I Ordered the cool attic 30" direct drive fan on-line from HD for my 3400 sq ft split level and had it delivered to my local store.
The fan arrived 2 days early, however the box was damaged and a repair was attempted with clear packing tape.
I Opened the package at home and found that the two electrical switches that come with the fan were missing their screws to mount to the outlet box and both switches were bouncing around inside the box and were not packed as you would expect,
The louvers had 3 globs of white paint approx 1/2" each in diameter that someone in "quality control" had apparently applied to cover 3 scratches that had occurred at the factory.
As reported by others, all the screws were loose and had to be tightened. The whole fan was put together rather sloppily at the factory but with some modification I got it to where it would work.
I contacted HD about the louvers who in turn contacted Cool attic who in turn sent me a new louver assembly. This package was also damaged and three of the individual louvers were bent. Instead of calling to complain, I took 3 good louvers off the original louvers and replaced the three that were bent and made one that looked and functioned ok. The louvers are made from very thin metal and bent quite easily,
On a positive note the fan moves a lot of air and does what it is supposed to do. It is loud, but not as loud as I feared based on other reviews. Overall the fan is pretty cheaply made and the quality isn't there, but it does move a lot of cool outside air into the home at an affordable price.

I feel so strongly about this product that I am posting an update to my original review dated July 2014.
The fan lasted just over one summer, quitting mid-August 2015. My original review is a bit lengthy but the bottom line was that I was not satisfied with the fan as a whole. One of the positive aspects, one might think, is that the fan comes with a 10 year warranty so other than the fan not working during the season it is most needed and all the effort to remove the faulty motor and ship back to the factory at our cost, at least I would receive a new motor. I decided to stay out of the 140 degree plus attic and instead, removed the incredibly flimsy louvers and work through the ceiling opening. The removal of the motor was awkward but accomplished without too much hassle. Afraid of damaging the flimsy louvers, I covered the opening with the much heavier louvers from my previous fan. Total time to ship back to the factory and receive a replacement motor was just over a month. The best part of that transaction was a note included with the “new” motor informing me that since I had the audacity (my word) to actually invoke the warranty, the “new” motor only had a 1 year warranty – so, poof, just like that the 10 year warranty was reduced to approximately 2 years and some change.
I was not able to install the new motor until the beginning of May, 2016. Installation went fine without any major issues. However, trying to install the unbelievably paper thin louvers resulted in a bent center section, 3 bent louvers, and probably a few months off my life. Just to add salt to the wound, this motor doesn’t open these louvers all the way.
Conclusion: This was and is a horrible piece of junk – cheaply made all around and no way worth the price being asked. We’ll be lucky if this install lasts over a year. Forewarned is forearmed… Do yourself a huge favor and look at some other manufacturer.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by GetAKitty Worthwhile Investment But Be Prepared For the Installation
I bought this solely to reduce my overall A/C expense. The box it comes in a very large to accommodate the protective packing and I was concerned if I was going to be able to get it into my car but it did fit. After unpacking the fan, there was a small den in the area surrounding the fan blade but that did not impact the operation. Now, finding someone to install it was a different matter. Most bids were for $600 on up. My neighbor, who happens to be an electrician, offered to do it for $20 per hour and it too him and his father 9 hours to install from start to finish. Some of that time included having to stop to go to HD twice for needed parts, such as wood to create the frame and then the electrical wire. The moment we turned it on for the first time, everything ran perfectly. He did mention that the motor housing that drives the fan was built in a way that made it difficult to run the wires into it. Also, investing in some weather stripping to lay down on the area where the fan will rest and be mounted to. This not only helps make a seal around the fan's frame but reduces vibration and noise. The fan is surprisingly quiet on HIGH mode.
I don't see a big difference between the LOW and HIGH setting so I am keeping it on high. It reduce the temperature of the 2nd floor of my house from 80 to 72 in a couple of hours, versus running the A/C. Make sure you have plenty of vents in your attic to exhaust the air being pulled into it or the motor will shut down as a safety feature. That isn't the case with me since we have 8 vents but I thought it was worth mentioning. So far, I am very happy with the purchase.

I grew up with whole house fans in CA, and put some in my own homes as well....after moving to TX, I could not wait to put in another. The fan arrived ahead of schedule at the store, and everything was intact...no damage. The directions were easy to follow, and after installing the enclosed switch in the hallway, ta-daaaaaa...new whole house fan that works great !! Last nights, it was a cool, crisp 65 in the house after leaving it on overnight. Does not seem as loud as previously owned ones...I will look into adding stops for the louvers (see previous review), since one side doesn't want to close all the time.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by rmslk A good product at a decent price.
The fan was pretty easy to install, though I've installed one in the past in my other home; be sure to follow the instructions as to how the fan is oriented in relation to the ceiling joist and the length of the cutout (the hole is not square). The power with this motor seems weaker than the one at my other house, but maybe the difference is that this one is a 30" fan and the other is a 24". The fan is not especially noisy nor quiet; all fans seem to be about the same.

Product is great! The shutter is a little lower quality and sticks in the open position. Overall I'm very happy with the product. Easy to install and cools my house in less than an hour.
