Product Overview

The Cub Cadet 42 in. 22 HP Kohler V-Twin OHV Zero-Turn Riding Mower features a steering wheel instead of lap bars, so it's easier to learn and use. The 42 in. cutting width helps mow large areas of grass to reduce mowing time and the heavy duty 2-blade cutting deck is rust resistant for long-lasting use. The zero-turning radius offers efficiency and control when mowing and the automatic transmission lets you set your own pace. Even while mowing at different speeds, the dual hydrostatic transmission provides true zero-turn performance all while protecting your lawn and providing unparalleled stability. For added comfort, the simplicity of gas and brake pedals matches the arrangement of a car's control and movement. To go forward, press the gas pedal. And to go in reverse, simply push the reverse pedal that sits right next to the gas. And with Synchro Steer Technology, the steering wheel controls both the front wheels and the independently controlled back wheels for greater maneuverability, tracking and stability on tough terrain and steep hills.

Yes, it does, but... Reach down into the metal decking around the reverse pedal and find the screws. Loosen just one to maneuver the trip switch out of the way of the reverse pedal.
I know this is a safety device but it is a real PITA since it shuts off the PTO everytime you need to back up a little.

Not as supplied, but if you loosen the Torx fasteners you can actually move it out of the way just enough that when you engage the reverse pedal it doesn't hit the switch.
I found it very annoying that it would disengage the PTO when I needed to go in reverse.
This mod did the trick.

No, putting it in reverse disengages the deck. You have to put in forward and then reset the blade engage button. A small inconvenience for anotherwise great machine!

No - the mower does not cut when you are in reverse and only due to safety issues, I think this might be even standard for all mowers. For me really isn't a big deal and as someone with little kids, I would rather be safe!

I discovered this same condition with my 42" the first time it was in use. The answer is that a limit switch operated by the reverse direction pedal is actuated thereby disengaging the solenoid controlling the mower blades. Voiding the warranty prevented the rewiring of this switch as every other tractor I have owned allowed this operation. Unless someone can offer a reason why this zero turn model should not cut in reverse, this switch will be rewired after the warranty period.
Hope this helps.

Answer:
It does mow in reverse.
From the position the key is in after mower starts, turn key back one notch then press the yellow button and red light comes on. Now blades won't go out of gear when you back up. However if you get off the mower you have to do it all over. Turn the switch back to just started position and repeat above process.

It will if you switch the key into the yellow region. The red light will come on indicating you're mowing in reverse in case there are children around. If you don't move the switch from green area to yellow, it will not mow in reverse due to a special lockout.

Answer:
It has a switch connected to the reverse pedal that disengages the PTO clutch which stops the blade from rotating. Most riding mowers have this as a safety feature. Maybe the idea is to keep the risk of injury down because accidents are more likely to occur while moving in reverse.

I have been mowing with this mower for 3 years for lots of people. There is nothing but steep slopes and the like here.
I have climbed as steep of slopes as I ever climbed with the conventional steering wheel type with the motor in front. Today I was mowing on steep side hills until I chickened out. New development and they mowed with a push mower before, I can't imagine how they stayed up there to push the mower.
Front wheels won't slide down the way the did on convention type. If you are nervous about the slope stay off it is the best way. There is an excellent chance, as with any mower, you won't get a second chance if you flip it, so don't be stupid. It is like a billy goat, it would be real easy to get on to steep of slope and end in disaster.
There is absolutely no way I would trade this mower for the lap or lever type. I mowed for years with the lap type.

This mower is the answer to yours prayers. It hold the hills excellent whether you are mowing up, down, or sideways. It has excellent traction backing up hills. I prefer to do my hills sideways with this mower. It handles well where as your lap bar mower front caster wheels would want to roll down the hill.

