I have had this machine for about a month, and I have restarted it numerous times with no difficulty. If I stop the machine I simply start it again by putting the choke on, and putting the speed on fast. Then I simply pull the rope, and it starts every time I have done it. This is basically the same way I start it when it is cold. I am not sure why some others are having difficulty, unless the manufacturer has made some adjustments. One thing to note is that you should probably make sure the cutter is free of branches before you stop the machine. I am not sure if this is part of the issue, or not. It is just something to watch out for. Read Less

Answer:
i have found my machine impossible to restart after a shut down until I wait a while. Have not timed it so far. I run a tank of gas out and when it shuts down I am done for the day.
I worked out this routine due to the fact that I could not get it to start after shutting down.

Answer:
When the engine is warm it is almost impossible to restart the engine unless you wait about a half hour therefore delaying your work time. This Briggs and Stratton engine is terrible and not strong enough for this chipper.

Apparently the answer from cub cadet came from someone who has not actually used one. It is true that the engine will not start after shutdown, even if only run for a short period of time. My experience is that it needs to cool down for at least 20-30 minutes before it will re-start. It was my assumption that the engine was flooding on shut down when it coasted to a stop. I put an in-line fuel shut-off valve in the fuel line and closed the valve when i wanted to shut down. This was not a fix, as the unit was still hard to start after shut-down. Then i shut it down normally with the throttle and pulled the spark plug out. It was dry as a bone, so it's not flooding. I never even thought to choke the motor on a warm start as that goes against everything i have done in the past. Next time i run it i am going to try choking it like the other respondent suggested. I sure hope that works because this thing is a real pain in the arm to re-start. Read Less

Hello. If the engine is already warmed, it is not necassary to prime or choke the engine. The engine already has sufficient fuel to start. Thank you for your question.

I have had the same issue. Pull the cord a couple of times to clear the feeder first, then set the choke to full, throttle to 1/4. that seems to get mine to fire off.

Answer:
The one I ordered came with a tow bar, although I have not used it yet. For short moves the handle bars work good. For moving it further the tow bar is probably a good idea. A lawn tractor should do the job just fine. The unit also included goggles. I think they all come with these accessories.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 26 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Product and Delivery. This really seems to be a great chipper/ shredder. It is made of heavy grade sheet steel and looks very solid. It does what the manufacturer says it does, which is to chip wood up to three inches in diameter. This is the bulk of what we have at our place. Anything bigger we just stack. After cutting branches to chip you do need to cut off heavier branches near the stem, before feeding them into the machine. Then those can be chipped individually. This is where a chain saw is handy. It starts easily, even when it is warm. I have had no starting problems. I use the choke, put it on fast, pull the rope once, and it starts. All that said, this is not a toy. While I have seen some other chipper/shredders for a little less money they look rather small next to it. I think the Cub Cadet is probably needed, if you have more work to do. Here are a few things to watch out for. You have to fill the engine with oil they provide. It does not have oil in it when it arrives, so be sure to put the provided oil in the engine before starting it. The engine, also, has a gear reduction box. I was somewhat confused about whether this, also, needed oil. Apparently it is a sealed gear box with oil already in it. The instruction manual covers a number of engines and one model gear box needs to have oil added before use. This one does not, hence my confusion. As with anything new it pays to study the instructions thoroughly before doing something you might be sorry for later. For me, the engine manual was not always clear. Also, be sure to follow all safety rules, the same as any machine. Although you can walk it to location with the provided handle bar. the machine comes with a tow bar for towing behind a lawn tractor. It also comes with goggles, which you need. You will need to buy ear protection and gloves. This is a loud branch eater. It came on a trailer truck with a tail gate on the back of it. This is good, since it is a heavy machine. The driver unloaded it and even brought it up by our garage, which is not that close to the road at our place. I thought they would leave it at the curb. As a plus, it only cost about fifty five dollars for delivery. The packaging was heavy cardboard on a pallet. I totally recommend it. We can now use these downed branches as wood chips in our garden and flower beds. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Chops like crazy I read from reviews this engine is a hard pull to start- it is but so far I have only had to pull the starter cord about 1 1/2 feet and slowly comes to life and runs. Easiest starting equipment I have ever experienced. Putting the oil is ridiculous and they should really address this by just adding a dipstick with a tube. Chipper cut everything I threw in it including ~3 inch branches from an apple tree. Careful how you hold it; a lot of shock comes thru the wood (expected). Shredder, well, shreds. Attaching the bag is tedious and it fills fast, but I tried w/o and the chips went into the neighbors yard. Nice that the tow bar is included- competition asks for >$100 for a piece of square tubing with a couple of holes and a pin/ hair clip. I will see how it holds up this falls when the copious debris from my trees goes into it. May 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Machine This is great machine. very well package for shipping the Freight guy delivered it to the end of the driveway it came fully assembled after about an hour of reading the manual I added the oil, fuel and fired it up it started at the first try. I used it for about 30 minutes and the results are great no problem when my wife came home I fired it up to show her and it start it up once again in the first try. I have a big job this weekend and I'm glad I bought this unit. P.S. I love the tow bar great to tow around my property with my riding tractor. February 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid and Powerfull Chips 2" 20 foot long saplings without stalling. 3/4 throttle works fine for 1" to 1 1/2" so you don't have to run at "max" power very often. Only improvement would be larger tires to make rough ground transport more effective. May 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well worth the money This chipper definitely will handle anything that will fit in the chute even the hardest of woods. It does take some muscle to start it but that is normal for a fairly heavy duty machine. April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by dependable product The chipper is easy for me to start even with a bad back. For all of the reviews that say it is hard to start after shutting it down...just choke it each and every time you start it and you will find that it starts the first pull every time. I did a lot of research on chippers before my purchase. I am glad that I did not purchase a chipper rated for two inch branches as it would have probably only chipped 1 inch...as this one will not handle the 3 inch branches of any sort of hardwood and has trouble even with soft woods such as pine or poplar when the branches are 3 inches. It is very useful for 2" and below...just chewing them up instantly with little effort to feed the branches into the shoot. The shredder works great for leaves and tiny tiny branches. As usual with most products, you might as well just throw the instructions away before reading them. Overall I am quite pleased with the product so far as I have just learned to cut the 3" branches up with my saw for kindling...and believe that my opinion will remain the same as the machine seems to be quite dependable. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poorly built This item is poorly built. As you use it the screws come loose from the vibration and the blades actually fell out during used. Also the rivets on the side of the shoot pop when in use. March 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This unit does not work well With a large treed yard, I thought this chipper would quickly convert branches and other yard debris into mulch and chips. Quickly is not part of this units vocabulary! Small branches are meant to go into the hopper section. However there is a short radius bend just before the blades. Branches will not easily go around the sharp bend therefore not making contact with the blades. Very frustrating! Larger pieces, up to 3" diameter are meant to be inserted into the other side of the unit. You have to push the sticks very hard to make any progress with chipping. I was told that the unit would virtually suck the wood in so I would need to hold it back to prevent the motor from stalling due to overload. You actually need to push very hard. Just not worth the money! November 6, 2015
