The bottom of the shade has two bungee cord fasteners to keep it secure in the wind. Wind was the main reason I bought mine and it works great, but in a hurricane I would suggest rolling it up.

Using bungee cords for anchoring the bottom w/ mild tension, repeats, mild tension (keep them from blowing around in the breezes). Raises (retracts) them in breezes in excess of 10mph +/-. You'll know when to.

Answer:
No, the bottom is not weighted. It is a pole with plastic end caps where you can attach the mini bungie cords (provided with the kit) to. To secure them in place, you screw in the ports to the floor or the railing (wherever you would want to secure it) to hold it in place. It would have been nice to be given two sets of these ports, one for the floor and one for the railing.

Answer:
My shade came with tie downs, which can be attached anywhere along the project path of the shade (as high or as low as you want). It is very easy to attach the shade to the tie downs, which keeps the shade taut and prevents it from blowing in the wind. Use of the tie downs is optional, but they do work very well.

The Walnut shade has our new bungee system on the bottom to tie it down with but in heavier winds we recommend you roll it up.

I doubt the shade will be totally effective at blocking rain. Firstly, the fabric is a narrow weave polypropylene and is semi-porous. That's one of the reasons it's so light. Secondly, if used as intended as a roller blind, wind is likely to blow the blind out of the way permitting rain to soak your furniture. Answer:
It will definitely help keep the porch dry during lighter rains and perhaps heavy rains with no wind. I wouldn't say it will waterproof your porch, but it will certainly help, especially if it's pulled down all of the way. Once wet, it seems to dry pretty quickly in the sun.

Answer:
My bet would be you can't see through from either direction, although looking in it might be possible to see shapes and shadows. The shade is a rough woven polyester and the edges are not accurately bound or sewn. I would not use it inside personally. HD sells other interior roller shades that would stand up to close scrutiny better.

Answer:
Width cannot be altered. You have to buy the appropriate width.
The height could be cut to fit. However, the base is sewn in a loop to hold the stiffening bar. Sewing a new loop would probably require an industrial strength sewing machine. Also, there is a risk that the polypropylene fiber weave would unravel.
I would advise against cutting this product.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Shade Relief Easy to install. All you really need is a friend to hold the other end when installing the shade. July 13, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good purchase After an ordering nightmare through the HD website, which involves my own stupidity, we got our Coolaroo shades. They were recommended to us by neighbors a block away. They were fairly easy to install (thanks to help from a friend so my husband wasn't alone in this venture). We keep them rolled down during the summer as our house gets sun on that one side (over 26 ft.) most of the day. My husband tells me that he's noticed a big difference in the temperature in our "office." Not as hot as prior to the installation. I was slightly disappointed in that the material on the shades seemed a bit flimsy to me. I guess time will tell as to how well they hold up. August 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very satisfied This is a really nice product. I purchased the 120 inch which is a very wide area to cover, so it does tend to bend in the middle area but not enough to worry about. Just no support there. Over all I am very happy with the purchase and especially like the wind supports at the bottom. Nice shade for my car. Be careful measuring, include the brackets, I didn't so we had to improvise a bit for fit. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best shade for the hot Florida sun. This shade is the perfect solution for our windows. I needed a shade that would enable me to put my monitors in front of the windows. The sun is unbelievably bright. This shade did the trick. Easy to install, good quality fabric, and mechanically perfect. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great exterior roller shade I really love this roller shade. It is easy to install and it is easy to raise and lower with the revolving handle that hangs down so even a short person can raise and lower the shade. It provides privacy on our deck and looks very nice. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great shade for deck Perfect option for blocking morning and afternoon sun on our deck. Also works to give privacy from neighbors. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks Fantastic! I bought this 120X96 this morning from HD in Denham. Couldn't wait to get it home, especially after reading mixed reviews my porch has a 12' opening where the steps come up so I centered it there I hung it from the top opening by myself, which was a little tricky. I made a temporary sling about 3/4 of the way from one end to hold the shade while I attached it at the other end. They must've upgraded the hand crank because a couple reviews said tgeres was plastic. This one is metal. I attached the bungies to my porch floor. Works great & keeps 95% of the sun off my porch. I used drywall screws to attach the top brackets instead of the ones furnished. I'm a 53 Y/O woman & if I can hang this, y'all can too. March 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love my Coolaroo Shade"s" I bought one shade last summer and loved it so much I bought 2 more this year to finish off the patio. I used hollow wall anchors to secure the hardware to the patio ceiling and so far they are holding up well. To combat the wind I used "Vortex Steel Folding Ring Spiral Ground Anchors" and bungee cords. My only complaint is the shade may roll up crooked and get creased. As you can see in the furthest shade but it's not worth taking a star away. April 14, 2016
