Answer:
I wouldn't try it , because the teeth on the handle which normally grip into a pipe would screw up your pulley , which in turn could wear out your fan belt at the worst possible moment You would be better off trying a cloth strap wrench . Or you could take a pipe wrench open it up just wide enough to put the movable jaw into the opening in the front of the pulley so it looks like you are gripping a pipe Read More

Or you could take a pipe wrench open it up just wide enough to put the movable jaw into the opening in the front of the pulley so it looks like you are gripping a pipe , but in reality you would be gripping the pulley and if you use a long enough pipe wrench so it touches the ground , that should hold the crank from turning so you could remove the bolt. The jaws of the wrench would facing toward the back of the engine You also could try using a 6 point socket and a long breaker bar and give it a quick and hard jerk which may loosen the bolt . Answer:
Yes......as long as you wrap a section of old belt around pulley to protect the pulley. I've used this method several times.

Answer:
L34o6, While this tool may work in a pinch, there are better tools designed especially to remove crankshaft pulleys. The chain on this chain wench will bite into the surface of the pipe it engages and can mar the surface. In most applications on pipe this is not an issue, but you would not want to damage the crankshaft pulley if you planned on reusing it as it could damage the serpentine belt.

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JUST WHAT I NEEDED Removing and replacing a pipe in a TIGHT space was the reason for my choice to buy this tool. Couldn't get on the pipe with a pipe wrench , so I bought this chain wrench, which should do the job very nicely. Well constructed. March 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 24 inch Wrench works good. No complaints. Will need another one for my other vehicle. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A must have tool. I used the chain wrench tool to hold the harmonic balancer pulley on a pick-up truck engine. Also, used the chain wrench to hold the new pulley while tightening it to 105 ft/lbs with a torque wrench. Tried the rubber strap wrench, actually two of them at once but they did not work. Also, Home Depot had the best price as I checked other sources which were higher in price. July 22, 2015
