Customer Questions & Answers

Does this grout need to be sealed?

Asked by: ChrisDiMarioo
I would seal this grout or buy a different brand. I had my bathroom remodeled and the contractor used this grout to tile my shower. Had mildew stains on the floor within two months. Contractor cleaned and reapplied the grout, swore up and down it didn't need to be sealed. Well as you can see from the picture not six months later the mildew is worse.

This grout left a terrible residue and discolored my tiles! HOW do I get this off!

Asked by: leanna
Hi Leanna - I had a bit of the same issue when I used it. I found that Original Windex WITH AMMONIA-D, (accept no substitutes) helped clean it up. Let it sit for a little bit, then: Expect to also use some "elbow grease" - I think I used a Scotchbrite pad - SAFE FOR NON-STICK to help, but try a good terry cloth rag first - the sooner the better - GOOD LUCK!!! will this product also stick to wood?

I am installing tile next to wood, will the epoxy grout also stick to the adjoining wood floor at the marriage line?
Asked by: Suz52
Yes. I installed a granite tile countertop and used red oak as trim around counter edge. Before grouting, I stained the wood and sealed it and then masked it off with tape. I've had it installed about a month, now, and all looks well.

Fusion Pro #156 Fawn 1 Gal. Single Component Grout is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 371.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from OK, I see why people either LOVE it or HATE it! OK, I see why most people either love it or hate it! It does make a beautiful seam when finished, but it's not for the average DIY'er. This is a most unusual product, unlike any I've ever worked with. I'm no pro, but I know you cannot apply it like standard cementitious grout because you have nowhere near as much time to work it before it starts to dry. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that this stuff starts setting up as soon as you pass your float across it! The very fine grit and film that is left behind will dry in like 1-2 minutes AND STICKS to the surface of the tile. (It MIGHT not be as rapid if working in high humidity, but I was in 50% or less) If you float too long/go too far without wiping it off, you will have a fight to get it off. I was laying 6x24 ceramic tile on tub surround walls and could only grout about 36"(1 long edge + 2 shorts) before I had to stop and wipe off. I used the sponge from HD that has the fabric on one side and recommend that one highly because you WILL have to scrub to loosen the grit at times when wiping down and the sponge side alone is not enough! (THAT gives you an idea how firm it sticks!) Well that felt like it was taking FOREVER, so I decided to try applying it with a homemade (Ziploc Qt/Freezer) grout bag. (I had noticed that when the stuff is not spread out thin it dries slower) That worked pretty well with my 1/8" lines that were not too deep. I filled about 36" at a time, with a bead that overfilled about 1/8" above the tile surface. I then came back with a damp 3" putty knife and packed it down flat, 3" at a time, from the side, to ensure fill. Then I scraped along the length to remove most of any excess, which I used on any low spots or tacked on the end where I had stopped the bead. Of course I STILL had to wipe across the seams to remove the residual, but it was a lot less work, mess and waste than the standard float method as none had dried on the tile face... I bought this because of the allure of not having to seal the grout. But compared to the difficulty I had in applying this stuff, sealing standard grout doesn't seem so bad. I have another one for the floor that I'm gonna return. But after reading this, some may decide they would not have a problem with it. I've never tried epoxy grout, but I can't imagine it being easier. Hope this helps.

After one year exactly, mold is now forming in the grout on my shower floor. I spent a small fortune completely installing a new shower and requested only the "best" grout product that would deter mold. I was assured, by Home Depot, this product would work. This shower is used only twice a week and wiped down completely after each use and door left open for full circulation to dry out. I am very upset and angry. NOTHING is removing the mold!!!! WOULD NOT recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Follow the directions My first grout job consisting of approximately 250sq of 1/4" lines on 1x2' tile. It turned out great. I received a compliment from my girlfriends dad who is a professional installer. Reading the negative reviews below is a bit frustrating. One way or another it seems a majority are simply not following the directions listed on the bucket(i.e. keep surface slightly wet, small areas at a time, clean methodically with sponge then microfiber etc) I don't usually write reviews but I do not think the product is being used correctly. ..or maybe I am a day 1 grout master. Either way i am looking forward to using this product in the bathrooms next.

Our contractor tiled our shower floor with it last March and by May we had mildew forming. He said it didn't need to be sealed but I beg to differ! No amount of cleaning works. Now it's a total mess. We have an open shower with just a small three foot glass partition so it's not humid in there. Plus we had two vents installed. Chances are we will have to replace our tile/grout. Do NOT use this product in a wet area!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product I wish I had read reviews last November when I bought this stuff. We remodeled our master bath and used this grout in the shower and on the floor. I noticed that the grout in the shower was starting to come out last month. It has crumbled and now I am having to dig out all of the grout and use a different product. Save yourself the headache of having to replace this junk and use something else, otherwise you'll be redoing your hard work in 9 months. I hope that Home Depot removes this product from shelves because it isn't up to the standards that they generally have.

I don't know about the ones having issues with showers, probably not the best choice and go with epoxy or mix a polymer in with cement grout for showers. But all the other negative posts about how difficult it is. Please you never used true epoxy grout have you. Just keep doing small areas and you won't have any trouble, I'm grouting 18" tiles and I will do a pattern of about 6 wipe those down and just keep moving. Just dont take any breaks after you put the grout down and before wiping with a sponge. Just use a grout sponge with the cloth on one side and use it first. Actually its very simple because there is no mixing and if you ever used epoxy grout well once you mix you are done 5 minutes later and throw away the rest of what you mixed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Check cure time! Tub says 3 days, but website says 7 days. Please check the cure time on this grout!! The tub says three days, but Custom's website says 7 days. I called technical support and confirmed that the cure time is indeed 7 days. Clearly Custom Buildiing Products has a problem on their hands. How can a product be expected to perform in the manner which is expected with conflicting cure times? Here is the cure time from the website. Curing Once grouting of walls is completed, remove the towels and dry off the tile and grout joints. The floor assembly must be dry for 24 hours before grouting. After grouting, allow the entire tile assembly to cure for seven (7) days before running water in the shower.

When it came time to grout I read through all the reviews and almost didn't order this product. We decided to go with it and follow the directions precisely. We watched the video's and followed the directions exactly as written. The finished product looks beautiful ! I am happy we decided to give it a try. It is very important that you watch the videos and not deviate from the directions. We worked as a team, he did the grout and I did the clean up immediately after. it is critical to clean the water frequently ( we used clean water each time it got foggy which seemed to be every other clean up. I can't stress enough the importance of following the directions and immediate clean up. We opted to use two different colors Oyster Gray - floor and shower tile Light Smoke- Mosaic tile
