging protection for 12 volt batteries?
Asked by: hinckleyguy
The specs state that it protects from overcharging, but the device is so inexpensive that I find that hard to believe. But, on the other hand, I think to protect from overcharging all that's needed is one inexpensive electronic component so it probably does protect against overcharging; beside the device wouldn't be very useful if it didn't. I've long forgotten what I learned in my electronics classes so I don't know what that component is. Also, I purchased the Home Depot 12-v solar charge controller model no. SPC-7A; and this works nicely to show that the charger is charging, and protects from overcharging or discharging. Lastly, be sure to use only the leads provided with this solar charger. They are reversed from leads you find w/ regular plug-in battery charger/maintainers. I substituted a set of leads from my plug-in charger and the plug-in charger indicator light showed that it was not charging. I read of this same problem with this solar charger elsewhere. It must be Chinese-made.

The specs state that the 1W Coleman solar charger has overcharge/discharge protection but my digital meter shows this solar charger charging at 15V and another at 14V, is that overcharging? One other is at 13V. What should it read?
Asked by: Roberto
Open circuit voltage for this solar panel ranges between 15V and 23V. Operating or working voltage ranges between 13V and 15V. Overcharging refers to the state of charge of the battery. This means that actual battery voltage (without the solar panel connected) should never surpass 14.2V approximately.

Customer Reviews

1-Watt Power Sports Charger is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Coleman 1-watt Power Sports Charger - seems to work well I bought two of the Coleman 1-watt power sports chargers before I saw that there were 2-watt ($15) and 6-watt Coleman ($40) chargers available, but the 1-watt model seems to maintain my motorcycle battery and boat battery. I've now been using them for about two months.
