Customer Questions & Answers

How fine are the chips from a Cub Cadet 2 in. 208 cc 2-in-1 Upright Chipper Shredder ?

I want to use the shredder along with a stove pellet maker to make stove pellets from my yard trimmings and the abundance of tumble weeds in our area. Does this machine make fine enough chips?
Asked by: Anonymous
About the same as the sawdust made by a chainsaw. Pretty fine - could be used for composting but not for mulch in my opinion - too fine for that.

How much does this unit weigh? Two reviews contradict whether one needs a lawn tractor to move this unit. Can it be pulled by hand across the ground

Asked by: Anonymous
The unit ways about 200lbs and you can move it by hand, but I do move it by lawn tractor.

How big a branch will this chip and would it come out usable for garden mulch?

Asked by: Anonymous
2" branch, but it can't have any side branches coming out of the branch or you won't be able to feed it in. It makes very small chips, just about the size of sawdust created by a chain saw. It could easily go into the soil as long as you don't put too much into the soil of course.

How can this be moved ? Tilt forward or backyard.Up a hill??

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes - you can pull it by hand. If you do, the only thing to watch is that your gas tank isn't too overfilled or else the gasoline will spill out as you tip it to move it.

2 in. 208 cc Gas 2-in-1 Upright Chipper Shredder is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing is a BEAST! If you need one, this is the one you want. I went to Home Depot and looked at the Cub Cadet.I didn't pull the trigger until I read the complaints about the Chinese models that break and can't order parts for. Living in a rural area, I don't have time to constantly repair all the equipment I use, so I always try to buy reliability. The cast sleeve motor w/overhead valves runs substantially quieter than my old chipper. It also started on the first pull! When you put the 2" branch in the chute, the blade design coupled with the sharpness actually pulls the branch into the machine. The manual says hold on tightly to the branch, but trust me, you want a soft grip, otherwise it will pull it out of your hand. The tow bar attachment is great if you have something to tow it with, but it should hinge down instead of being fixed position because it makes it an effort to get around it to load the chipper chute. The wheels could be bigger. The shredder hopper curves into the shredder face, and try as I may, I could not choke this thing. It eats sticks and leaves effortlessly. Half inch branches handled with ease as well. I ran it for about 90 minutes and still had a quarter tank left, so it gets good economy. Parts and service available at my local tractor supply. I'll write more in a month, I should have about 40 hours on it by then.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I ever owned I've owned several chipper/shredders and this is by far the best of the lot. Lots of power. It gobbles leaves, wet or dry about as fast as you can feed them in. It is also very economical on fuel. I can run it about 6 hours on 2 tanks, which is a gallon and a half total. I sold my other chippers after using this one a few days. Great buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best chipper I've found for the money Once I had in my possession one that was stored indoors (do NOT take one home that was stored outside...the hopper acts like a rain catcher, and collects water right where all of the business gets done) I was very happy. The engine is strong (mine came with a Briggs and Stratton rather than the advertised Cub Cadet) and I only stalled it once. For limbs close to the 2-inch diameter, I would keep them under four-feet long to prevent stalling. Other than that, it sucked everything in and gobbled it up, creating a nice fine mulch. The only problem I have is the hopper is a little too easy to clog (I got to the point where I stopped putting sticks in there altogether and just fed it leaves) and the chute is located too close to the ground for my taste. My back is not so good and it wore on me after a while. Also, because of the two-inch maximum diameter of the chute, you are limited as to what you can feed it, unless you want to take the time and split everything into smaller pieces. Also, the bag is cumbersome and difficult to empty when full. I only live on a third acre in a residential neighborhood, but if you live in a wooded area or on a larger lot where you would be using it more than I wil, i would recommend spending a few more hundred dollars and getting one with a minumum three-inch capacity chute

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price on a solid machne My chipper arrived fully assembled, all I had to do was put air in the tires, oil (supplied) and gas in the engine, and attach the tow bar and it was ready for work. I've got six hours on the machine now and I've found it to be powerful enough to handle the Redbud, Oak, Poplar, and Pine branches and brush that I've been piling up all summer in anticipation of this purcahse. Twigs can conspire to clog the shredder chute, but I keep one sturdy stick handy to prod them into the whirling blades of destruction and all goes well again. It produces great mulch! Home Depot definately has the best price on this machine. Most others were $800 or above.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great to manage <2" limbs and small branches & leaves I ordered the cub cadet chipper/shredder online and had it delivered to the store (no shipping charge). I received the unit in good shape. However, as I removed the taped plastic bag holding the instruction booklets and exit bag from the inside of the hopper, I heard something metallic fall into the hopper. I noticed a hole in the bottom of the plastic bag. After a call to cub cadet tech support, I decided to try and remove the hopper from the unit (not easy since the nuts holding the hopper to a square support piece, could fall into the hopper.) I got the hopper off and found two pin bolts ( 2" x 1/2" and 3.5"x3/8") that had fallen into the flail blade unit that shreds items thrown in the hopper. I was able to get the bolts removed, the hopper reattached and then prepped the unit for use with oil and gas. These bolts were not ones used with this chipper/shredder. I reported this to cub cadet, but have not received any response to the complaint in over a week. The chipper/shredder worked great for branches up to 2" for downed limbs in my yard and my neighbors yard that had been saved up for a couple of months. Be careful chipping larger branches too quickly as this could bog down the motor.. let it chip a few inches at a time. (SAFETY TIP)Make sure you cover the hopper and chipper openings with something that will not allow items to fall into it. If you have family that could accidently throw something into the hopper, it could cause damage to the unit or you when you power it up the next time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Depends on what you're doing This product is very well-constructed and is delivered very securely packaged. the main issue is that to chip actual branches (not twigs), all side branches must be completely removed or else the branch won't feed into the chipper feed input. So you have to manicure each and every branch before you can feed it in. It will certainly chip up a 2" branch, but you can't feed it in unless you cut off all side branches. I suppose that is because this thing has been lawyered over until it is basically idiot-proof as far as accidents are concerned (input feed is just about 2" wide).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tool for the price A little tough in the beginning no user manual was shipped but customer support emailed me one. After filling with oil and gas the operation was simple. Three pulls of the recoil and I was shredding. The chute clogs whenever you are shredding green brush and leaves but is easy to clear. Shutdown operation would be easier and safer with a switch shut off instead of holding the throttle back.
