Customer Questions & Answers

can I split logs 2 to 3 feet in diameter and 12 to 15 inches long?

Asked by: spider
Yes, you can. You will do it in vertical machine position. I have done 3 ft dia trunks too. My fire wood length is 18-20 inches. Machine takes it without problem. I would offer advise from my experience when splitting large diameter in vertical: because top of the small metal "platform" of splitter is about 1 inch above the ground, I am keeping on the ground piece of 1 inch thick board and I roll my big log over it. It helps to keep the log close to the vertical beam, thus you can chop off larger piece. Large diameter logs I keep turning around chopping off piece after the piece.

Does the metal shroud around the splitting wedge come down with the wedge or is that stationary so you cant put too big of a log?

yellow sheet metal shroud
Asked by: Anonymous
the wedge is supported with the mount assembly that slides up and down the I beam. It travels with the wedge.

It was the least expensive splitter available with 25 ton, filled with hydraulic fluid, a Honda motor and free shipping. I've split about three cord of seasoned pine without issue. Motor starts with a light pull, first time every time. The ram splits through 25-30" rounds like butter. It is everything that was advertised and more. Truly a great purchase. Shipping to the store was great. The splitter arrived three days early.

It is advertised as being shipped from the factory filled with hydraulic fluid and ready to go. The startup section of the owners manual says to cycle the ram 12 times and then check, and add fluid, because now the whole system is primed. It also says not to mix different brands of fluid. I need to add a quart or 2 and I can only find the hydraulic fluid I need in 5 gallon quantities. Cub Cadet customer service pretty much told me to disregard the owners manual and just mix different brands. They "assured" me this would not void my warranty yet the customer service rep wouldnt give me his full name. very disappointed by what is supposed to be a reputable brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 100% Satisfied My husband is 71 yrs. old. Has been struggling with a home made 12 ton splitter for the past 20 years. It finally kicked the bucket. I just bought him this 25 ton Cub Cadet. He was hopeful, but skeptical. He got it together with little problem, gassed it up, It started on the first pull. He sat on a lawn chair to do the splitting, while I fed him the wood. After the first 3 gnarly, knotty pieces split like a knife thru warm butter, he got a grin on his face that never left. I could see him mouth "Unbelievable!" "Fantastic!" We split our whole stack in no time. When we were done for the day, he bent over and kissed his new splitter! Cant give a better recommendation than that!

Ordering was fast and splitter was in store for pickup in just a couple of days. There was no problem assembling the splitter and the Honda motor fired up almost first pull. But there was some problems with the hydraulic hoses. Apparently no one at the factory believes in using thread sealant (pipe dope) on the hoses as calls for in the instructions. Immediately upon actuating the ram, fluid started leaking from a hose fitting. I tried to just tighten the fitting, but that didn't help as the fitting itself felt like it was bottomed out. Upon taking the fitting off, it appeared that there was an undersized O-ring that was suppose to seal the connection. I doped the threads and reassembled the hose and appeared to have stopped that leak. I had a pile of seasoned red oak that I started splitting and at this time it started leaking from another connection. Overall, I am well pleased with the splitter. I handled everything I put through it and I would give it five stars if it weren't for the fact that I have to go back behind the factory (MTD) and fix things that shouldn't have been a problem to begin with. I don't know if this was an isolated incident or whether it's a common occurrence, but it is something that could be easily resolved by management.

I use this as a "secondary" splitter to generate firewood sized logs after my Bobcat mounted splitter has lifted and split 4 - 5 ft diameter founds into 2-3 foot rounds as its not cost effective to use the Bobcat to split down to firewood size. Only reason I did not give it five stars is the hydraulic oil used at the factory and recommended is not commonly available - and the factory does not recommend mixing when you top off the hydraulic fluid. I've been through this with a Genie lift and find it extremely annoying..

Took longer to uncrate than assemble: about 35 minutes total and needed a 1/2" and 9/16" wrench.Oil levels were good.Honda motor started with 2 pulls. While in shop I split an 18" 4x4 (aged oak) and it never even slowed. Will split larger wood this weekend. Not surprised that it's made in China and even with that I would recommend. With a low trailer it's a 1 man job to uncrate, assemble, and ease off of trailer. If it's in a pick up bed you'll need 3 men to get it out of bed after you remove upper crating. Others offer cheaper units but after reading their reviews(particularly about no customer service) I went with the Cub Cadet and Home Depot. A few hundred extra and better service is worth it to me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice upgrade from my electric splitter I would have given 5 stars but unhappy with tires on splitter. I had hoped to be able to pull behind my truck, but tires are only rated for 45 mph. Alot of money to spend, and cant really transport it on highway. The splitter itself is wonderful! Very easy to start and cuts through 20" cherry with ease! Assembly was easy also. Have split almost 2 cords in just over a week already.

It has performed very well and has not found a piece of wood that it can not split. Every once in awhile it will make a funny noise, but it goes away within a few minutes. A tank of gas has been lasting between 45 minutes and an hour, so fuel economy is not a problem. I am very happy with my purchase.
