Answer:
This product comes as a kit, only. If you are looking to replace a worn mulch plug, you will have an extra set of blades when the ones you are using need replaced! Be sure to use the mulching blades when the mulching plug is installed.

I have heard that you cannot buy the cover separately...probably a good idea since a lot of people mow up their cover because of the way the factory tells you to attach the cover...

I have used this kit as well as side discharge only and bagger. In my opinion, the clippings don't blow up as bad with the mulching kit attached.

Answer:
There are no limitations, unless you have a preference for mulching versus side discharge versus bagging. Mulching, in my opinion, is less hassle as long as you mow regularly.

46 in. Mulch Kit for Cub Cadet LTX 1045 Riding Mower is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mulch Kit I had trouble keeping the plastic cover in place, it kept coming off, especially if I hit a twig or a large clump of grass. I finally took the pin off my bagger kit, drilled a hole in the cover, and reattached it to the mower, in order for it to stay on. It still has a tendency to ride up and lets grass out the bottom, but all-in-all it does mulch. Needs to be redesigned to be made out of metal and at a more resonable price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It doesn't work I am very disappointed with this kit. The blades are fine but the shoot cover doesn't stay on and in the time you do have before it falls off it leaks like a sieve. I have added a bolt through the housing to be able to use it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from multcher plug i installed the multcher plug per factory instructions...after using my new mower 4 times the bungy strap broke and the plug went into my deck mutilating it..not a secure way to mount it...and not very durable..now if i want to use my mower as a multcher again i have to purchase a $90 kit (again) including another set of blades because its not sold seperately

Rated 2 out of 5 by from nice blades, plug design lacking I was very excited to get this mulch kit, though I discovered after the fact that the blades were unnecessary as my tractor came with mulching blades installed. Maybe the factory reps read some of the reviewer's comments on this site in that regard. However, I was surprised at how loosely the plug fits. The engineering/design of this plug leaves much to be desired. As others have commented, grass clippings get flung right through the gaps between the plug and the deck. Within a few minutes of mowing my lawn, it will usually fall off. Like another viewer, I screwed it on, but that of course makes switching to the bag attachment more of a chore than it's worth sometimes. Bottom line, don't expect much out of this mulch plug. Cub Cadet's supplier needs to redesign this part, and it would be nice if they would replace mine for free. I know, I know. Pinch me and wake me up, right? I am recommending this only because there's no other option, and when it works, it does a good job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice mulching, but deck cover could attach more securely. The cover is a bit loose when installed per instructions, and allowed a lot of the clippings to escape. I modified the installation a bit, taking the rubber strap UNDER the front deck wheel support and securing on the drain hole on the edge of the deck. This seems to hold the cover against the deck better. The cut is excellent, though I feel like my old Craftsman dual-blade walk behind mulched smaller pieces. The Cub mulches about .5-.75" length pieces.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad buy but worked I was able to use the mulch kit for about 3 months. During this time, the cover kept moving up letting clumps of grass pass through the bottom where the frame and the plastic cover should have been flush. As for the blades, I had no problems with them. The mulch kit itself does work......when it wasn't having cover problems. After several attempts to reposition and tighten the cover...it finally broke at the rubber band which sent the cover inside and coming back out into a nice plastic mound of shreds. Now, I'm learning that the cover/plug isn't sold by itself. Meaning, I am either going to be forced to spend another 89 dollars or......ERRR! Honestly, after reading reviews of JD products working flawlessly, the Cub Cadet Mulch cover must be designed poorly. Mine was installed by a professional dealer and before I used it myself, I inspected it to make sure it was on correctly. It DOES Mulch great when it worked but if you're looking at this for an option, I would highly recommend adding EXTRA support to it....after its first installed so you won't have to go through this same process 3 months later... I'm not about to give up my mower over this issue, but I am looking into alternate means to cover the plug area.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This produce works as long as it stays on. Used my mulcher approx 6 times, it came off and the blades cut it up, can't just get the plug, you have to buy the whole kit. Disappointed in this product.
Date published: 2013-03-14
Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor design of mulch plug I put another strap on the second plug I bought. I took it off the 1st one that got smashed up. It works much better with a strap on each side.