Hello Sissy, and thank you for the question. Our units are all rated to be safe for up to a 15 degree grade in the topography of the land. To exceed this angle increases the chances of risk and injury to the unit and to the operator. For more safety operation instructions, please consult your owners guide.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use Have owned for several years easy to maintain cuts your mowing time to half of what you spend on a regular mower. Easy to operate and very comfortable. July 3, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Cub Cadet Zero Turn Mower When we got the lawnmower it was in a crate that took an act of congress to get the mower out of, would have been nice if Home Depot would have supplied someone to help get it uncrated. Was a horrible experience. By the time we got the mower out, had 2 pin holes in tires from tacks that were on the crate. Horrible experience! After we got tires fixed the mower ran well and cut well and is very enjoyable and easy to handle. But after we cut and put it up for 3 days it would not crank. Now we need to figure out what is wrong with it! July 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exceptional Mower Riding Mower arrived a day earlier than expected which turned out to be a great thing as we needed to be out of town the date of the original scheduled delivery. We have only used it once but we're able to mow our large lawn area plus about a quarter of an acre of our four acre property in far less time than mowing half of the lawn area! Our acreage is rolling hills which the mower handled with extreme ease. When they say Zero Turn that is exactly what it means, it turns on a dime! The mower also has seven height options which can be changed just by stopping the mower and pulling a lever. The lever adjustment is a little difficult to move from one height to another but this could just be an issue since I have arthritis in my hands plus I'm 65 years old. The bottom line is, I highly recommend this mower to anyone who needs a powerful machine. June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome! This mower has improved my quality of life. It would take me about an hour to cut the lawn with my self-propelled mower as well as having to make 2 passes with each cut. Not to mention, I would be exhausted afterwards - especially during the hot sticky summers. Now I have been able to cut the grass with this riding mower in a fraction of the time. It is fast and the zero-turn feature is great! Love it! June 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good product for the price had a problem with delivery need to check all adjustments for tightness steering is a little tight other then that its a good machine lots of leg room, iam 6"4 and over 300lbs its quit compared to my craftsman its easy to keep clean June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great mower for 1-2 acres I'm really glad I went with the zero-turn Cub Cadet. Mowing my 1.2 acre yard went from being a dreaded chore to a pleasure, and you can get a high degree of precision thanks to the zero turn feature. It's very easy to drive and turn with almost no learning curve, and you can cut major time off your mowing schedule. It can be a little tricky to get in and out the seat for longer-legged people, but the seat is comfortable once you're there. I appreciate the LCD display that tells me how many hours until oil and air filter need changed. May 17, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by I really really want to like it So, where to begin? First off I ordered the mower and it was going to be delivered "in a few days". I was planning on going out of town and I wanted to make sure that I was going to be at home. I called Home Depot and then they transferred me to the delivering company. After a 5 minute conversation, it became clear that the delivering company was in no way going to deliver this mower. It was over 500 pounds and they were incapable of delivering it. My immediate response was to call Home Depot and inquire about it. I asked him didn't they think that the company would know if it was over 500 pounds they would not be able to deliver it? After quite a bit of calling and recalling (with very little feedback from either the delivering company or Home Depot) it was arranged to be delivered by a third party company. They finally delivered the mower and brought it to the house. Just as a sidenote the delivery company truck broke down and they were in the driveway fixing it for about two hours. After receiving the mower and going over it thoroughly, everything looked in order. I filled it with a oil and gas and started mowing. Everything was going great until about 40 minutes in one of the front wheels turned sideways and the mower started lurching left and right. I looked at it and realized that the teeth that meshed the front wheel and the drive system together had slipped and the wheel was now about 4 to 5 teeth out of alignment. I later realized that it had also broken the tie rod for the steering. I contemplated fixing it and decided that I wouldn't try to realign the teeth due to possibly messing up any warranty. You could tell that something was wrong from the factory because the teeth weren't level and meshing together well. The first factory repair center that I called told me that it would be three weeks before they could even look at it. I ended up calling another one that was about 40 miles away and they told me that they could get on it fairly quickly. So I put it on the trailer and headed down the road. About a week later they call me back and told me that part had been welded on upside down and that was causing the problem with the teeth not lining up properly. They replaced the broken tie rod and I went and picked it up. I got home and mowed with it for about 20 minutes and POW! The wheels were out of alignment again. I looked underneath and I had broken another tie rod. I called the service center back and they stated that they were very disappointed that is broken again and actually came and picked it up for me. They said that it may have a recall in the future. It is still in the shop and I have yet to be able to finish mowing my yard after having purchased it 6 weeks ago. I love how it turns, rides and cuts. It seems to be a decent mower but jesh, I wish it wasn't so prone to breaking. If it breaks again (once I get it back) I'm going to ask for my money back! G.P. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awsome Lawn mower I love this lawn mower I can't say enough about it. My first time ever driving or owing one and i must say how easy it was to learn how to use. The build quality is very good took hills like nothing very fast and powerful. I have cut my mowing time in half for sure maybe more. I now look forward to cutting my grass in the summer it will be a breeze. May 23, 2016
