The Coleman 30 Amp Digital Charge Controller is the ideal solution for preventing overcharging of your 12-Volt batteries and protecting solar panels. It contains a digital display that provides either the charging current or the battery voltage on the LCD digital meter. A charge controller is an essential part of nearly all power systems that charge batteries. Its purpose is to keep your batteries properly fed and safe for the long-term. The basic functions of this controller are to block reverse current and protect against battery overcharge, battery discharge, electrical overload, and/or display battery status and the flow of power.

Can I up the wire size to #8 and go longer than 2 feet ?

As far as the length; Increased wire size will lower resistance required to make your leads longer. If you use an Ohm meter to measure the suggested AWG size and length THEN compare it to the AWG and length of the larger AWG wire. If the resistance of the bigger/longer wire is LOWER or the same as than the resistance of the thinner/shorter wire than go for it. As long as it can be properly attached to termination points on both sides. Invest in a good meter, it will answer a lot of these type of questions. (read the instructions as well)

Can this be used with a optima agm battery

Yes. Depending on the factory set points for your battery, the maximum voltage on the controller can be adjusted to accommodate your battery, via the Led-Acid and Gel selector.

If connecting 2 of the grape 100 watt panels in parallel to this controller do I need a blocking diode for each panel?

This depends on the model of the panel. Contact Grape Solar for the answer to question . Anytime you connect two separate power output systems in parallel each system must be able to protect themselves form the other system.

Its larger than I need for this installation, but I wanted the ability to expand the system if needed. I do plan on adding another 100 watt solar panel. The charge controller was easy to install and the instructions were easy to follow. I just came back from a week long camping trip and the solar system worked perfectly. I shopped around and with the free shipping, Home Depot's price was a good deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and easy to install. Working great! This Coleman 12 Volt 30 Amp Digital Solar charge controller works better than I expected. I'm using it with two 160 watt solar panels, four 12 volt deep cycle marine batteries connected in parallel and a 6000 watt 12 volt inverter for my power source. All are working Great!!!!

It has performed as advertised for about two months and test on the batteries show that float voltage and charging to be spot on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like the digital readout The 30 amp Coleman charge controller is produced by Sunforce. So far it has worked as expected. Make sure to use the required gauge wires or heavier to reduce power loss. Thicker wire(lower gauge) and shorter distances are best.
