If this one's not good for "mesh underlayment" , which one is?
FYI i didn't mean to imply there's some kind of separate underlayment; these are 12 x12 of 2 " marble tiles on a mesh backing. will be going onto Duroc (over exterior ply)

It was full of hardened clumps and I ended up throwing out over half the bag at my expense. It is nearly impossible to check for moisture clumping unless there are obvious signs on the exterior of the bag.

Custom Building Products makes a wide range of mortars, and The Home Depot sells much of that range. FlexBond is Custom's most heavily modified general-purpose thinset mortar. It is designed to be used for every tiling application that thinset mortar is used for: ceramic, porcelain, glass, stone, and brick tile. FlexBond comes in both white and gray colors. The gray here is the general-purpose mortar that is used in most applications. The white is used for installing transparent, translucent, or thin light-colored tile, wherever the gray mortar may end up making tiles look darker. FlexBond is NOT a medium-bed mortar and NOT designed to hold up heavy, large tiles and keep them from settling and moving over their drying period. FlexBond should not be used for anything larger than 12x12-inch tile, a common size, if keeping the tile from settling is a major concern. FlexBond dries harder and is initially stickier to succcessfully adhere to a larger variety of substrates during installation. This is what you use for your critical installs, where you need to give your tile the best possible chance of staying where you put it, or where you're clearly trying to stretch the limitations of the tiling method you're using. Despite it's higher price, this mortar is often worth a DIYer's consideration because it's much more bulletproof than something much less expensive, like VersaBond. Fewer things can go wrong, and the quality of the materials can often help someone with limited tiling skills get the job done with a higher rate of success. Be sure to clean your tools carefully when you're done with them. This stuff gets very hard and you might never be able to use the tools again if you leave them caked with mortar for a few hours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to work with...even for a rookie. I ended up using way more than I expected to, presumably because I laid it out thicker than I needed to. My only gripe is when I bought all my materials for my job back in July, there was no mention on the bags that this product was not appropriate for tiles with side > 15". In fact, the product description and picture online still make no mention of that limitation. When I went to HD to purchase additional bags, the bags say it is for 15" or less. I didn't want to change products, so I bought more bags of the Flex Bond. I will be very disappointed if the product fails

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointing, was it a bad bag? I got this thin set based on reviews for a tub surround. Mixing with recommended water ratio it was very thick and hard to work with and dried too fast. I put the tiles on and when I pulled one off barely any of the back had thin set on it. I pressed hard on the tile and used wood and a rubber mallet to even tiles. Onse I saw that there was no tile coverage I just scrapped all the tiles off and started over.

I was laying long, imitation wood-like plank tiles (up to 36" in length) onto virgin cement board. The product was easy to apply and held the tiles in place. It has been several months and I do not see any tile movement or cracks in the tiles. Flexbond makes a mortar with even more flex for longer tiles like my application, but that type of mortar is not sold in PA stores.

Flexbond (both white and grey) is a great and preferred type of thinset for laying tile in the shower - I have used it in multiple applications. It covers wells, sticks well, but dries very fast, so don't mix too much, and do apply some extra on each tile if it started drying on the wall faster than you wished.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from FlexBond Fortified Thin-Set I used this thin-set for an external slate tile project. It is a bit difficult to mix but has worked well in the actual tile setting. Too early to tell if expansion and contraction will be an issue that results in cracks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent, except... A question mark exists when you combine price and workability for those working solo. It sets FAST forcing you to work FAST. It also does not store in airtight containers once mixed.
