install tile on basement floor?

Can this product be used to install the large tile directly to the basement floor? My home is about 70 years old, and the basement floor is fairly level, and I don't believe there are any cracks. Would this product work?

What thin-set should be used for overhead (ceiling) in a shower, will be using 4" x 4" tiles on a mesh backing?

Asked by: Steve
The type of mortar would depend on the mesh backing. If it's just a regular mesh tile you could use FlexBond, if the mesh is adhered with a resin you would need to use an epoxy mortar. For further information, please contact our technical service department at 800 272-8786 option 2.

Can I use this as a grout between stone for a fireplace?

I have installed natural stone around my newly built fireplace and I am not sure of what kind of grout to use. Can I use this and add a color for my color of choice?
Asked by: Drewsky
Why would you want to? I wouldn't recommend it. It's softer that grout and won't hold up.

Can this product be used over cement board (like wonderboard) to fill a vertical patch on a plaster wall for tile?

Old tiles did not remove clean. Some areas need a skim surface (1/8" or less. Other areas needed to be cut out and patched with backer board. Old wall is uniformly thicker at inside corners. I can shim the backer board a bit at the studs, but may need to skim 1/8" to 1/4" in a few spots for smooth, even surface. Planning on 4" x 12" porcelain tiles after wall is repaired.

will this product work over hardwood floor?

Asked by: Rick
Absolutely NOT! Sounds like you need to call a professional! Tile cannot be installed over hardwood flooring, ever. Wood expands and contracts continuously and would crack your grout and tile job apart. You'll need to remove the hardwood flooring, make sure your subfloor is sound. If you have cement/slab foundation as a base, you can tile on top of it with propper preparation. Otherwise you will need to install floor rated plywood, then cement board, then tile on top of that.

Good for stone wall tile?

Would this be good for installing 6' x 24' slate wall tile on hardiboard?
Asked by: Anonymous
I have used it for stone and it worked very well when applying stone to cement board or wire mesh. Just make sure you have an even application on the stone.

Can I use this product to install travertine over an existing tile?

Asked by: jj
Huh. Theoretically, yes, it's possible to turn tile into a minimally suitable substrate for another tile layer. But really, in most residential applications, it's not a wise idea. This could get very ugly and expensive in the long run. But that's all easy to say from afar, since I don't know your particular situation! Whatever you do, make sure you don't end up having a layer of mortar or a series of built-up layers that add up to more than 3/4" inch of mortar in some places. The mortar will start to fail after that thickness, and you'll have weak spots in your floor that will eventually crack. This is wonderful mortar, and I've seen it do remarkable things in thinset and medium-bed applications, but pushing it past 3/4" is too risky for my blood. Good luck!

I'm a DIYer and didn't know if this mortar was particularly any better than the less expensive ones. After using a bag of this product, I then used a bag of VersaBond-LFT which sells for $17.97. In all honesty, the VersaBond didn't seem to stick that well to the back of the 12" X 24" porcelain I was putting down. Using a 1/2" X 1/2" trowel, I'd apply the thinset to the floor, apply tile, pull the till up and was a bit surprised how the thinset didn't transfer to the tile. It actually created more work. So after using a half bag of VersaBond, I tossed it and went back and got more of this product. $8 a bag premium adds up but the time savings and doing a good job is worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product. When installing 18x18 travertine, I mix 2parts of this with 1 part of standard versabond thinset. That way, I get the smoothness with the support I need. If I were installing flagstone, I would use it at 100% by itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked very well I used to install 2x4" travetine back splash with spots of 8 1x1 accent tiles. Worked well. Used 1/8" wedge spacers along bottom and between tile mats to keep from sliding down wall and maintain 1/16" tile spacing. Note this setting compound is for large tiles and any size stone tiles. Since had only about 20sf made 1/4 bag and did bottom mats 12" high. Let set for at least an hour and made second batch and layed therest. This was only my second tile project. Recommed watching utube videos on laying tile if novice like me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product My experience is similar to Builder's. If you're not working quickly, the mortar will begin to skin over, at which point newly laid tile won't stick. If you find this happening, simply scrape up the skinned-over mortar, put it back in the mortar bucket, and mix it around some more. I did all my tile cuts before mixing any mortar. This significantly reduced the amount of time for actual tile installation. I was able to complete a 27 square foot bathroom space in about 3 hours with large format tiles. This being my first tile job ever, I'm happy with the results.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok I used this product to install large, 24" plank, porcelain tiles. I needed a medium bed mortar due to the length of the tiles. The directions were easy to follow and well written. The appearance and feel felt similar to thinset. I learned the hard way that they mortar dries very quickly once you trowel it. I have had to go back and remove 30+ tiles and re-do them because about 1/3 of the plank tiles would not adhere. The reason is I would work too slowly--I would trowel down several feet, lay some tiles, maybe measure and cut a tile and come back to lay that last one. You can't do that. By the time you cut a tile, the troweled mud was too dry. You should scrape it away and start over and/or butter the tile. So you must work very quickly and buttering the tiles is recommended to achieve 80% coverage. It's not a bad product, it's just that you have minimal working time to lay them. Additionally, I really wanted a gray mortar, but the home depot clerk told me the large format is only sold in white. Now I look online and see that it is available in gray. I didn't need a natural stone product, just a large format. So I've been having to wash and scrub each tile on my hands and knees to remove the excess white mortar that squishes up the grout joints. I should have done my research online first and not listened to the clerk. As for the repaired tiles, we layed them quickly and buttered the backs and they seem to be holding up well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tile Mortar I bought this as recommended by Home Depot for my product. The first batch mixed very thick and was hard to work with. I was working with a light colored tile and could not see easily any mortar on the top of the tiles until it dried and hardened. Clean up was difficult. I found that the cheaper grey mortar that was not recommended was listed as suitable for the tiles I used. The grey mixed well and applied well. Clean up against the light colored tiles were easier. So far, the grey is bonded just as good as the white.

We and everyone else that has seen it loves our "rock" wall, including the installer and other people working on our kitchen project. Custom Building Products of Natural Stone, Large Tile 50 lb. White Premium Mortar, Expanded Metal Sheeting and Hardy cement board from Home Depot. Love the rock wall! Installed over hardy board on the wall around the window. Surrounding the fireplace previously were large moss rocks from floor to ceiling. Once the rocks were removed, expanded metal sheeting was put in place with cement smoothed over the metal. The rocks were varied in color and blended in perfectly. We did not need to lay the rocks out to check the colors. The rocks cut easily with a wet saw and did not need any mortar, we did however, fill in just a few small lines but kept the stacked look. Would recommend this beautiful wall to anyone.
