Answer:
The advertising of this product is misleading it shows a picture of the ladder set as scaffolding and says max 8ft. When you set this up as scaffolding the two ladders are only about 3 ft high.

A step ladder is a free standing ladder. One person answer to this question is 17 feet which has to be incorrect. That would be fully extended and leaning against a wall or against a building. IE a 'straight' ladder. Another answer is 85.63 inches (equals ~7.1 ft) . I take it that answer is correct since the 'step' ladder would be half the fully extended ('straight' ladder) height. Answer:
The term maximum reach would refer only to the ladder length fully extended in the straight position (not a step ladder which is half the fully extended length). This does NOT refer to a persons ability to physically 'reach' anything.

Answer:
Yes, it does. Actually this is exactly the reason why I purchased it. I needed to install a new light fixture on the ceiling of my stairwell. The ladder worked great by adjusting the two sides differently, to match the steps difference.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 74 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Most practical purchase ever My wife and I own a 35-year-old home in Reno, Nevada. Our ranch style home has vaulted ceilings, and cleaning the cobwebs from the ceiling has been nearly impossible. I have been looking for an adjustable ladder within our price range. The 17-foot adjustable ladder was perfect for our needs, and resulted in the first time I have effectively vacuumed the ceilings and removed the cobwebs to my wife's satisfaction. A "happy wife" is a "happy life" ... and this purchase was very practical and cost effective. Thank you. April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Quality Stable, solid, versatile and well built. I used it normally, on the stairs and at full length. I'm taking one start out since it has tricky locks at the pivot points. They work fine, but they are not like the other locks that you can visually tell if they are locked or not. Had I realized of that, I had probably favored the Werner ladder. All locks there are the same, easy to operate and their state is visually obvious. However, this ladder is still a good value and I recommend it, especially if you are not as picky as me. June 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by multi ladder I was looking for a ladder that could be used in many ways. Ext. / Step ladder in various heights. This ladder fits this needs fine. I needed a ladder that was rated 300 pounds since I am on the heaver side and 6'2". My only complaint is that the specifications on the ladder called for 3" treads, they are smaller but larger than other brands and appear to be strong. Another brand is lighter and I would have liked that weight better BUT the price was much more. May 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Versatile, Well-Designed/Constructed Ladder This is a quality built, multi-configurable, easy to use ladder; in fully extended mode however, it can be difficult for just one person to manipulate into place (only con though). May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Happy climber This is the best of the best multi task ladder a man could want, Or even a woman. great product! April 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great and safe ladder at a very reasonable price Ladder can be handled by one person for many applications! Light weight makes it east to maneuver inside the house. Excellent purchase!! March 29, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great ladder, but heavier than comparable ladders made by competitors The ladder is a good quality for home use, but is rather heavy and bulky. For the price, it is a great ladder, but if you're wanting the best, I'd recommend paying more for a Little Giant, they're slightly better quality and lighter weight. I chose this ladder for the price, and am happy with what I got for the price. March 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Serves as 2 ladders in 1 Great multipurpose ladder. Convenient in how is can transform from an A-frame to a straight ladder almost like an extension ladder. March 15, 2016
