It offers an efficient way to reduce cooling costs, while keeping your whole house more comfortable. I want this installed on a peak wall (highest wall in the house) near the ceiling and the fan will vent into the attic. The information says to install in a ceiling only. Does that mean it has to be installed flat or is standing up ok? Is this the correct whole house fan to put in my home on that wall?
Asked by: Jane
Yes the unit needs to be installed horizontally (flat). It is not designed to be installed vertically. If you install the unit vertically the shutters will not open and close properly, it will add extra stress to the motor which will cause it to burn up, and installing it in properly will void the warranty on the unit.

Customer Reviews

30 in. Belt Drive Whole House Fan with Shutter is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Functional, but disappointing. This was purchased to replace a Sears whole house fan that finally died after 30 years. This fan is noticeably lighter and not as sturdy. On low, the fan seems to be pretty weak and ineffective. You have to turn it to high to really get some air moving, but its very noisy. Will keep it, since taking it out and returning it would be a pain, but I do wish I would have sprung for a better one instead. You get what you pay for!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design and noisey I order this whole house fan because the reviews seemed to be fair. Installing this unit was a mess. Motor needs to be flipped around and part of the fan frame has to come off to remove the motor. The screws on the motor mount were hitting the belt so I had to trim them. Also the fan is noise and the shutters are cheap.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Fan Overall a solid product. I would have given it a five but It had defective materials in the fan box. Both defective parts were minor issues, but were a bit of an annoyance. An average skilled man should expect to take 4 to 6 hours to install this. However, it is a very simple and straightforward process. While 10,000 CFM wasn't as much air moving as I thought it was, it's still gets the job done. An older house that I once had a whole house fan in would blow your hair around. This is more like a gentle breeze in a 1200 square foot house. You'll still cool off, but you won't likely get that "ahhhhh" feeling unless it's a cool night.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Blades flew off! We installed the fan per instructions, turned it on to test it, and the blade unit flew off. It's a good thing my husband had the shutter installed. When he went to tighten the blade unit, the bolt was an odd size and extremely difficult to access. There was no way we were uninstalling this thing to return it. Poor design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great for the money I am a licensed electrician and have installed over 200 of these fans and they have NEVER taken me more than 5 - 6 hours to install. yes the other comment about having a truss type attic is true but you don't need to cut out ceiling joists to install this it is designed to straddle a ceiling joist it comes with the cheap plastic filler pieces but I prefer to use thin plywood it makes for a way better install. The 2 speed switch is as easy as it gets its very self explained. If you're uncomfortable working with electrical please call a licensed electrician but the actual installation of these is easy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The idea of a whole house fan is fantastic. ... The idea of a whole house fan is fantastic. This fan was relatively easy to it's odits odd that the fan is not the same size as the loover making it harder than it should be. The switches also are cheap, especially the high low one. Expect to replace in a year or so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet fan This fan is so much quieter than my old one. I can sleep with this one on no problem. I would recommend this to cool down the house and save on air conditioning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love Whole House Fans You can't beat this fan for the price. Way more quiet than the direct drive fans. I had a direct drive at my previous home and it always sounded like an airplane. This belt drive sucks plenty of volume and isn't very loud. For those who have a difficult time installing it,. I would recommend paying someone. It isn't very hard to do but you need to pay attention to what you are doing. The only thing I am having problems with in the louvers. They rattle when the fan is running. I went to the manufacturers website and found a solution in the forums. Going to try and add the felt or rubber strips to each louver to add some weight and hopefully cut down on the vibration. I think that will work. Other than that,. can't imagine anyone complaining about this fan,. if you feel like complaining go pay a couple thousand for the Quiet Cool.
