Product Overview

Corroseal Rust Converter is an elite, industrial strength product for all marine, household, automotive, and industrial rust problems. Rust occurs naturally when the iron in steel oxidizes and returns to its original state, iron oxide. Through an innovative chemical conversion process, Corroseal Rust Converter converts rust (iron oxide) into a stable substance, magnetite. It also primes the surface with a high quality latex metal primer at the same time. Corroseal truly provides one step corrosion control. Corroseal features, water based rust converter with high quality latex metal primer, non-flammable, non-corrosive, easy to apply (brush, roll, or spray), easy to cleanup with soap and water. Eco-friendly alternative to sandblasting Corroseal is the best way to deal with rust because it is less expensive, less time consuming and is much more environmentally friendly than sandblasting. Corroseal eliminates the need to sandblast rust by chemically converting rust from iron oxide to magnetite, a black and inert substance. Don't remove rust, convert rust.

Customer Questions & Answers

how long does it take to dry ? how many coats to complete a rusty spot?

Asked by: Tim
It will dry usually within 24 hours. One coat as directed usually takes care of the conversion, if the rust spot was prepped correctly.

Can I paint over old paint ?

I have an iron fence that is not totally rusted. Can I still used this product over the whole fence including the old paint without having to remove it?
Asked by: Dollyg
I had some areas of my metal lawn furniture that I lightly sanded and smoothed the original paint and did other areas down to the metal to get rid of most rust. This product covered both type of areas perfectly.

Can Rustoleum undercoat be used over this product

Somewhere on the Corroseal (water based rust converter) website it says that you can use an oil based primer over the Corroseal. So this should work? Thanks
Asked by: zenith10
I used this product on sanded metal furniture as a primer and used RUSTOLIUM Enamel White as the final paint. Worked smooth on my project.

Will this stuff work on galvinized metal? i have heard this kind of product does not bond to it.

Asked by: kmag
Product interacts with iron oxide. Consult manufacturers website and test on small area, should not be an issue if you are ok with black coloring...

I used to dread about seeing rust on everything from tools to equipment to electrical, now when i see a speck of rust immediately use Corroseal and its gone. I love this product its such a relieve i can fight back rust and stop it from ruining my belongings. I used it mainly undercarriage of my 38' Motorhome and i have such a piece of mind now that rust is not eating out the frame anymore. In Florida with the humid weather, rust is unforgiving. Thank you Home depot for making my life easier!

This was my first time using Corroseal and used it to cleanup rust on 28ft rv trailer frame/suspension. Applied with a 3.5 inch normal paint brush and used 2/5 gallon to cover the entire frame/suspension. Need to apply consistent thick coat so don't put on too thin. Goes on as white film so I just made sure the white film consistently covered the part I was painting. Can apply more product to more rusted areas by recoating while first coat is still white and wet. Product dries as a black coat with a shiny finish. Cleans up with soap and water. Be sure to wear paint clothing and disposable gloves over exposed skin as the product is hard to remove from skin once it dries. Summary - easy to use and worked exceptionally well. Exceeded my expectations.

While this product is easy to apply and pretty forgiving as to the cleanliness of the parts, it still does not completely turn all of the rust to magnetite. One can still see some of the oxide red through the applied coats. I have yet to test the durability of the paint. Also, it is difficult to spray on (it is thick and cannot be thinned, so it sprays thickly), and brushing it will leave a brushed look to the paint. If this is okay in your application it does coat well, and does dry fairly clear. Clean-up is fairly easy if still liquid, but not with water if any is dried even a little, a smooth plastic container works best, as the dried material will flake off in water. I would definitely recommend it, as there is nothing out there that even comes close to it's quality or function/purpose.

Even when I just touched a rusty nut on our snowblower it immediately turned silver. I had an incident that someone placed 3 separate rags soaked with whatever and placed in our driveway so the snowblower would pick them up. The snowblower started to rust more than it already was and some of the paint came off in liquid form and was dripping. Also something very sticky was on the front blades. I washed it up good with a heavy-duty cleaner and sanded the sticky stuff off that became very hard. Then I washed it all over again with a good cleaner and then used a pressure nozzle at the end of a hose. I then painted the Corroseal on it and left it get black. I painted it after that with John Deere paint that it deserves and it looks great! It took me approximately 5 days to complete this but I'm glad I did.

Next to media blasting, I know of now other product that eliminates small amounts of rust. Follow the directions and you should be happy too. I used 1200 psi pencil-jet water blaster to clean off old paint and knock off the bulky rust. Only thing is, I treated 7 pieces of patio furniture with about a quart, so my purchase of 1 gallon was definitely overkill, especially at that price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used it on the frame of my 1976 Dodge truck... Used it on the frame of my 1976 Dodge truck I'm restoring. I first used a wire brush on my cordless drill to clean up the flaking loose rust along the frame rails. It's a latex based product that has the consistency of watered down Elmers glue. And the instructions say that it should be applied a little bit on the thick side, but once you brush this stuff on it only takes about 10-15 min before the rusted areas turn a solid black color and the surface has a very smooth appearance and texture. It has almost no odor to it and once it dried completely I was able to paint over it with a heavy duty frame paint. I am very impressed with this product. It didn't even take a whole gallon to do the underside of the body, in addition to the frame rails and cross members. I had some left over so I redid the legs on my picnic table and a rusty old wrought iron patio set we had in the barn. This stuff seems to work as advertised and I would definitely use it again.

Went on as advertised, seemed to seal the rust and turn it black. Applied paint over it 24 hours later, no problem. Only the test of time will tell how good it really is. I will buy more as necessary. Not sure why Home Depot doesn`t keep it in stock a bit closer, though.
