I bought the double bookshelf from another retailer 8 years ago. In that time I have moved twice & I am impressed with how sturdy & good looking they continue to be! I have a serious library & other cheaper bookshelves would bow under the weight of my books- not this bookshelf! The shelves are solid wood & very sturdy. They are adjustable and the unit is just a beautiful piece of furniture. I get complements on them whenever people come over. The only con is the price- too high!

For the price and the descripton of an oak bookcase. It was oak on the front plate of top and botom of bookcase. The backing was two different shades of color of particle board taped together. Not worth the money i rather go to furniture store ans get a bookcase. Will never buy any furniture thing from home depot again.

I purchased this bookcase to match two existing bookcases. The photograph seemed to show that it was a match. When I opened the box, I found the color was darker than the photograph. I doublechecked the item number to make sure I didn't get the wrong one. Strangely, there were several small wooden spacers in the box that were a perfect match to the color in the photograph. I assume the factory changed the stain. Other than the color, the bookcase is acceptable.

The bookcase arrived in kit form in a cardboard box with the polystyrene foam packing material severely broken up into a million small pieces (what a mess trying to clean it up and dispose of the polystyrene). Upon opening the box and inspecting the items I noticed that the front covering of the vertical support divider had become unglued and sprung open over 18 inches in length from the top. Not sure if it was a shipping or manufacturing packing fault. Rather than return the bookcase I fixed it with some wood glue and clamps to re-glue it back down.
Overall the assemble went well and took about 1.5hrs. The rear panel cover I had to re-sellotape the folding joins as all the loose polystyrene foam in the box had stuck to the sellotape panels fold joints and they couldn't be opened to set flat against the back of the bookcase. Screwing the rear panels on was time consuming exercise.
The other issue is the bottom side panels do not have any corner blocks to stop the front foot board from twisting inwards. It is a bad design flaw and should be addressed by the manufacturer.
For the price I was expecting a better quality product.

Very solid unit. Assembles easily. Backing comes in four pieces and is hard to hide seams. Overall good shelf.

While the Shelves are made of manufactured wood, you wouldn't know it. The technique used makes the shelves feel and look like solid wood. Even the backing is made of a Thin Plywood like material. Very solid and sturdy and putting it together is easy.

On the plus side, they are easy to assemble. On the negative side - every\thing else. Made of particle board with a thin slice of veneer glued on, the unit comes with a lot of excess glue to get off and poorly filled nail holes. The worst part if that on the edges (say the front of the shelves) there are large gaps between the veneer strips where they were fit poorly. Glue shows through, giving them a very work, poor-quality look. Considering that we had looked and looked for the right shelves to create a library (we bought five units) my wife wanted to put the best spin on it. She said it makes it look like a really old set of shelves that have the edges chipping and worn out from decades of use. Okay - but I wanted new and classy. These would have been a good buy for $100 at a discount store, but a big disappointment at the price and with my high expectations. And apparently don't try to load a photo of a negative review. I had two to show the poor workmanship, but they won't load in either chrome or Explorer in less than 30 minutes (they are well under the supposed 5 mb limit).

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by BenT Be aware! 95% particle board!
"GENUINE WOOD VENEER" What a joke! Only the surface paper thin layer is wood, all the boards are particle board. You spend three times the money for a particle board bookcase with 2/3 for the paper thin wood finish. I was expecting at least plywood construction with solid wood inserts, neither. But does look good and seems sturdy. Did not want to assemble. No hassle return to local HD store.
