Product Overview

The Cub Cadet 42 in. 22 HP Kohler V-Twin OHV Zero-Turn Riding Mower features a steering wheel instead of lap bars, so it's easier to learn and use. The 42 in. cutting width helps mow large areas of grass to reduce mowing time and the heavy duty 2-blade cutting deck is rust resistant for long-lasting use. The zero-turning radius offers efficiency and control when mowing and the automatic transmission lets you set your own pace. Even while mowing at different speeds, the dual hydrostatic transmission provides true zero-turn performance all while protecting your lawn and providing unparalleled stability. For added comfort, the simplicity of gas and brake pedals matches the arrangement of a car's control and movement. To go forward, press the gas pedal. And to go in reverse, simply push the reverse pedal that sits right next to the gas. And with Synchro Steer Technology, the steering wheel controls both the front wheels and the independently controlled back wheels for greater maneuverability, tracking and stability on tough terrain and steep hills.

Customer Questions & Answers

does the lawn mower cut when you are in reverse thanks Jim in pa

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, it does, but... Reach down into the metal decking around the reverse pedal and find the screws. Loosen just one to maneuver the trip switch out of the way of the reverse pedal. I know this is a safety device but it is a real PITA since it shuts off the PTO everytime you need to back up a little.

Why does this lawnmower not cut in reverse?

Asked by: Betty
It does mow in reverse. From the position the key is in after mower starts, turn key back one notch then press the yellow button and red light comes on. Now blades won't go out of gear when you back up. However if you get off the mower you have to do it all over. Turn the switch back to just started position and repeat above process.

on an upslope drive with this mower has any one had any problems .I saw and test drove it at the Danville VA store .Which I think is a great idea .But I did notice that all the weight was in the back of the mower and wondered about this .I am a short women mowing 3 acres of land .I have used a troy built for years .I have a cub cadet lap bar mower that I feel I can not control well .It was my husbands and since his heart attack he cannot use .I feel bad since it only has 63 hours on it .

There is a little bit of common sense here. I have been mowing with this mower for 3 years for lots of people. There is nothing but steep slopes and the like here. I have climbed as steep of slopes as I ever climbed with the conventional steering wheel type with the motor in front. Today I was mowing on steep side hills until I chickened out. New development and they mowed with a push mower before, I can't imagine how they stayed up there to push the mower. Front wheels won't slide down the way the did on convention type. If you are nervous about the slope stay off it is the best way. There is an excellent chance, as with any mower, you won't get a second chance if you flip it, so don't be stupid. It is like a billy goat, it would be real easy to get on to steep of slope and end in disaster. There is absolutely no way I would trade this mower for the lap or lever type. I mowed for years with the lap type.

I had a true two column zero turn that I just couldn't avoid tearing up my yard. No patience. But this allows me to make the zero turn and it controls the back wheels so the yard doesn't get torn up. Even when the grass was a little wet. My only draw back is it rides a lot rougher than the previous zero turn. I do like the larger wheels up front and taking the deck off is fairly simple. I converted my mower to a mulcher in a matter of minutes. I was even able to get the belt on without using anything special or someone else's help.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1/2 the time This mower takes 1/2 the time to mow and even has a smaller deck. Zero turn is awesome and the steering wheel allows you to keep your hands free if needed. I would not recommend having it delivered as that was a nightmare. The company that was supposed to deliver it messed up and tried to reschedule. Since I took a day off to receive it I was a little frustrated and had to go pick it up at a warehouse. Home depot let me use a trailer free of charge so they did what they could to assist. I would recommend having it delivered to the store and then pick it up.

They were actually easy to install after I figured them out. The instructions were not very clear about how the bagger mounted in relationship with to hitch and rear of tractor. After mounting hitch ( requires removing heat shields & taking off rear ) and putting it back together. The instructions made it look like I had to do it again to mount rear bagger. I did, only to find out it sat above the hitch. Reassembled, then it was smooth sailing after that. Home depot took 4 days to uncrate the mower. They put steering wheel on crooked. Left steering shaft protective cover for base up near steering wheel. They did not install deck discharge cover, they said they don't do that. I haven't had it long enough to rate it much other than to practice and I love it so far.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Return a week later After seeing so many Cub Cadets in my neighborhood I felt confident with my purchase decision. After uncrating and completing the assembly of the mower I used it twice on my half acre and the mower quit working. I drained the gas, cleaned it up and returned it to the HD for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart patient finds relief Prompt delivery, easy assembly, drives with I let my daughter and granddaughter mow the lawn which is a relief since I had heart surgery last year and it gets mighty hot in the summer in MS.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really enjoyed this zero turn mower I went from your standard run-of-the-mill front engine mower, to this steering wheel controlled zero turn mower and cut my mow time down by 2/3. I have 2 acres lof and that includes several smaller segmented areas that I have to mow. So to say there was a good amount of back and forth mowing or wasted time making big loops to turn the mower around. I went from just about 3 hours to mow, to getting the yard finished in just over an hour with this zero turn mower. That said, I did run into a quality issue with the PTO breaking after 2.2 hours of mowing - as I was finishing moving my lawn for the 2nd time with this mower. The blades disengaged while I was cutting like normal, and I could not get the blades to reengage. I don't feel I could give it 5 stars since the mower broke after the 2nd week I used it, but I still gave this 4 stars, because I believe this is a one-off issue and Home Depot went out of their way to make it right and resolve the problem, and the mower ran and handled great otherwise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's easy to operate, cuts well, and easy to clean. I bought the Cub Cadet, RZT-S, 42in. 22 HP Kohler V-Twin Dual Hydrostatic Zero-Turn Riding Mower with Steering Wheel Control specifically for what I hoped to be the ease of operations for my 16 year old daughter, and I was right. The steering wheel makes it easy to drive, and it cuts what we drive it over. There are two things I'd change if I could: the steering wheel isn't adjustable, and the PTO kicks off when it goes into reverse. The ability to adjust the height and reach of the steering wheel would make it a more comfortable drive. It is a hassle to have to restart the PTO each time we have to back-up, plus not being able to cut in reverse causes extra effort to complete cutting some areas.
