All I wish to know is does it test a battery under a preset load, as though the battery was actually in use? This tester appears to be very similar to the Gardner Bender GBT-500A, which does so.

Answer:
I find the load current placed on a battery under test to range from a reasonable load for AAA batteries to insignificant load for other batteries. When testing 3V cr2032 batteries the unit could not tell the different between a cell that was new or one that had 25-percent capacity remaining as the load is only one milliampere under test. While the battery tested good, it did not have enough capacity to Read More

While the battery tested good, it did not have enough capacity to operate my garage door opener that requires more than one milliampere of current to operate. Externally loading of some batteries may be required for a more accurate idea of a battery's remaining capacity. Read Less

Answer:
I picked one up today to try it out and it appears it does test under load.
The owners manual shows a load current for different battery sizes/types, e.g. 50 mA for AAA and 150 mA for AA.
I had several batteries that were within a few mV of each other using a high impedance DMM that showed a significant variation when tested with this unit, suggesting a difference in battery internal resistance and Read More

Answer:
The battery test meter should not be used to check electrical outlets. Doing so would damage the meter so that it would no longer work.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Simple Affordable Unit This is a decent unit for its price if a user understands its limitations and capabilities. The manufacturer could have built in better current loading for each of the types of batteries the unit is designed to test. Placing the user manual online would help potential customers better understand the unit's capabilities by listing the battery load for each voltage range. January 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great purchase for every home. simple to operate, and easy to read dial., and a worthwhile tool. June 2, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Information Lacking there is no information regarding the extremely important cell loading used when testing. when a cell is unloaded it may show a voltage close to the full cell voltage of an unused cell. when properly loaded, a cell voltage will indicate the true cell health. This is due to an increase of internal resistance as a cell is used. a schematic of this device would be helpful but cannot be found. please indicate the cell loading in milliamps for each switch position. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great battery tester I was looking for a battery tester that could handle all the basic voltages and types of batteries around the home. This tester was much less expensive than many I looked at, but tests everything I've thrown at it so far. It is accurate and fast. For me having the leads is a plus. A great tester at an excellent value! I highly recommend it. BTW, you can't find it on Amazon - Home Depot comes through again! October 27, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice and simple, good value. Easy to use. Pays for itself easy when you consider the number of batteries used in a household, and how many just go to waste not knowing if they are still good. February 10, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by simple and excellent device good accurate readings, it is light, and easy to use. July 22, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great little tester Worked fine out of the box, with intuitive controls and probes. Tested dozens of batteries in just a few minutes (found 2 dead ones). Great value, was just what I was looking for. December 27, 2011
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worked one time, now pegs itself to right This is the second one I have had. Green from Home Depot and another one I got from walmart. Both of them just go off the scale when you test any battery. August 25, 2012
