Spray foam insulation

I was told by the fire inspector today to get information regarding these lights and spray Insulation. I was told that I may need to build boxes around these lights and use regular fiberglass insulation around the lights. Where can I get this information? The electrical inspector states that these lights are fine regarding the foam insulation sprayed right up to the lights. The specs for the lights say that they are rated for zero clearance... 2 different inspectors, 2 different views.

IMO : You're always better off wrapping the can light ( IC rated only ) with spun fiberglass and then is spray foam is used around it NO big deal . A better method would be " Boxing " the unit wrapped with fiberglass then covering temporarily while spray foam is shot on . This ensures complete compliance with ANY regulations and also makes remodel or removal super simple ...

Can I use these over a shower with any trim and an incandescent bulb, or do I need a shower trim?

The shower ceilings are into the attic, so I want the airtight, direct IC housings. However the Commercial Electric trims labeled for showers (such as HBR70WH) say they are for non-IC housings only. I want to be able to dim the light as well, hence the rationale for staying with incandescent lights.

Yes. I have two of these in my shower on the second floor. Just make sure they are properly sealed and you won't have any issues. Go with an LED light that is rated for wet locations and you will be fine

It stumped me as to why the breaker kept getting triggered and it managed to ruin two dimmer switches as well. Not impressed. It also costs me hours of time. I would suggest using old work style cans instead, they are easier to swap out if they are defective.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fine if you don't have to shorten the braces If you need to put one into a space smaller than the standard 16" joist spacing the braces must be shortened. This involves pulling apart the two section of each brace and snapping off the ends of the sections at locations were the metal is notched. On the ones I got the notches must not have been deep enough as the ends did not snap off without bending back and forth several times. As a result the ends of the shortened sections were badly distorted and would not fit back together again. I had to use a grinder to remove the distorted ends. A job that should have taken 10 min took an hour. I've used other brands that did snap off nicely.
