Decrated the product, installed the tow bar, moved the cylinder into position, filled the tires with air, checked the level of hydraulic fluid, filled engine oil, added gasoline. It was about a one hour setup. One pull on the starter rope and it started right up. Split a bunch of oak and never bogged down the splitter. Very happy with this product!

one tough puppy...wood splits just looking at it. I've split about two cords so far, all in the vertical position, very easy to use, no hesitation, or need to charge or recharge. btw, the wood has all been elm and hickory

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Woody Thankful for previous reviews
I shopped for about two months for a new splitter and looked at 6-8 units within the 25-30 ton range. After reading the positive reviews of this unit, it seemed to have most of what I was looking for. I just finished splitting 8 cords which is my annual usage. I block logs in 24" length from diameters as much as 30". Between the 27 ton ram and the huge engine, the splitter had no trouble with any log in either the horizontal or vertical positions. Only a couple of gripes; As in other reviews, the log catching brackets are not made stout enough and will bend easily. Split pieces will easily roll off the wimpy brackets and end up bending the wheel fenders. In addition, there needs to be a simple guard over the gas tank area. Very often, a semi-split piece will get pulled back with the retreating ram and end up scraping over top of the tank. As a result, the plastic vent tube broke off within the first 30 minutes of use. I plan to make major modifications to both catch brackets and design a gas tank guard during the off-season. If you intend to buy one of these, just plan on getting those modifications done. Overall, it's a very good splitter and I like ALMOST all of the design features. Very impressed with Cub Cadet quality.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Oldfarmer89 Very good splitter
Purchased this splitter in March 2014. After heavy use last winter i can honestly attest to the high quality of the machine. We split a lot of oak and the splitter hardly ever strains. We have been able to split enough wood to heat our home and that of my elderly parents. No way I could have done this by hand! Always starts easily on the 1st or 2nd pull. Many folks have reservations about the chinese engine but so far it has worked like a charm. Easy to move. Usually tow it with my riding mower. Only negative, which others have mentioned, are the "log catchers." Mine have not bent, BUT, the bolts holding them on are of very poor quality. All have broken off by this point, usually even with the frame which necessitates drilling them out. I have replaced them with better quality bolts from a local nut/bolt store. Would suggest that new users go ahead replace the bolts before using the machine to avoid having to drill them out later. Plan on splitting the first load of the year this weekend, a task i no longer dread due to this machine.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by NWTerritoryEng Robust design delivers as advertised.
We chose to purchase from a dealer rather than a box store. It was all setup with fluids ready. I like simple, robust, elegant products with good quality and this seems to fit. Local service is a plus, though I hope I never need to use it. Used it to split elm right away and it was amazing. After 25 years of splitting with a maul (mostly maple/oak) I'm not getting any younger and with kids grown up and away time is a factor. It did great. Now I actually want to go out to my woods and get more wood cut so I can use it again.

This splitter is pretty powerful. It's not the fastest splitter I have used, but it starts in one or two pulls, even in the cold, and it can crank for hours and just hums along splitting all you can throw at it. It's lighter than our old custom made splitter, which makes moving it to the cut site a breeze on the 4WD tractor.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by OleGuy Good solid well made machine and Lots of POWER!
Had some 3 year old hedge and oak saved up for machine, and took splitter directly to wood pile when I got it home. I let the engine warm for a few minutes and ran throttle just below 1/2 opening and it split logs with no effeort. The engine stayed at constant RPM and splitter worked very smoothly and has plenty of power. The hedge I split had knots and was 1 to 2 foot dia. pieces. I have been an automechanic for over 45 years and there is nothing I would change about the design or operation of this machine, and I usually am able to find something that should have been designed differently either for safety reasons or to make operation of machine easier. Glad I purchased this machine.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Woodheatrules Should have purchased years ago
After years of swinging the old 8.5# splitting maul, I wound up with nerve damage in my arm and needed another way to provide wood to heat out home. 2 months of research, narrowed down the list to the cub cadet or the ariens 27 ton model. I usually have red and white oak, locust, and maple rounds and decided that the 277cc engine with the metal diamond plate wheel fenders this cub cadet seemed to be the most bang for the buck. Well a few weeks after I ordered she showed up was easy to un-crate, all the fluids were where the levels should be. Followed the easy to understand instructions and in 20 minutes had her assembled, the pump primed, added a gallon of premium gas and she fired on the 1st pull! Had a few red oak rounds the big stuff you keep pushing aside to split some other time slid the nastiest round she was 43" and 18" long with knots twists etc and put the machine vertical in just a few pulls of the lever I was hooked! My gosh this was effortless, short of moving the rounds to the machine. As the next 3 hours passed and a whopping gallon of gas consumed, I went through an entire cord of year old nasty oak! Checked all the fluids again all where they should be and slid her into the garage for next time. This baby is even easy to move around by hand in the driveway, and seems well balanced. I hope every time I use her in the future I'm as pleased as my first time. If you heat your home with wood and are in the market for a great splitter for a great price so far I feel the ls27 is the best bang for the buck! I'm actually looking forward to splitting the next round and can wake up the next day pain free for a change!!! I just wish I would have purchased this thing years ago!
