Customer Questions & Answers

If you seal it in an air tight container, can you reuse it if you can't complete the job in one day?

Asked by: Phil61
No. Tile mortar must be used within a short time. Speed set mortars have an even shorter open time. Thin set mortar will still set up when there is no air.

I"ve had an external balcony made with Gypsam it was coated with Emer Proof waterproofing membrane. The tiler then used MegLite white as the adhesive, then layed and grouted (with grey) the ceramic tiles. Now when it rains, where the water sits we have a sticky white substance that comes through the grout and trickles over the edge of the balcony. It washes off with tap water but reappears as soon as it rains again. It now looks like the grout is also breaking down as a grey substance is also appearing. The job is only 3 months old but happened from the first rains we had and is getting rapidly worse. I'm wondering if there is a step in the process that someone has missed and whether the products under the tiles have reacted against each other and are consequently breaking down? Thanks

Can this be used for tuckpointing exterior brick

Asked by: Gary
Wrong product. This is a mortar for adhering tile. It is not the kind of mortar used for exterior brick.

I liked how light and easy this was to spread, but I spent a lot of time removing large pebbles from my project after I spread the mortar, some as large as 1/2 an inch. At first I thought some mortar just hardened up, but after I scratched a piece up with a screwdriver, I realized it was actually large pebbles. I guess I'm going to have to find a store that carries Flexbond LFT because I'll never buy this stuff again.

Easy to mix, hardens even when wet, sticks like nothing I've ever used before. Used to adhere glass tiles to swimming pool. Even before grouting, a pressure washer didn't pull off even one tile! Wish it wasn't so expensive, and Home Depot raised the price 30% last week!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works very well, but expensive It's pretty expensive. I used it for our 7'x4' shower where we tiled all the way to the ceiling with large format glass tiles. So, i spent hundreds of dollars on thinset alone. That said, I needed the lighter weight and flex this thinset gives. I recommend you mix it just a smidge on the thin side to give you more working time or mix it in smaller batches. It starts to harden a bit faster than other thinsets I've used. When you mix it just a bit lighter than peanut butter, it trowels out nicely and the back butter on large format tiles is smooth as well.

This is a lightweight, but strong mortar that I used it to tile my 25 sq ft bathroom floor (1st time). Initially I went with the Thinset, after taking the Home Depot Installing tile workshop, but I wasted about 3/4 of bag of thinset trying to figure out how much to use. There were too many lumps. Though the instructions read that you can mix by hand, FYI - You will benefit from using a power tool and mixer attachment to thoroughly mix the product with water. (I'm still trying to figure out out to get the hardened thinset out of the orange bucket.) I was concerned that I would waste a large quantity if I used the entire bag. So, i read another reviewer's response on how to determine the right quantity of the product if I didn't need it. (Think of peanut butter consistency. So, I added water and product until it reached the smooth peanut butter consistency and gauged how much to use for the job. I completed tiling and grouting and I still have approximately half of the product in the bag left to use for another bathroom. I could have used a little less, but for a first timer, I am very pleased with the MegaLite 30 lb. bag. Now on to completing the rest of the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Thin Set for Challenging Environments I used this thin set for what is certainly one of the most challenging environments for tile work: outside on a wood framed deck in Colorado. If it works for this, it'll work for just about anything. Last year I built my first large outdoor, waterproof, tiled deck with 18"x18" porcelain field tile, and this thin set has now survived multiple snow storms, followed by bright sun and the associated dozens of freeze/thaw cycles over the past 9 months. It's holding up very well to date with no sign of any issues. I am now in the process of building two more similar but smaller tiled decks and using this thin set again. The decks are constructed from engineered framing materials, covered by plywood, backer board and a waterproof decoupling membrane (made by the Noble company in my case). The surface does, as you would expect, expand and contract somewhat with temperature and humidity swings. I picked MegaLite thin set for its flexibility, and it is also the stickiest stuff I have ever worked with. When I first started using it for the larger format tile, I placed one tile using a 1/2"x1/2" square notched trowel on the substrate and back-buttering the grid on the back of the tile. I then pulled the tile back up to check for 95-100% coverage, which is critical for tile work outdoors, and it was all I could do to pull up that tile using two floor chisels and going very, very slowly so as not to break the tile. The stuff definitely grabs. I went through 24 bags for the first deck, setting just under 1,000 sq ft of tile. Using a light weight thin set is a little different than other thin sets... the consistency is very different and it skins over more quickly. This latter feature is something you need to factor into your tile setting approach because you definitely want to have no skinning when you set the tile. So you just need to have your tile pre-cut, trowel out for small groupings of tile at a time, work quickly and re-stir often (as with any thin set, don't add more water to thin it... toss it when it gets too thick). About 30 minutes after setting a tile, it's pretty much there for life. Cleanup is also more difficult than with a typical thin set because the stuff adheres more to buckets, trowels, your hands and anything else it touches; but that's expected and is a good thing as it's an indicator of how well it sticks. Time will tell how well MegaLite holds up through seasonal cycles, but I have no reason to believe it won't. I also like that you can build up the thickness of this stuff to as much as 3/4" when a thicker application is needed. I now also use this product when I have to set larger tile on a shower ceiling as I have no worries about tile coming loose either during or after installation. It's overkill and a little more tedious for less challenging tile work, especially given the cost, but when you have a tough job it's definitely a thin set to consider.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works good, but dries WAY too fast. This is a great value for glass, porcelain and just about any other material you are installing. HOWEVER, this stuff skins up in under 5 minutes. I don't understand why all of these "light" thin sets dry so quickly. If you are doing a backsplash or wall, and you have cuts to make, you will be lucky if it's not skinned over on the wall by the time you get back. I am sure there are many applications for this thinset that would be great, but this is my experience. It sticks great, it is very light, and good quality however.
