Customer Questions & Answers

What size hole saw was used for installation of the 5" can?

Asked by: Bob101
5 3/4" Was able to answer my own question with the template once the product arrived. The hole needs to be no larger that 5 3/4". Unfortunately this is just about the oddest whole saw size known to man. No major home improvement store carry a 5 3/4" hole saw. One is available with a little searching. MK Morse AV92 Hole saw. Amazon $40.00 or Team Tools $60.00 I ended up using the Milwaukee adjustable hole cutter. So far so good. It works with the 5 3/4" for the recessed lights and a 4" hole for a new fan that I have installed. Adjust for 2" to 7". I still have more cans lights to install so time will tell if it will hold up. Plan on installing speakers at some point to so it should work well for that as well. It also includes a plastic shield to collect most of the dust created drilling the hole. There are also replacement parts for the adjustable cutter. Milwaukee 49-56-0320 Adjustable hole cutter. Amazon $25.00 or Home Depot $25.00. Milwaukee 49-56-0290 Replacement parts.

is the bulb socket height adjustable?

is the socket for the bulb loose in the housing? as in it would clip into the trim like ive seen menards store stock move to? i have a lot of spare trims for recessed lights right now, but theyre the just the plain, almost flat ones that attach to the housing with 2 springs and whose housing has the bulb socket fixed into place.
Asked by: mdaul87
The Commercial Electric trims that are compatible with this recessed housing (can) all provide support for the socket. The trim model HBR513A (SKU# 624831) provides the user with 2 or 3 socket height position options.

Customer Reviews

5 in. Aluminum Recessed IC Remodel Airtight Housings (6-Pack) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from BEWARE OF DIMENSIONS Installed six housings for LED lights, easy and simple to install. Cans were somewhat oval by packaging but straightened ok. Clips a little flimsy and deserve watching closely. However, the big Problem was the dimension of the Cannister and the size of hole required. THEY ARE NOT 5" CANS!! They are actually 5 1/2" cans, and require 5 3/4" holes for them to make the turn to seat. No where on the specs is this mentioned. My $35 expenditure for a 5" hole saw was for not, and, the five inch holes I had drilled had to be enlarged.....a very messy business. The only mention of this was on a template packaged withe the housings with instructions to use a key hole saw! If you are as exacting l as I am about being precise, you know the keyhole saw is not an option, especially with the very small flange on the can. Also, there are no such thing as a 5 3/4" hole saw.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good deal if OK with shortcomings Decent build quality, but given flimsy adhesive sealing patches, not sure how "airtight" it will be, nor whether it would meet code. There is wiring from the connection box to the can, ending in an Edison socket loose inside the can. The socket has a bracket coming up the sides with no place in the can to attach it to; perhaps something (like a reflector) attaches to it, but there is no mention of it on the instructions. I had to call Home Depot customer service to get their electrician's guess as to what it might be for. So in my application with LED modules with trim, that loose socket will end up sitting on top of the LED module, unless I tie it up somehow. Overall a good value (purchased at half the cost of the equivalent Halo cans), as long as you're willing to live with the shortcomings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fantasic cans compared to compition I needed a total of eight cans. These 6 commercial electric cans installed so much easier it's amazing. The clips work with zero modification and the cans are sturdy. The only issue i had was the lip that goes around the base at the drywall sometimes were not completely covered by the baffle (see picture). This was due to bending during shipment. I highly recommend these over halo. I pared these cans with 5000p open covers and they look great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Install, Has No Trim Kit These can lights are easy to install. I didn't pay attention when I bought these, so just be aware that these come without the baffle trim and you'll need to factor that into the cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 in Recessed are my favorite I'm not certain why so many people install 6in housing units. I'm in love with the 5in units which I think offer a much nicer look vs the larger 6in. The Commercial Electric IC remodel units are great and easy to install. I used 9 for a hall, bathroom and closet reno. Love them. Always remember to pick up some grommets to make insulation safe and easy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stay away from these. The slot for clips on these has an opening from the base of clip to the front of clip. Thus if pushed too hard the clip can rip through the opening. The customer support is non-existent from manufacturer. I called just 2 days after 90 day return is up and asked for replacement clips as i do not want to return, the customer service said this is canadian model and not for sale in USA. Then they said will call back if clips are available. No call so far. Stick with Halos much better than these. Price savings is not worth the trouble and also due to slot opening i mentioned, i will not consider these airtight. Not sure why they are rated as such.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not bad for the money... you get what you pay, it does the job, cheap, but at the end you cannot see it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Clips are too hard Clips are too hard. I use hammer, screw driver, all means, but clips are not fitting. I went to attic, and try to pull clips, but no luck. After spending so much time returning this junk. Also 5 in recess lights looks so good, not sure why Home Depot sell more 6 in, very hard to find 5in fixture.
