Answer:
I just spoke to Customer Service at Cree, they say that it can't be enclosed at all because air needs to circulate around the bottom of the bulb or it will get too hot and fail. So if you call in for a warranty replacement make sure you had the bulb in a fixture that was not even partially enclosed

I went ahead and bought 1/2 dozen of these. Just looked at the fine print on the package and say:
"Do not use in enclosed fixtures"
Then it list the operating temps and this might be why you can't use in a enclosed fixture:
"Suitable for use in operating environments between -13F and +113F

Not sure because of the fat base. You would just have to buy it and try it and then return it if it didn't fit. There is no way to tell.

Answer:
probably not. The bulb is too large to fit most standard porch fixtures. The opening to the globe or enclosure must be at least 3 inches wide. The globe or cover must fit a bulb 5 1/4 inches long.

I was advised that in general LED bulbs should be in an open fixture to avoid heat build up. However, it does not state specifically on the package that it cannot be used in an enclosed fixture. On the package it says:

No. 5000 to 5500k is considered pure white light or Daylight. This is a cool white bulb. I would think 3500 to maybe 4000k would be considered mid range color of pure white light

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 341 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Lasted under 1 year Bought 6 of these for our new home when we bought it last April. One burned out already, another flickers at random. That is a failure rate of 33%. Buy something else. February 27, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Light but wish they had high CRI version Using in single bulb ceiling lights, ceiling fan fixtures, and in standing torche lamps. Great light tone, easy on eyes. Can be a postitive or negetive depending on use light spreads perpendicular 360 with led inside shaded coated glass cover limiting light spread to top and bottom of bulb. Unfortionately appears Cree has discontinued much of their TW (True White) line, this bulb has a CRI of 80, their older 40 and 60 equivelents use to be available in TW also with a CRI of 93. Come on Cree ad a high watt equiv high CRI to your line up. NOTE: I do not recomend the 3-Way version of this 100 watt equiv, lasted 2 months, the Cree bulb failure I have had. January 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Only lasted 6 months It was very bright and lit up our garage very well but after six months it failed completely. April 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by No More Cree For Me Purchased several of these and after the first round of burnouts, I took them back to Home Depot who allowed me to exchange them there since they had only lasted a couple of weeks. After a couple more months these started flickering and burned out. PIcture shows only half the LED's lighting up before burning out. Cree offers a 10 yr warranty, but too many stipulations to make it worthwhile paying to send back. I ended up buying another brand of LED lights at a fraction of the cost and haven't had any issues. I will be staying away from the Cree products from now on. January 31, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by One by one they are burning out, lasting under 1 year We built a new home last fall and installed these bulbs everywhere. The 75 & 100watt equivalent ones are the most costly and are failing one by one. I would never buy these again, started to replace them as needed with different brand. June 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worst bulb ever and costly these bulbs suck I have had five of them I no longer have any they last a couple of months June 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best LED Yet The 5000k really lights up an area. Put one in my drop light and now no more broken filaments when I bump the light. Hope the price keeps going down. June 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Lasted three months Picked this bulb because they were out of the good ones And it failed quickly. Lots of failures documented online as well. Avoid Cree bulbs. June 14, 2016
