Is there a Cree bulb that can be used in a closed fixture?

Is there a Cree bulb that can be used in a closed fixture?
Asked by: Ann
My usages in not full enclosed, a ceiling fan with a globe so it does trap some heat. I think this is why the Ecosmart brand units failed so quickly their base gets to hot to touch but the Cree brand runs cooler. For enclosed fixtures that do not have plenty of room to displace heat be careful what LED type you try. The electronics that drive the LED and the LED heat sink are in the base of the lamps and must have a way to displace this heat or they will fail. Cheap poorly made LED replacement will even melt as I experienced so be smart buy the correctly rated unit for your fixture, this goes for any type of lamp not just LED replacements. Go to the lamp manufactures web site and verify your usage to be safe.

Cree brand LEDs are great, I originally tried the Ecosmart candelabra base LED lamps for out two new ceiling fans purchased from Home Depot because it was the only candelabra available but they failed very quickly one the first day. On the return of the second batch of Ecosmart Home Depot had the Cree brand LED units in stock. I have always had great results with the Cree brand and purchased a total of 8 Cree LED lamps. They have performed great no failures and run cooler than the Ecosmart units. Works well with a standard electronic dimmer. Very pleased with the Cree brand of products and highly recommend them they are worth the few extra dollars.

I bought a couple of 2-packs to replace the fluorescents in my front door lights. These look so much better and don't have that annoying warmup period of the CFLs. The store had a great display so you could compare these to a couple of other brands and see the dimming effect. I don't care about dimming for this location, but they looked better overall than the others to my eye. We have some non-candlelight dimming bulbs in another location, and my wife complains about the color when they are set low. These would solve that problem perfectly. I highly recommend them.

Best LED Choice for Exposed Fixtures The candlelight dimming feature definitely works - other candelabra led bulbs (such as GE, Philips, Feit, and even the older Cree bulbs) seem to turn more whitish when you dim them, making them not great choices for exposed bulb light fixtures. These glow a bit warmer as you dim them, making them seem more like incandescents. They are different than incandescents (perhaps better to some) in that the light fills the bulb more thoroughly. The one negative I found to the design is that the heat sink forms the base, which means not as much light is cast directly below the bulb, which may not be ideal for some fixtures. The base is also large, so does not look as elegant in the fixture. If Cree could come up with a way to do the Candlelight dimming using a LED Filament style bulb, they'd have the ultimate winner.

These are actually nicer than the original "flame style" bulbs that we had been using for years. They provide really bright light for only 5 watts of power compared to the 40 watts of the old bulbs. Now we don't feel bad leaving the light on longer. Don't have a dimmer on the chandelier so can't comment on dimmability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These LED lights are awesome. Cree did a great job making them not look like LED bulbs. I'm a hug... These LED lights are awesome. Cree did a great job making them not look like LED bulbs. I'm a huge fan of LED bulbs (almost every bulb in my house is a LED) but sometimes a light fixture needs that old time feel that most LEDs fail at. These replaced halogen bulbs that were in 2 pendent lights on either side of my master bed. I tried a few other LED bulbs, they were all too white and even though they said they could dim they would flicker and buzz when dimmed (on my LED dimmer switch). These bulbs not only dim very nicely, they are made to get more orange/yellow as they dim giving you the warmth of a halogen or Edison bulb. Additionally, the way the shaped the inside of the bulb like a cone makes them look more like a flame then a boring bulb. I fully recommend them if you want a dimmable light that has the warmth of an Edison bulb. If you want the clean white light of a typical LED then these are not what you want. I plan on adding a picture when I get home from work.
