what is the area one 50 lb. bag will cover, approximately?

Asked by: Anonymous
The coverage of the mortar depends on the size of the notch trowel you are using. The size of the notch trowel depends on the size of the tile you are setting. For example, if you were setting a 6 x 6 tile you would use a 1/4" x 1/4" square notch trowel and you would get approximately 80 square feet per bag. The larger the tile, the larger the notch trowel and the less coverage you will get. For specific coverage you can call our technical department at 800 272-8786 option 2 and they can help you figure it out based on your installation. Thank You

Coverage using 1/2" trowel

We are laying 18 x 18 porcelain tile in the guest bathroom. The bathroom is about 5 x 10 (rounded up) feet so approximately 50 sq ft. We will use a 1/2" trowel. Should I purchase the 25 or 50 lb bag?
Asked by: Nick
A 50lb bag will cover approximately 45-50 sf using 1/2"x1/2" trowel.

If I use this mortar, can I skip the red guard? Which way is less expensive?

Can flex bond be used to lay ceramic tiles I've linoleum?

Asked by: al
Plywood flooring including those under resilient flooring must be structurally sound and meet all ANSI and deflection requirements. Sheet vinyl must be well bonded and stripped of old finish. Roughen the surface by sanding or abrading, then rinse and allow to dry. For further assistance please contact our installation division at 800.272.8786 option 2

is this product recomended for use on wood subfloor to hardie backer?

Asked by: Anonymous
Late answer, but I'm about to do just this with 1/4" Hardi Backer board. As this products exceeds ANSI A118.1 and A118.4 (specified by Hardi Backer for 1/4" on floors), I would say: "yes". I will update post after using.

Can I use this product to fix cracks in ceramic tile floor?

Asked by: Mason
If you have cracked tiles then your substrate has too much deflection. In other words, your subfloor is moving too much. It is possible that this product will help, but I would check the subfloor and see if it can be strengthened.

Will this mortar compensate for minor vertical movement?

I have a crack in my concrete pad that causes some minor vertical movement. When I used tile cement, the tiles cracked. When I used thin set, the tiles popped up. Will this material allow vertical shifting without either of these two results? The 8x8 tiles are nearly 30 years old and are irreplaceable.
Asked by: Gordon
FlexBond Crack Prevention Mortar will not protect against vertical movement. For further assistance please contact our installation division at 800.272.8786 option 2

FlexBond 25 lb. Gray Crack Prevention Mortar is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mixes well. Easy to apply and to use. Excellent bonding strength Flexbond is my go-to mortar for bonding ceramic and porcelain tile. I have used this product to adhere tile to cement as well as to wood subfloors, with extremely good results. The product mixes easily with water and applies smoothly to all floor surfaces using a notched trowel. Only mix what product you can use in an hour to avoid waste. Once cured, Flexbond creates a permanent bond between the tile and the floor. Its important to clean Flexbond off tile surfaces before it cures because after it cures, it's impossible to remove. I value my time, effort and labor, and would not trust any other mortar product. Highly recommended.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Directions Correct ? Mixed according to the directions on the bag, 2.5 qts water to contents of bag. Result was mortar that was barely workable. Ended up discarding more than half of the mixture, as it started to dry/set, while we struggled with the little we used to lay Wonder Board. Haven't called the company as yet, but would add at least 1/2 - 1 more qt of water from the beginning.

I used it to install the Schluter Ditra uncoupling membrane (as a moisture barrier), and it worked great. Yes, it might be a little more expensive than regular thin-set, but worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent bonding ability I used this to put travertine on top of previous ceramic tile in a large shower enclosure. I called the co. and they said to rough of the ceramic tile with a course circular sander/grinder. It has been over ten years not a single cracked or lifted tile. Incredible bonding, excellent for vertical surfaces.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bast thin set I have used If you are going to be considered a professional and expect to get paid to do something then you should use the best product available for the job. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion. This thin-set has never failed me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT PRODUCT JUST SO YOU KNOW YOUR CHOICE OF THINSET IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN LAYING TILE, DONT JUST BUY ANY THINSET THATS OUT IN THE MARKET, SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND BUY THIS FLEXBOND CRACK PREVENTION PRODUCT AND YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG. I HAVE USED IT ON MANY PROJECTS WITH HEAVY FOOT TRAFFIC AND WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES. WHEN I USED JUST ANY THINSET THE GROUT ON THE TILE EVENTUALLY WOULD START TO CRACK ON MY FLOOR, NOW YOUR THINKING I MIGHT NOT KNOW HOW TO INSTALL TILE PROPERLY IF MY GROUT IS CRACKING BUT MY SUBFLOOR HAS 24" ON CENTER JOISTS AND 3/4 PLY, NOW THATS ENOUGH TO MAKE THE FLOOR FLEX WHEN PUTTING YOUR FULL WEIGHT ON IT EVEN WITH 1/2" CEMENT BOARD. SINCE USING THIS PRODUCT I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE GROUT LINES CRACKING OR ANYTHING. I AM NOT A CONTRACTOR BUT I HAVE TILED OVER 800SQ FT AND I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE WHO'S TILING. IT DOES WHAT IS SAYS ON THE BAG.
