Customer Questions & Answers

Is fix-it-all waterproof?

Asked by: fixerupper
No. It will absorb water in a "wet" situation but does not break down. Is somewhat like a rock hard sponge. Probably not what you are looking for.

this can be on kitchen wall is not fire hazard ?
Asked by: cevadad
Probably, yes. However, it is pretty runny and if you make it thick enough NOT to run, it sets up quickly and is very difficult to sand smoothly. This product works best when you use it on a horizontal surface. If you want to patch a wall, I would use something that is actually designed for that purpose like spackle or drywall mud..

The most important thing to know about this product is that it sets up VERY quickly (about 5 minutes). Mix only as much as you can use in 5 minutes and do NOT let it slake as you would grout or cement. It is very good for leveling horizontal surfaces. Mix thinly so that it pours like syrup. If you mix it too thickly, you cannot level it AND you will get bubbles. As mentioned by another reviewer, it is very difficult (almost impossible) to sand. It's a very good product for certain applications. I have used it many times. However, suggest that YOU practice with a small amount first to understand how to work with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not For Exterior Use Good for some things. Hard as a rock but hard to sand. Cleans up easily with water as long as you do it before it hardens. Seems very durable but don't use it outside. I thought as long as I put primer and good paint on it, it would be O.K. But, in some areas the paint is bubbling up. If there is any way moisture can get in there (back, sides, etc.), it will.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent multpurpose patching agent but it dries FAST! Basically, this appears to be a very similar product to Fastset Lite aka rapid setting joint compound. It seems to have some plaster of pairs influences. Examples of where I used it: Dry wall - ceiling to build some low spots in a repair. I put it on at 1/2 thick or so in some spots. 1.5 years later - no cracking and I didn't use any joint compound tape between the sheets of drywall around the large repair ~ 6x5 feet. I have used it to smooth out knots and gouges on 2x6 stairs in my home office that gets walked over on a daily basis. Only one spot chipped which was where the stair was nailed to the stinger. Not bad - daily walking on the steps and landing for almost 2 years! I applied latex primer over the patches. Outside - I bought the large 20lb? sack of fix-it-all because it was damaged and leaking I asked for a half off discount and my wish was granted. The problem was I had so much of it I didn't know how I would ever use it up. The solution: mix large batches and apply it to the outside of my door which was made out of OSB. I applied it between 1/8 to ~ 1/4" thick to smooth out the door. I let it dry for a few days because of the thickness then I applied latex primer and paint. It is a door and has even been slammed HARD once. NO CRACKS! No problems even from a light spay of water from the garden hose. This exceeded my expectations. I like that the water can be adjusted to make it thick to fill holes or thin to smooth out a rough surface. ONE COMPLAINT: I wish the set time was slower like 20 minutes instead of 10. Ten minutes is too fast and limits the batch size. You need about 2 minutes or more to add water, mix and get to the place where you are going to apply the compound. That leaves a working time of 7 minutes or less. Once it starts to kick off and set adding water will not help and extra water does not increase the working time. Other than that this is great stuff that even holds up on a wood floor.
