PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Model # RZT-S 42

Internet # 204694626

The Cub Cadet 42 in. 22 HP Kohler V-Twin OHV Zero-Turn Riding Mower features a steering wheel instead of lap bars, so it’s easier to learn and use. The 42 in. cutting width helps mow large areas of grass to reduce mowing time and the heavy duty 2-blade cutting deck is rust resistant for long-lasting use. The zero-turning radius offers efficiency and control when mowing and the automatic transmission lets you set your own pace. Even while mowing at different speeds, the dual hydrostatic transmission provides true zero-turn performance all while protecting your lawn and providing unparalleled stability. For added comfort, the simplicity of gas and brake pedals matches the arrangement of a car’s control and movement. To go forward, press the gas pedal. And to go in reverse, simply push the reverse pedal that sits right next to the gas. And with Synchro Steer Technology, the steering wheel controls both the front wheels and the independently controlled back wheels for greater maneuverability, tracking and stability on tough terrain and steep hills.

Yes, it does, but... Reach down into the metal decking around the reverse pedal and find the screws. Loosen just one to maneuver the trip switch out of the way of the reverse pedal.
I know this is a safety device but it is a real PITA since it shuts off the PTO everytime you need to back up a little.

Not as supplied, but if you loosen the Torx fasteners you can actually move it out of the way just enough that when you engage the reverse pedal it doesn't hit the switch.
I found it very annoying that it would disengage the PTO when I needed to go in reverse.
This mod did the trick.

No - the mower does not cut when you are in reverse and only due to safety issues, I think this might be even standard for all mowers. For me really isn't a big deal and as someone with little kids, I would rather be safe!

I discovered this same condition with my 42" the first time it was in use. The answer is that a limit switch operated by the reverse direction pedal is actuated thereby disengaging the solenoid controlling the mower blades. Voiding the warranty prevented the rewiring of this switch as every other tractor I have owned allowed this operation. Unless someone can offer a reason why this zero turn model should not cut in reverse, this switch will be rewired after the warranty period.
Hope this helps.

It will if you switch the key into the yellow region. The red light will come on indicating you're mowing in reverse in case there are children around. If you don't move the switch from green area to yellow, it will not mow in reverse due to a special lockout.

Answer:
It has a switch connected to the reverse pedal that disengages the PTO clutch which stops the blade from rotating. Most riding mowers have this as a safety feature. Maybe the idea is to keep the risk of injury down because accidents are more likely to occur while moving in reverse.

It works in a similar way to the bars. The mower has two hydrostats and the steering wheel connects to both of them, as you turn one direction one hydrostat is running one direction and the other is running the opposite direction (one wheel is either turning faster or slower than the other, and in a zero-turn condition, it's actually running in opposite directions, just like having 2 "bars".

One of the things I like about the steering wheel is that you only need one hand to run the mower. Whereas with the two bars, both hands are being used 100% of the time. Leaves one hand open for a beverage, cigarette, what-have-you.
I had a problem with mine because the pin that holds the linkage on to the hydrostat fell off, creating a locked condition. The mower would not move at all. So if that happens, be sure both linkages are connected. I replaced the cheap cotter pins with steel trailer hitch pins and have not had the problem again. Read Less

