Under 2013 Title 24 Code the formula is as follows: Total attic( or roof area ) in square feet, divided by 150. This gives you total square feet of attic ventilation required. Multiply that number by 144 ( square inches in a square foot ). Vents are specified by net free air flow in square inches. Take your total square inches required and divide that by 2. ( Total number of vents should be balanced between intake and exhaust ) There are many vent shapes, styles, and sizes. I.E. ridge vent, half rounds, gable vent. If you cant balance intake verses exhaust exactly, always provide slightly more intake vents to meet the total net square inch ventilation requirements.

Answer:
In So. California you need 1 square ft. of attic vent for every 150 Sq. ft. of your house.
Example: 1800 sq. ft. home divided by 150 sq. ft. equals 12 vents. Vent size 12"x12"minimum
Cities and communities have different requirements due to climate and fire restrictions so check the building code requirements in your area. in most cases it can be googled.