Hello Olliepop,
Cub Cadet is once again living up to its reputation of providing industry-leading innovations by introducing the all-new RZT S (residential zero-turn with steering wheel) bringing the choice between lap bar and steering wheel control to a new segment of the zero-turn market. Utilizing technology first developed for Cub's top-of-the-line TANKTM S commercial zero-turn riders, the RZT S delivers the speed and time savings of a zero-turn mower with the stability of four-wheel steering and the ease of steering wheel control. With a price tag starting at $2,699, the RZT S is a smart, affordable choice for homeowners with up to three acres of lawn to mow.
For those seeking the benefits of a zero turn mower, the RZT S provides a new option available only from Cub Cadet. Unlike traditional lap-bar zero-turn riders, Cub Cadet's four-wheel steering (patented as Synchro Steer Technology®) zero-turn models, like the RZT S, use foot pedals and a steering wheel to control the speed and direction of the rear wheels. When a driver makes a true zero-turn on the RZT S, Cub Cadet's patented Synchro Steer Technology synchronizes all four wheels based on direction and speed to improve traction, stability and user control - all while protecting your lawn. Comparatively, on a traditional lap bar-controlled zero-turn rider, the front wheels are floating caster wheels, and are not controlled by the user.
"We worked very hard to offer homeowners the new RZT S," said Jeff Salamon, director of marketing, Cub Cadet. "At $2,699, the RZT S brings technology and innovation to a level not available from any other brand and until now never before available from Cub Cadet outside of the professional or higher-end residential markets. Zero-turn saves you time and four-wheel steering gives you stability, confidence and turf protection on any terrain. The steering wheel gives you unmatched ease of use. One test drive proves the incredible performance of the RZT S, including how enjoyable it will be to mow your lawn."
The all-new RZT S offers users these important benefits:
•Precision: An advanced cutting deck designed with optimum airflow and blade overlap for the perfect Cub Cadet Signature Cut every time
•Stability: The only zero-turn with four-wheel steering and steering wheel control in its class - offering exceptional traction and stability on hills, so you can tackle tough terrain without damaging your yard.
•Reliability: Heavy-duty professional grade engine and 12-gauge steel frame for enduring performance, plus a dual hydrostatic transmission, cutting deck and chassis all protected under a 3-year limited warranty.
•Comfort: Features like an adjustable steering column, cruise control, high-back adjustable seat and SmartJet Deck Wash add to the exceptional experience of owning and operating a Cub Cadet RZT S.
Thank you for your question.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 133 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great mower for 1-2 acres I'm really glad I went with the zero-turn Cub Cadet. Mowing my 1.2 acre yard went from being a dreaded chore to a pleasure, and you can get a high degree of precision thanks to the zero turn feature. It's very easy to drive and turn with almost no learning curve, and you can cut major time off your mowing schedule. It can be a little tricky to get in and out the seat for longer-legged people, but the seat is comfortable once you're there. I appreciate the LCD display that tells me how many hours until oil and air filter need changed. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awsome Lawn mower I love this lawn mower I can't say enough about it. My first time ever driving or owing one and i must say how easy it was to learn how to use. The build quality is very good took hills like nothing very fast and powerful. I have cut my mowing time in half for sure maybe more. I now look forward to cutting my grass in the summer it will be a breeze. May 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Zero Turn Riding Mover wit Steering Wheel Great Lawn Mover. Love it. I highly recommend it and easy to control. May 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Really enjoyed this zero turn mower I went from your standard run-of-the-mill front engine mower, to this steering wheel controlled zero turn mower and cut my mow time down by 2/3. I have 2 acres lof and that includes several smaller segmented areas that I have to mow. So to say there was a good amount of back and forth mowing or wasted time making big loops to turn the mower around. I went from just about 3 hours to mow, to getting the yard finished in just over an hour with this zero turn mower. That said, I did run into a quality issue with the PTO breaking after 2.2 hours of mowing - as I was finishing moving my lawn for the 2nd time with this mower. The blades disengaged while I was cutting like normal, and I could not get the blades to reengage. I don't feel I could give it 5 stars since the mower broke after the 2nd week I used it, but I still gave this 4 stars, because I believe this is a one-off issue and Home Depot went out of their way to make it right and resolve the problem, and the mower ran and handled great otherwise. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by WOW - Really? Ever buy a tool hoping to make your life easier, only to find it doesn't help or work like it was advertised? In today's world, do you ever feel 100% satisfied? This mower is everything I dreamed it would be and more. It is the most satisfying purchase I have made in YEARS. THE CUT, THE POWER, THE SPEED - ALL ARE WITHOUT DOUBT AMAZING! I love my new Cub, and I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they will like it - Cause you too will LOVE IT! Free shipping came in 3 days, delivered straight to my driveway and palat jacked to my garage. You need a buddy to get it un-crated, can't do it alone, but after that you can be up and mowing in 15 minutes. I don't ever feel like I get 100% for my money, this time I definitely did. April 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by AWESOME MOWER This mower is top of the line and is a beast and well worth the money!!!! Only issue with this mower is you feel every bump May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Time Saver I have 1/2 acre I thought the mower might be to big for my yard. Due to the zero turn even with a fence the mower was very easy to use and the obstacles were no problem. Great cut, however the optional mulch plate needs to be modified with 5 bag ties or grass will be ejected resulting in clumping. This fix takes 10 minutes and fixes the issue 100%. It's baffling that Cub Cadet doesn't include the bag ties because this issue has been mentioned in the reviews for years. I knew of the issue prior so was prepared. This is an online item only so it will be delivered. The first step in the assembly is remove the mower from the pallet and crate. Sounds Simple. It is packed very well. I needed saws, chisels and hammers to remove it. Give yourself some time it's easier said than done. Again it's packed very well. This is by far the best mower I have ever owned. April 7, 2016
